American Express is rolling out ‘compensation’ deals for Platinum cardholders.

For holders of the personal The Platinum Card, it is fairly simple – American Express is giving you £100.

If you have American Express Business Platinum, this article explains what you are getting instead.

£100 free for American Express Platinum cardholders

Do I get £100 in cash?

No.  Well, sort of.

In order to receive your free £100, you need to spend £100 by 27th August at any combination of:

  • Marks & Spencer
  • Waitrose & Partners
  • Deliveroo
  • Harvey Nichols
  • Apple (online only)

100% of your spending at these shops is returned in the form of statement credit, up to £100 per card.  For clarity, the £100 cap is NOT per shop.  It is cumulative across all five shops above.

What are the restrictions?

There are some, but they are not hugely onerous:

  • M&S exclusions: Bank and Energy services, Bureau de change, Opticians and Petrol stations
  • Waitrose & Partners exclusions: Cellar, Florist, Garden, Pet, Cookery school, foreign currency, Gift Section
  • Harvey Nichols exclusions: International delivery, gift cards, vouchers and dining within restaurant
  • Apple exclusions: Apple iTunes, Apps and Apple Music, Apple Search Ads, Apple Finance and Gift Cards

Here is a key thing to remember.  Waitrose gift vouchers can be used at John Lewis department stores, either online or instore.  If you can get to a Waitrose store but do not want to spend £100 on shopping, you can buy a gift card which should trigger the cashback.  You can then spend this at John Lewis at your convenience.

Do I need to register for this offer?

Yes.

You MUST register your card for this offer.

To register, go to the ‘Offers’ section of your online statement page for your American Express Platinum card.  Scroll down until you see this promotion and click ‘Save To Card’.  You’re good to go!

Virtually all Platinum charge cardholders have this offer.  A small minority do not – it is not clear why.

Can I apply for The Platinum Card now and get this offer?

It isn’t clear.  It runs until 27th August so you would have plenty of time.

However, it depends on American Express adding the deal to the ‘Offers’ tab of your online statement page and we cannot be certain that this will happen for new applicants.  I’m sure we will find out soon enough.

Our full review of The Platinum Card is here if you want to find out more about the card.  You can apply here.

Conclusion

This is clearly a ‘no brainer’ offer for holders of The Platinum Card.  Ensure that you register your card now.  Remember that you have until 27th August to do the relevant spending.

Found it and activated on main plat card, suppl plat and suppl green. amazing!

  • Simon says:

I am trying to purchase a e-gift card from waitrose onlineS but it keeps defaulting to john lewis
I presume the offer will not be applicable right?

    • Rob says:

      Correct.

But realistically at some point between now and August you will walk past a Waitrose somewhere ….

      • Sandgrounder says:

Spoken like somebody from the South East! I am lucky my closest is 6 miles away- coverage is generally very sparse in the frozen North.

      • Chas says:

Depends if I then have half an spare to queue to get in….!

    • bsuije says:

Careful!!! Orders for John Lewis / Waitrose gift cards are not charged by JL / Wiatrose. I bought some last week and they came through as “VOUCHEREXPRESS RIPON” on the statement.

  • Tim says:

My £575 renewal was yesterday so this is a nice sweetener. Have a supplementary plat on the account as well so £200 to cover Waitrose shopping bills.

Also got 20k MR points by phoning Amex, so overall a very nice gesture by Amex and goes a long way to keeping me a customer

    • Tim says:

I should also give huge props to Rob and team for actually highlighting all of these offers. You guys are great and part of my morning reading routine for good reason!

      Keep up the great work!

  • Craig says:

Has anyone else got that ‘too good to be true’ feeling? For me this would easily cover the annual fee as we have it across 6 cards.

    • Rob says:

Yes. However … since the Business Platinum offer is NOT on supplementary cards, I assume that Amex knows what it is doing by making it available on personal supp cards.

We’ll find out soon enough. If you’re nervous, don’t rush out and spend £600 tomorrow (given it runs until August) until it is clear it works separately on each card.

I need to get my Mum’s supp Gold reissued! I cut it up when she hit 70 as she only had it for the travel insurance 🙂

  • Voltron says:

Anyone recently joined plat charge getting these offers? Or is it only long standing members?

    • A says:

New Amex Plat for wife about 2 months ago, followed by referral to me last month (waiting period up so decided to get back in). Both have the offer.

  • Steve says:

My wife’s Platinum card (upgrade from Green) account was active last week, card arrived and was activated yesterday. Sadly this offer doesn’t appear on her card.

Whilst she has the 20k MR £4,000 spend target over 6 months, we also tried to get 20k MR compensation as per offer a couple of weeks ago but was told by phone agent that the retention offer was not applicable to new cardholders – which I think is fair.

  • onlysuites says:

I would definitely take out a Platinum card if they offer it on new applications. Lets’ see.

  • Matthew says:

DP: The offer isn’t showing on any of my Platinum or supplementary cards. I have my main Platinum card, a supplementary Green AC under my name, and a supplementary Platinum under my sister. Each card has it’s own login/online account and the offer doesn’t show on any of them.

    • B says:

Likewise, platinum holder since 2017 and no offer on main or sup cards.
