American Express is rolling out ‘compensation’ deals for Platinum cardholders.

For holders of the personal The Platinum Card, it is fairly simple – American Express is giving you £100.

If you have American Express Business Platinum, this article explains what you are getting instead.

£100 free for American Express Platinum cardholders

Do I get £100 in cash?

No.  Well, sort of.

In order to receive your free £100, you need to spend £100 by 27th August at any combination of:

  • Marks & Spencer
  • Waitrose & Partners
  • Deliveroo
  • Harvey Nichols
  • Apple (online only)

100% of your spending at these shops is returned in the form of statement credit, up to £100 per card.  For clarity, the £100 cap is NOT per shop.  It is cumulative across all five shops above.

What are the restrictions?

There are some, but they are not hugely onerous:

  • M&S exclusions: Bank and Energy services, Bureau de change, Opticians and Petrol stations
  • Waitrose & Partners exclusions: Cellar, Florist, Garden, Pet, Cookery school, foreign currency, Gift Section
  • Harvey Nichols exclusions: International delivery, gift cards, vouchers and dining within restaurant
  • Apple exclusions: Apple iTunes, Apps and Apple Music, Apple Search Ads, Apple Finance and Gift Cards

Here is a key thing to remember.  Waitrose gift vouchers can be used at John Lewis department stores, either online or instore.  If you can get to a Waitrose store but do not want to spend £100 on shopping, you can buy a gift card which should trigger the cashback.  You can then spend this at John Lewis at your convenience.

Do I need to register for this offer?

Yes.

You MUST register your card for this offer.

To register, go to the ‘Offers’ section of your online statement page for your American Express Platinum card.  Scroll down until you see this promotion and click ‘Save To Card’.  You’re good to go!

Virtually all Platinum charge cardholders have this offer.  A small minority do not – it is not clear why.

Can I apply for The Platinum Card now and get this offer?

It isn’t clear.  It runs until 27th August so you would have plenty of time.

However, it depends on American Express adding the deal to the ‘Offers’ tab of your online statement page and we cannot be certain that this will happen for new applicants.  I’m sure we will find out soon enough.

Our full review of The Platinum Card is here if you want to find out more about the card.  You can apply here.

Conclusion

This is clearly a ‘no brainer’ offer for holders of The Platinum Card.  Ensure that you register your card now.  Remember that you have until 27th August to do the relevant spending.

  • Mike says:

No such offer for my plat card 🙁

  • Simon says:

Same for me, no offer, card holder for 20yrs … was it capped / limited number of card holders Rob? Or maybe targeted?

    • Chas says:

Sadly the same for me. I did call and get my 15k retention bonus yesterday, but I doubt that this should then have precluded me from this offer.

    • Josh says:

Think they have withdrawn the offer temporarily to stop it appearing on supplementary cards.

    • Rob says:

      No cap.

    • Georg says:

I don’t have the offer either. Have had a platinum card since 2008. Quite disappointed

  • Cam says:

Does anyone know if something similar will appear in the International Currency Cards?

  • Rob says:

Amex has just been in touch to tell me that this is NOT valid on supplementary cards.

Now, there is often a gap between reality and American Express policy, especially as all other Amex offers on supp cards in the past would trigger separately. However, I am just passing on the official line.

If you have it showing on a supplementary card I would register it immediately in case it disappears later (not that registering it is a guaranteed way of saving it).

    • Andrew says:

This has now been pulled for new registrations on supp cards it seems. Just depends if the ones which were saved on supps are still going to be valid in reality or if they offers saved will be revoked other than on the main card holder. Hard to do that considering non-HFP readers might have saved the offer in good faith this morning, then gone spending as per the terms of the offer to then find Amex have changed their mind on offering it to that card holder. I would suspect that if it has been saved to a supp it will work.

      • Harry says:

HFP readers or not, they were all added in good faith. HFP didn’t advertise it as an error. I know there are bigger problems in the world right now but it would be unfair practice to remove it from those who added it through no fault of their own and may or may not have already spent it.

I’m happy if I get it on the main one, and will be pleasantly surprised if they allow them to remain on the supplementary Gold and Plat but will manage my expectations.

        • Daniel says:

Still showing as saved on the supplementary cards I managed to save it to earlier.

Very hard to see Amex not honouring those already saved. Terms are pretty clear it applies “per card”, not “per card account” – which is the terminology used in the insurance terms from memory.

          • Andrew says:

I agree, early worms will be lucky here as I can’t see how they could revoke an offer already saved.

        • Andrew says:

Well yes indeed – my only point about being a HfP reader is that otherwise people wouldn’t know that the offer has been pulled from supps so you could be merrily spending and expecting a rebate without any comms from Amex to say otherwise.

  • S says:

    I’m not seeing it.

  • Kathryn says:

Doesn’t seem to be ALL Platinum cardholders – it didn’t appear in my offers list. I had an online chat with their representative – it targeted and not for everyone

    • S says:

Online chat is useless and often misleading; take it with a pinch of salt.

  • Callum says:

we’ve not been targeted and we both spend approximately £200 on main and supplementary card in M&S each month.

  • Alex says:

No sign of it on mine either. Whole load of Wine merchant offers though, maybe they’ve targeted me well 😀
