American Express is rolling out ‘compensation’ deals for Platinum cardholders.

For holders of the personal The Platinum Card, it is fairly simple – American Express is giving you £100.

If you have American Express Business Platinum, this article explains what you are getting instead.

Do I get £100 in cash?

No.  Well, sort of.

£100 free for American Express Platinum cardholders

In order to receive your free £100, you need to spend £100 by 27th August at any combination of:

  • Marks & Spencer
  • Waitrose & Partners
  • Deliveroo
  • Harvey Nichols
  • Apple (online only)

100% of your spending at these shops is returned in the form of statement credit, up to £100 per card.  For clarity, the £100 cap is NOT per shop.  It is cumulative across all five shops above.

What are the restrictions?

There are some, but they are not hugely onerous:

  • M&S exclusions: Bank and Energy services, Bureau de change, Opticians and Petrol stations
  • Waitrose & Partners exclusions: Cellar, Florist, Garden, Pet, Cookery school, foreign currency, Gift Section
  • Harvey Nichols exclusions: International delivery, gift cards, vouchers and dining within restaurant
  • Apple exclusions: Apple iTunes, Apps and Apple Music, Apple Search Ads, Apple Finance and Gift Cards

Here is a key thing to remember.  Waitrose gift vouchers can be used at John Lewis department stores, either online or instore.  If you can get to a Waitrose store but do not want to spend £100 on shopping, you can buy a gift card which should trigger the cashback.  You can then spend this at John Lewis at your convenience.

Do I need to register for this offer?

Yes.

You MUST register your card for this offer.

To register, go to the ‘Offers’ section of your online statement page for your American Express Platinum card.  Scroll down until you see this promotion and click ‘Save To Card’.  You’re good to go!

Virtually all Platinum charge cardholders have this offer.  A small minority do not – it is not clear why.

Can I apply for The Platinum Card now and get this offer?

It isn’t clear.  It runs until 27th August so you would have plenty of time.

However, it depends on American Express adding the deal to the ‘Offers’ tab of your online statement page and we cannot be certain that this will happen for new applicants.  I’m sure we will find out soon enough.

Our full review of The Platinum Card is here if you want to find out more about the card.  You can apply here.

Conclusion

This is clearly a ‘no brainer’ offer for holders of The Platinum Card.  Ensure that you register your card now.  Remember that you have until 27th August to do the relevant spending.

I’d still like to know why my cards show NO offers (via app and website), including this one…I live in the US, so it’s not usually a big deal, but for this one, but I fancy some airpods and they are cheap to have forwarded to me, so it is time to call.
They also removed my grandfathered MR express bonus points (1.5/£1) a couple of months ago and neglected to tell me…

  • Nick says:

Not showing on my Plat card offers page!! Offended!

    • Rob says:

      Offer is now pulled.

      • Riccatti says:

That’s a blunder with the offer pulled.

I also had cases in April, May when no credit was generated for the registered offer. I did not bother with CS (again). Closed the cards and saved on fees.

To add ‘an insult’, American Express seemingly tightened their lending criteria: if you carry a promotional balance on other cards, no amount of regular income can persuade them — even if 2x months worth of income repay that promotional balance in full and above. This is ridiculous.

        • Hertz says:

          what is promotional balance?

          • Sandgrounder says:

Probably a lump sum transferred over from another card at a promotional interest rate. Otherwise known as ‘credit card debt’, it’s never going to look as good as paying off in full at the end of the month.

          • Riccatti says:

A balance transfer at 0.00% rate is ‘a promotional balance’.

It seems lenders stopped being persuaded by the promotional balance flag on the credit file (that it is a debt at low to zero rate).

      • Chris Heyes says:

Rob@ Saved to supl So hopefull it will be honoured Can’t see them “not” to be honest.
Would need to e-mail to every Supl cardholder (not main cardholder) can’t see them doing that
i also don’t think they could pull it for them that reg it without telling them
        “We shall see”

        • Josh says:

I doubt it’ll be honoured. Amex just has to remove the saved offer from supplementary cards. Easily done.

  • BJ says:

What a saga! With amex IT I think it is very likely those that saved to one or more supps this morning will be getting X x£100, good luck.

    • Roberto says:

      I would think so.
Took screen grabs earlier and would argue the toss if I did not get both credits on two cards.

      • Josh says:

They could easily just wipe the saved offer from your card though.

        • Andrew says:

Still argue for it, with the screenshots. You can’t reasonably be expected to check the offer is still there in your saved list once you come to use it just in case Amex have changed their mind about it. And unless you’re a HFP reader how would you know that the offer you saved to your card this morning was a mistake?

          • Jonathan says:

Quite easy for them to just e-mail everyone clarifying terms. Genuine error is acceptable for a pricing mistake in a shop & I think this is pretty similar.

          • meta says:

No they can’t after you saved the offer. General T&C for the offers say the following:

            H. Changes

American Express reserves the right to vary any eligibility criteria or Offer Terms prior to you saving the offer to your Card.

So if you saved the offer they can’t vary or change the terms!

          • David says:

They could just roll the supp cards over with New Card number, say card been used at high risk store, that removes the offer,

            Or

            G. Fraud/Gaming/Glitches

American Express reserves the right to suspend or cancel the offer if any fraud or gaming by users, technical failure or any other factors outside our control impairs the integrity or proper functioning of the offer which may result in any loss or damage to American Express. We will try to give you reasonable notice of any such incident and take reasonable steps to ensure you are not unfairly impacted if the incident is due to something we have done or failed to do.

An awarded credit may be reversed if qualifying transaction is refunded or cancelled. Any misuse, as reasonably determined by us, relating to your redemption of Amex Offers may
result in an awarded credit being reversed, and ineligibility from future Amex Offers and other promotions. This reversal may take place up to a maximum of 180 days after the offer campaign end date. Please note that if an awarded credit is reversed after you have paid your bill you may be returned to a negative balance.

American Express reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual suspected of fraud, gaming the offer or any breach of the Offer Terms.

  • Boi says:

Gutted. Cancelled plat yesterday. What a bad timing on my part!

  • BuyEMExternalBonds says:

I just redeemed 300k in points for statement credit – how long should it take to reflect on online account?

What are peoples views in terms of valuation here? 1000 mr points = £9

    • Harry T says:

Doesn’t matter what our valuation is if you’ve already redeemed them

      • BuyEMExternalBonds says:

This is true, been deliberately the last weeks if its worth liquidating nearly all my points I have saved up given this once in a lifetime (???) opportunity to get the monetary value amex is offering.

But would be interesting to hear other inputs

        • BJ says:

Well, since you ask, I would never have done it. Reason being, for example, it could once converted to avios and used in conjunction with 2x 241 amex vouchers + £1600ish have got 2x returns to Asia for 2 pax in CW over Xmas/NY. For comparison, I would have been looking at paying £1500pp in Y on BA for same dates 2018/19. I could also do a lot of damage with those MR points were I even to convert them to Hilton provided I used them wisely at the right hotel in the right city at the right time. Despite that, I still think you got a great deal because it was twice what you would normally get using the points in this way and I doubt you would have done it unless it was useful for you at this time. I strongly believe a good deal is any that works for anybody at the time they do it, and what works today might be very different from what worked last year or will next year. It all just depends on individual circumstances at any given time. There are some who akwats want to do something approaching the maximum monetary value they can squeeze out of points or miles, personally I havd always felt this approach is just nonsense and runs a high risk of dissatisfaction and regret.

          • Genghis says:

“ I could also do a lot of damage with those MR points were I even to convert them to Hilton”

Here’s an idea. 1MR = 2 HH. Instead, take the statement credit at 0.9p / MR and use the cash to buy Hilton points at 0.4p ea, yielding a “profit” of 0.1p / MR 🙂

          • BJ says:

For clarity, I meant ‘maximum money-equivalent value of points or miles redemptions’ and not monetary value in the sense of your statement credit.

          • BJ says:

@Genghis, can we buy HH points at 0.4p with current FX? I haven’t checked recently as I was too busy with the curvaceous one and Barclaycard down the government bank 🙂 I have never actually transferred MR points to HH and would not now do so without one of those transfer bonuses we saw recently, which would tip the maths.

          • BJ says:

Thanks, not spending cash at the moment either, burning season 🙂 Feel quite pleased, managed to refund everything as cash, except Air Asia which I was quite happy to take as a credit. Only loss has been 4x£35 to BA but that’s not unusual for me at the best of times.

          • BuyEMExternalBonds says:

Fair enough, I already have mid six figures in avios points which I have not used which I factored in, agree about probably getting more value with avios + 2f1

        • Crafty says:

I’m redeeming all my MR points as cash against statement now. 0.9p is an excellent rate. My previous preferred option, Bonvoy, is less attractive now that the viability and enjoyability of future travel are in question. Moreover, we have a second child coming, making all hotel redemptions trickier

    • Genghis says:

Whilst you could argue that you should have got a cash back card from the start if that is what you want – albeit you got all the other benefits of the plat, but at a much higher fee – given the sunk nature of the points as they are, I’d be happy with 0.9p / MR. I have a stack of MRs on Gold and would loved to have got 0.9p / MR instead of adding to my piles of points.

      • Rob says:

Arguably you could take out a Plat for a couple of weeks, cash them in and close the Plat (after topping up your hotel statuses and putting the card in a drawer to get you 2 years of Eurostar lounge access …..)

        • Genghis says:

Good plan. I’d lose my 10k anniversary bonus, however, so will prob wait until that’s in the bag and reassess.

        • Genghis says:

I’ve got Eurostar access till 2023 on previous cards 🙂

  • Jonathan says:

Is there a way to register for offer on a Plat ICC?

  • Chris says:

How are people receiving retention bonuses?
