British Airways to give a six month extension on upcoming BA Amex 241 companion vouchers

British Airways has done a big favour to British Airways American Express cardholders whose membership years end in July, August or September.

As part of the current coronavirus compensation deal, all British Airways American Express 241 companion vouchers issued by 30th June 2020 were to be issued with an additional six months validity.

This has now been extended to 30th September.

This means that all newly issued 241 vouchers, triggered by 30th September 2020, will be valid for 2.5 years (or 1.5 years if generated on the free BA Amex card).

BA Premium Plus American Express card BAPP

Official confirmation should arrive from British Airways during the day today.

I have written before about how this extension creates a situation where it may be advisable to trigger your next 2-4-1 voucher early.

Here are the new dates you need to bear in mind for a BA Premium Plus cardholder:

A 2-4-1 voucher issued on 20th September 2020 will expire on 20th March 2023 (30 months)

A 2-4-1 voucher issued on 20th October 2020 will expire on 20th October 2022 (24 months)

Anyone who triggers their next voucher in October, November or December 2020 or January / February 2021 will be worse off than someone who triggers their next voucher in late September 2020.

There could be real benefits in triggering your voucher early to get the extra six months.  If you have kids and your card year ends in November, for example, triggering your voucher in September 2020 would cover you for Christmas 2022 and February half term 2023.  If you don’t trigger your voucher until October or November 2020 it won’t – it will expire in October 2022 or November 2022 respectively.

What does this mean for me?

If your next British Airways Premium Plus American Express card year ends between October and February, you may want to think about pushing forward spending so that you trigger the voucher before 30th September.

This will maximise the life of the voucher by giving you 30 months to use it.

(Remember that the expiry date is the date by which you must take your outbound flight and not the deadline to book.)

Any speculation as to additional 2-4-1 extensions? Mine has been pushed to end of May 2021. I don’t want it to go to waste, but equally I want to use it when it’s safe and appropriate to do so, and I’m not sure sometime in the next 11 months is that!

    • Anna says:

If the future travel voucher still stands, making a booking and cancelling it for a voucher should extend it until April 2022. I have done this (not deliberately, I had to cancel a pre-Xmas mini break), so hopefully have extended the life of my 2 4 1 from Feb 21 to April 22.

Perfectly timed update Rob, I have just £29 left to trigger my voucher!
My year ends in mid August, but I was aiming to trigger anytime before the end of June to get the extra 6 months. Will wait until my regular end date in August now to give me until Feb 2023!
    Thanks

Thank goodness. My EDF account is already 2k in credit I really didn’t want 1500 of amazon/john lewis vouchers,

  • Connor says:

Was literally just about to buy something to trigger the voucher, glad I didn’t now!

  • Pat says:

Just got an email from amex saying “ Collect 2 bonus Avios for every £1 spent at Apple Online Store UK, Deliveroo, M&S, Tesco and Waitrose & Partners until 12 September 2020. ”

    • BlueThroughCrimp says:

      Same!
Was going to get rid of the BAPP and concentrating on the Gold, but this will make me think about it! My year ends almost when this offer ends.

    • PJJ says:

Is this BAPP only or does it include the BA Free Card ?

  • vinz says:

Slightly OT, but just got an email from Amex.
They’re offering an extra 2 Avios per £1 spent at Apple, Waitrose, Tesco, M&S and Deliveroo until 12th September… So £1 spent at Waitrose gets cardholders 3.5 Avios… not bad at all. I wish they offered this on each pound spent everywhere…

  • Anna says:

This is great news! I had been dithering between forcing my voucher to trigger by the end of this month and letting it trigger “naturally” which would be towards the end of July but this solves the problem.

  • JohnT says:

Few, even though I am close to triggering the voucher early but was “worried” my BA refund would hit before end of month (not sure much chance but would have been very annoying if in last few days of the month). Has BA appointed some new customer friendly PR Guru suddenly?
