Earn double Avios or Virgin points at Esso petrol stations with a Tesco Express in August

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Esso is offering double Tesco Clubcard points on fuel purchases during August.  As Tesco Clubcard points can be transferred directly into Avios or Virgin Flying Club points, this means double miles!

I thought you couldn’t earn Clubcard points at Esso any longer?

On 1st June 2019, Esso dropped its relationship with Tesco Clubcard and signed up with Nectar.  Most people thought that this was the end of earning Tesco Clubcard points, and therefore Avios or Virgin points, at Esso petrol stations.

This isn’t true.  You can still earn Avios at Esso.  Tesco and Esso have not done a good job of promoting this, however, which is why you might not know about it.

Tesco Clubcard

Can you still earn Clubcard points at Esso?

YES – but only if you shop at an Esso station which include a Tesco Express store.  The Esso website confirms this.

For clarity, this applies to purchases of fuel as well as shop purchases.

How do I find a participating Esso garage?

There are almost 200 participating garages across the UK.  The easiest way to find them is via the Esso Fuel Finder website here.

Esso Fuel Finder has an option for ‘Clubcard Points on Fuel and Shop’.  Select this box and it will only highlight participating garages near you.

How many Avios do I earn with double points?

At Esso garages with a Tesco Express store, these are the standard earning rates:

1 Clubcard point (2.4 Avios) for every £3 spent on fuel, up to 100 litres per visit

1 Clubcard point (2.4 Avios) for every £1 spent in the Tesco Express shop

1 Clubcard point (2.4 Avios) for every £1 spent on car washes

During August, the points you earn on fuel are doubled.  You receive:

2 Clubcard points (4.8 Avios) for every £3 spent on fuel, up to 100 litres per visit

For clarity, the only points you can collect at Esso garages which do not have a Tesco Express store are Nectar points.  There is no double points offer with Nectar.

Is this a better deal than earning Clubcard points at Tesco garages?

Here’s the interesting thing.

Usually, it is more lucrative to collect Avios via Tesco Clubcard when you buy fuel at Tesco petrol stations.

At Tesco filling stations, you earn 1 Clubcard point (2.4 Avios) for every £2 spent.  The Esso rate is 1 Clubcard point (2.4 Avios) for every £3 spent, so Tesco is 50% more lucrative.

However, during August, Esso garages are more lucrative than Tesco garages:

Tesco garages give you 1 Clubcard point (2.4 Avios) per £2 spent, so 1.2 Avios per £1

Esso garages give you 2 Clubcard points (4.8 Avios) per £3 spent, so 1.6 Avios per £1

You can find out more about this offer on the Esso website here.

Although the terms and conditions only exclude banking from the double points promo at Tesco I haven’t earns double points on any fuel purchases, the terms do exclude opticians, fuel and banking on the Marks and Spencer’s, but I wasn’t aware of opticians or fuel being sold at Marks and Spencer’s, I wonder if these two are round the wrong way!
Has anybody else earns double points on fuel at Tesco?

    • Vasco says:

I thought this was the case for a bit, but then I worked out what was happening. Amex just aggregates your Tesco spend for a day when they put out the bonus points. So if you’ve bought petrol and did a shop the same day, you’ll only see one bonus entry, although it will correspond to the sum of your spend.

    • AJA says:

I think the M&S fuel restriction is mentioned because there are M&S stores at many BP petrol stations.

I filled up at Tesco, paid at pump, two days ago. Will keep an eye out for whether I get the bonus Avios.

    • AJA says:

Follow up re earning bonus Avios on Tesco petrol purchases. I just checked my BAPP Amex account and was credited 110 Avios being the bonus Avios on the £55 I paid at pump at Tesco on 29 July. Also received the £100 refund of RFS fees for the cancellation of my Tenerife trip.

  • Genghis says:

“ At Tesco filling stations, you earn 1 Clubcard point (2.4 Avios) for every £2 spent”
Or 1 cc / £1 if you use a Tesco bank card cc no as cc. Easy to set up in Pay+

    • Reney says:

Hi Genghis, I have read similar advice but only just recently got a Tesco card. So I have my Tesco credit card set up in Pay +, is the best thing to do scan the code from the Pay+ app when asked for clubcard number, but pay with my amex? Thanks

      • TGLoyalty says:

You need to register the pay+ app with the clubcard number that’s shown on the CC

Then you can set up whatever card you want to pay with.

  • Navara says:

Don’t forget fuel is much more expensive from Esso

  • Smithy435 says:

When you pay for fuel at a Tesco Express with an Esso, does it go through as an Esso payment, Tesco Petrol Station or just Tesco as I don’t see how Amex would know if I was buying some shopping or paying for fuel otherwise?

  • maccymac says:

No I haven’t earned any BAPP bonus avios on Tesco fuel even though T&Cs only exclude banking… has anyone earned for fuel or successfully chased this up?

    • Carl says:

I have, although it took much longer to show than my regular Tesco purchases.

      • maccymac says:

Do you pay at the pump or go in and pay at the kiosk? I don’t know if that makes a difference but I’ve been paying at the pump.

        • Colin says:

I paid at the pump. The transaction appeared as “Tesco Filling St” on my statement.

    • Colin says:

I didn’t get any bonus points either when I used a Tesco filling station

    • Sandra says:

Have earned on all my fuel purchases too

  • Brian P says:

still better for Tesco Premium credit card holders to fill at tesco, right?

  • Vasco says:

The Esso stations with a Tesco Express will code as a Tesco on Amex, so you’ll get the extra points there too.

  • james says:

ESSO at Tesco Express about 4-5p a litre more expensive so pointless

    • Rob says:

That assumes a) you pay for your own petrol and b) you have a choice of both near you in the first place.

      • Fenny says:

Also assumes there’s one within a reasonable distance. Although the nearest petrol station to me in Esso (10p more than I’m prepared to pay), the nearest Esso with a Tesco is the other side of Northampton, so at least 15 miles away and I try to avoid Northampton on principle. Unless I’m allowed to visit Ma in Sheffield again any time soon, I think I’ll pass on this offer.

    • Brian W says:

Given the cost of fuel varies drastically throughout the UK between brands, that’s a pretty fruitless comment I’m afraid.
