UPDATED: Got a free BA Amex? Earn 1,000 bonus Avios over the next seven weeks

If you have a British Airways American Express card, you can earn up to 1,000 bonus Avios over the next few weeks from a new promotion launched today.

You will earn one bonus Avios for every £2 you spend between now and 25th October, up to 1,000 bonus Avios.

Earn 1,000 bonus Avios over the next 7 weeks

This applies to spend on both the free British Airways American Express and the ‘annual fee’ British Airways Premium Plus American Express.

(EDIT: Or perhaps not. It seems that this offer is only for free BA Amex cardholders. The information supplied to me by Amex yesterday was vague. Apologies for any confusion.)

Do I need to register?

Yes.

Head over to the American Express website here, log in and look under the ‘Offers’ tab on your British Airways American Express card.

The offer should be showing there. You need to click ‘Save to Card’.

For clarity, I am told that this offer is available to ALL British Airways American Express cardholders. (EDIT: free card only, it seems)

Can supplementary cardholders register too?

No, it seems not.

Earn 1,000 bonus Avios over the next 7 weeks

Is there any other small print?

It looks like the bonus is awarded on a per transaction basis. This means that a £1.99 purchase earns no bonus and a £3.99 purchase only earns 1 bonus Avios.

Online, instore and foreign spend all counts, as does spending made via mobile payment wallets.

Apart from that, it seems very straightforward and well worth putting £2,000 through your card.

It is a good offer with no ‘gotchas’. It should be a way of persuading some people to dig out their BA Amex card from the desk drawer where it was placed after earning the 2-4-1 voucher for the year!

You will receive 5,000 Avios as a sign-up bonus on the free British Airways American Express card if you spend £1,000 within 90 days of signing up.

To qualify for the bonus, you must NOT, currently or in the previous 24 months, have held any other personal American Express card.

You are OK if you had a supplementary card on someone else’s British Airways American Express account.

You are OK if, currently or in the previous 24 months, you have held a Business American Express card.

For clarity, you can still apply for the British Airways American Express card even if you do not qualify for the bonus.  You would still benefit from the companion voucher and the other card benefits.

When you spend £20,000 on the British Airways American Express card, you receive a companion voucher entitling you to book two Avios redemption flights for the miles of one.  This voucher is valid for one year.  (Full taxes and charges need to be paid on both tickets.)

This voucher is the most valuable perk available in the UK airline and hotel credit card sector in my view. It could save you 150,000 or more Avios when used for a long-haul redemption in a premium cabin.

You receive your voucher within a few days of reaching the spending target.  You need to fly the outbound leg of your 2-4-1 flight before the expiry date of the voucher.

If you want more flexibility, the voucher issued with the British Airways Premium Plus American Express card is valid for two years and only requires 10,000 of annual card spend.  The Premium Plus card also has a higher earning rate of 1.5 Avios per £1 on general spend and 3 Avios per £1 on spend with British Airways and BA Holidays.

The voucher with the Premium Plus card is far more powerful than the voucher given with the free British Airways American Express card.  You only need to spend £10,000, instead of £20,000, in a card year to receive it.  More importantly, the Premium Plus voucher is valid for two years.  The voucher on the free British Airways American Express card is only valid for one year.

You receive your voucher within a few days of reaching the spending target.  You need to fly the outbound leg of your 2-4-1 flight before the expiry date of the voucher.

Not showing on my free BA.

  • Rich says:

Or it was click bate? I logged in to my account via your link Rob rather than simply through my app, so you got .1p from Amex x however many did the same. Just kidding!

  • Burrium says:

Not showing on my “paid” BA Card offers.
Please will Rob/Amex issue clarification of this offer.

    • Rob says:

Er, we already have. The article was updated at 8am yesterday!

      • Burrium says:

        Thanks Rob.
I only received an Email timed at 6.04 yesterday, not the later one.
However I do enjoy your Emails and keep up the good work.
        Greatly appreciated
        Regards

It’s not showing on my British Airways American Express Premium Plus

  • Carl says:

If I downgrade to the free card will I get this offer?

    • Wendy says:

You’re still getting same or better as a premium holder. 1 bonus point per £2 is ultimately the same as 1.5 per £1

      • Alex Sm says:

But without paying a hefty £195 annual fee! I’m so happy I downgraded last month after getting a 241 voucher

  • Connor says:

Still not on mine. Is it possible to phone/chat and have it added manually or are they still insisting the offer doesn’t exist?

  • Robert says:

Please can someone clarify, what are we getting above our normal Avios earning on this card? I always thought we got 1 Avios per £2 in all transactions?
To get the maximum from this offer should we do multiple £2 transactions, or would one transaction of £2000 also trigger it?
