More HfP redesign tweaks – let us know what you’d still like to see

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

You may have noticed some more changes in the past week to HfP’s new look. We have been fine-tuning the design as we (and you) get accustomed to it.

In the past couple of weeks, the following changes have been made:

  • Added ‘Next Article’ and ‘Previous Article’ links on posts that are less than a week old. You will now find them under the ‘Today’s Top Stories’ box. Many of you found this a useful way of moving between content.
  • Added a list of the latest comments to the sidebar on article pages, allowing you to see the latest comments across the whole site
  • Fixed an issue with search which was occasionally causing the whole site to grind to halt, or even go down for 5-10 minutes
  • Various other minor tweaks including tightening up padding (mainly on mobile, so less scrolling required), fixing the problem which stopped some articles appearing on Apple News and other bits and bobs. Most don’t mean much on their own but together they make everything a bit more harmonious.

Hopefully, by making these changes, navigating the site is a little easier.

We still hope to introduce a comment sorting function but this is a bigger project than we initially thought and it has been parked for now.

We are also looking into adding a dark mode. We have found some software to do the job but it will need a little customisation.

Let us know below if you have any other comments or thoughts of what you would like to see. We welcome all feedback, large or small (small is easier to fix). Let us know what device you are using if it is a layout issue.

PS. if you can’t see the changes properly, make sure to empty your browser cache. The easiest way to do this is CTRL + F5 on Windows and CMD + R on Apple Macs.

Can you make the page remember where you last were on comments? Eg if I’ve read up to page 4 of comments then when I reload the page later it should take me back to the last comment I got to rather than back to page 1?
Also notifications of replies to your original comments? I write a comment but then to save me constantly checking for a reply could I receive a notification(since you have my email address anyway).
Final idea… why don’t you have an app? Would allow for push notifications then

    • Lady London says:

Good idea. Not sure Rob wants to go another round of costs right now though… let’s get the site get settled in first 🙂

  • ChrisBCN says:

Some way of knowing who has replied to a comment I have made please!

  • johnny_c-l says:

Great to have latesf comments back, could we have it on the homepage too? Used to go to the homepage then click on latest comments to keep up with the chat during the day.

Secondly, I keep hitting the reply button by mistake when scrolling, would be better if it was further to the left.

I’ve gotten used to the all white look now, but still miss the old HfP logo!

    • Wollhouse says:

+1 on the hitting the reply when scrolling. Constantly do this when looking on my iPhone. First world problem, I know…..

      • Colin MacKinnon says:

        +2 !

      • ChrisW says:

I came here to post the same thing. Constantly hitting the Reply button by accident with my right thumb while scrolling.

        • Rob says:

But we put it there because everyone wanted it moving from the left!

          • Peter K says:

I scroll both left and right handed I’ve discovered so whichever side you put the reply button I hit it by mistake 🙄

          • Mr(s) Entitled says:

There are a lot more right handed people.

          • Rob says:

But your thumb, if right handed, would swipe on the left of the screen unless you have Trump-style baby hands.

          • MD says:

As a right handed person who typically holds the phone and scrolls through comments using my left hand, the change to move the reply button to the right side has been a vast improvement.

On the rare occasions I hold the phone in my left hand and scroll using my right, it tends to be with my right thumb and more in the middle of the screen. I don’t know how these people are accidentally hitting the reply button now. Are you all left handed?

It would seem strange to me for a right hand dominant person to hold the phone and scroll in your dominant hand, tying it up whilst your non dominant hand can’t do much.

          • KBuffett says:

Still badly positioned. Use some software that will tell you how many times it’s hit without a comment being typed

          • Andrew Mc says:

Just to the left of the date stamp?

          • AJA says:

You can’t win. You can’t please all of the people all of the time. I am happy to have reply on the right as it is now. The only other option is to have it in the middle.

I think the changes you’ve made are great. TBH I’ve forgotten what the old website looked like. The only thing is like is a chat forum which would facilitate seeing replies to my comments but appreciate that’s for the future. Keep up the good work.

          • Callum says:

That’s interesting. My hands are (genuinely!) very, very big but I always scroll on the right hand side of the screen with my right thumb.

If I scrolled on the other side then my thumb would be covering up the content – I assumed that was the “normal” way to do it, but maybe not!

      • Harry T says:

        +4

    • Rob says:

No space on the home page!

  • GW says:

    Yes, do a dark mode!!!

  • KBuffett says:

    Full forum functionality
    Old logo
There is more valuable than active members for when you sell up Rob, I’m. It sure number of comments is as useful.
Active members are a different ballgame.
You can offer members special offers etc too

    • Lady London says:

would be so nice to find a place to integrate a mini version of the old logo and strip sometimes.

    • cinereus says:

Old logo is trivially achievable with a greasemonkey script if it makes a difference to you.

  • Louie says:

I’d like the comment page numbers at the top of the comments as well as the bottom…. if you read the article later in the day you get to the bottom (of the article) and then have to go to the bottom of the comments to click on page 1 if you want to read them in order.

    • RussellH says:

Yes please – anything to make it easier to start at the beginning and not the end.

TBH I really do not understand why the site (or, presumably, Wordpress) would be designed so that comments did not always start at the beginning!

And fewer, longer, pages would, IMHO, be better than lots of short ones. For myself, I do not see the attraction of separate pages when sites list things (though they all do – I would prefer one page of 200 comments rather than ten pages of 20 comments.)
As a temporary work around you could put the /comment-page-1 link that in in the chat text at the top of every page.

Newspapers have the main headlines at the font, not inside back page.

      • Bagoly says:

I share your point of view, but we are in a minority.
Much of the world consuming media now cares only about what is the latest, not about a forward flow of logic, questions, challenges, and answers.
I suppose it is true that yesterday’s newspapers aren’t on the stand at all!

  • Doug M says:

Latest comments was good. Agree a dark mode would be nice.
