Alaska Airlines will join the oneworld alliance on 31st March 2021

In February, Alaska Airlines announced its intentions to join the oneworld alliance.  It will become the 14th full member.

The airline was hoping to complete formalities in record time, with membership finalised by the end of 2020. This has now fallen through, and the airline has just announced that 31st March 2021 is the revised joining date.

Because of the existing British Airways / Alaska partnership, covered in this article, you are gaining less than you think from their entry into oneworld.

Alaska Airlines joins oneworld early

It is already possible to spend Avios on Alaska.  The problem is that you only can book by calling British Airways as it is not integrated into ba.com.  This should change once Alaska joins oneworld fully.

The real benefit is from tier points.  Whilst you currently earn Avios when flying with Alaska, you do NOT earn British Airways Executive Club tier points.  This will now change.

British Airways Executive Club Silver and Gold members will also get access to the full range of oneworld benefits when flying with Alaska, including lounge access, priority check-in, baggage, boarding and preferred seat selection.

Members of other oneworld frequent flyer programmes have more to gain from this announcement than Executive Club members, as it will open up Alaska award inventory to them for the first time.

I would like to book the £400 Marriott deal for my parents. What’s the best way of going about this; will they need to show my Platinum card at checkout/billing time? Is it sufficient that the family name matches the name on the card, or is it best to book my father under my name?

    • JP-MCO says:

Others will confirm but I’m sure the stay would have to be paid for on the eligible Platinum card.

    • StillintheSun says:

Nice idea. I’d probably just book it online and then call up the hotel and let them know that the stay is a present to your parents and you would like to settle the cost before they arrive using your card.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Do you care about the points going to your account? If not just book under their name and give them your card.

They don’t check the name on the card in uk.

  • Cheshire Pete says:

Your link didn’t take me to the Top Up registration page, Rob, had to search the offer out from Lightning deals. Yeah Amazon also sneaked out a 10% discount on iTunes gift cards the other day, just before Prime Day started. It was very limited and you had to stumble across it! Good saving if you pay for Apple services per month.

    • Cheshire Pete says:

Just to clarify, as I wasn’t sure this was going to work! But in the first email you get it doesn’t show the extra £10 at all in the confirmation. Made me think had they exceeded the number limit stated in the t&s’s! But it it get added when applied to the top up status about 5 minutes later, then a 2nd email comes later showing this also.

    • Claire says:

Do you mean you can pay for Apple music with an itunes gift card?

      • Cheshire Pete says:

Yes. I do this every month. I generally get 6% off iTunes cards via Perkbox. Sometimes Costco sells packs of £60 for about £54, so the Amazon 10% was really good. I got a £100 for £90. It’s gone now anyhow! But yes I generally get Apple Music Family £14.99 / month and your saving 6% generally by pre paying discounted cards.

        • Claire says:

Thank you for that, I did not know you could do that! Scottish Friendly have discount gift cards service which I use all the time. Vectis card I think it is called. 7% off Argos, around 4-6% off supermarkets, 10% off restaurants etc
I assume there is a place in settings where you can select to pay Apple music by gift card balance?

          • Tariq says:

If you have a gift card balance on your App Store account, then that balance is used first before the payment card on file.

          • Nick_C says:

Pay for Apple Music a year in advance and you save a further 17%. £99 for the year (individual).

      • Chrisasaurus says:

Yes like Amazon it’s the default payment method

Anyone know if or how you can pay for the annual plan with gift card credit?

In the US they are apparently merging iTunes and Apple store gift cards into one system which will obv mean the end to these discounts if it comes here too…

  • Martin Clarke says:

I haven’t heard anything back from the hotel booking service (Amex Platinum deal) although I sent it yesterday morning. Is that right? I imagine they must have had a lot of people wanting their service

    • Rhys says:

Emyr was prioritising Langley stays but hopefully he’ll get back to you today 🙂

  • Alan says:

Oh, when I saw the headline I thought you meant Amex had responded to complaints and extended the offer to previously excluded cardholders, but sadly not 🙁

  • Nick_C says:

Pay for Apple Music a year in advance and you save a further 17%. £99 for the year (individual).

  • Stanley says:

So my Langley points booking in early December, I can now drop £400 on dinner and the spa, and get it all back. Now that is good news. I think @Anna and some others may be in the same boat too…..

    • Andrew says:

Likelihood of restaurants and spas being open in December approaching nil.

      • Stanley says:

        Thats the spirit Andrew!

      • Rob says:

Not open ‘for mixed groups’. Even under the new rules in Liverpool you can eat with your family.

Met an astonishing cafe dragon on Sunday who a) wanted my little boy to wear a mask and b) would not accept a single ‘track and trace’ smartphone check-in because my wife could not provide written proof to her that she was actually my wife and that we lived together.

        • Stanley says:

There are definitely some very odd people who are loving the crazy rules and regs. Enjoying their moment with a clipboard.

        • Andrew says:

I guess time will tell. Certainly if Labour get their way we’re heading to a full lockdown for a period.

And yes some staff really do seem to be letting this power go to their heads and are enjoy a bit of rule enforcement. Everything really does seem a lot of hassle these days.

          • Stanley says:

Yep. Doing some things is soul destroying at the moment. I like to think (hope) that Boris has the minerals to keep things open as much as possible.

        • Harry T says:

Was she concerned you were taking your kids out to lunch with a mistress? Seems a little bizarre!

          • Anna says:

Well, he might have been Neil Ferguson ..

          • Lady London says:

moral hazard I suppose @Harry T! though some of us will never agree on what age children should wear a mask. Apparently at least one airline in the US was insisting for a two-year-old…good luck getting a two year old to do anything they dont want to.

For airlines in UK it’s about age 6 or so I think when they want the child wearing one?

        • Brian says:

Hope you left and went elsewhere!!

        • Anna says:

Lol. My teenager does all our Track & Trace stuff as he’s the most tech-savvy of us!

        • TGLoyalty says:

          under 11’s are exempt!

          • Rob says:

            I know!

          • tony says:

Interesting as I’ve stayed in both the Doubletree Tower Hill and Andaz Liverpool Street in the last 6 weeks. Both properties are actively promoting the CDC standard of everyone over 2 must wear a mask. Now, City of London hotels midweek are quiet enough anyway and i can’t see them being a top family pick, but even so….

    • Anna says:

Ha. I haven’t got a Platinum Amex so no £400 offer, plus my stay misses the current cut off for the £50 off spend offer by 3 days! Hoping for more offers in December maybe?

  • KBuffett says:

Is the Grosvenor on the list to get any extra perks from Emyr?
Is it a nice place to spend the night or perhaps who, I live in Surrey

    • Rob says:

Yes – see the article yesterday. Upgrade, free brekky, $100 credit.

      • TGLoyalty says:

nope you always have to compare all the offers

Find Emyr and FHR work best when you dont have status and when trips are last min

        • Kevin C says:

I don’t think Grosvenor House is on FHR.

Emyr service also offers upgrade on availability and he is very good at communicating with the hotels. I haven’t compared prices though.

      • Rob says:

No. The Grosvenor is discounting massively from BAR so Emyr is less value here unless he can access something under BAR too.

I am attracted by the £260 ‘work’ package which gets me 6am check-in and (next day) 6pm check-out. Throw in lounge access (it IS open) via my status and £140 to blow in the restaurant and it could work nicely.

        • Kevin C says:

There are also a couple of hotels that have a family ‘buy one room, get one half price’ offer. The Grosvenor and the Park Tower have it, not sure if there are others.
Breakfast and a late check out are included. How late doesn’t seem easy to find out.
I know main restaurant is closed in Park Tower but we would be going for room service anyway as that is a family treat for us.

  • Barry says:

Amazon balance topped up and HfP subscription paid!
