What really happened (possibly) with the £400 American Express Platinum / Marriott offer

The recent offer of £400 credit for American Express Platinum cardholders to spend at eight UK luxury Marriott-managed hotels created quite a stir.

In particular, a lot of people who did not sign up for the offer have been complaining that they were discriminated against by Amex in not receiving it.

I have been doing some digging into the offer and how it was set up. The bottom line, for absolute clarity, is that I have been told that all Platinum cardholders had an equal opportunity to register.

American Express Amex Platinum card

This may or may not be correct but that is the official line. What may add to the confusion is that the Amex mobile app will often show fewer offers than the desktop site.

How the launch day panned out

First, some background. This offer launched on a unique day. I was leading with an exclusive story – that Tesco and Avios were splitting up. Then, prior to the stock market opening, IAG announced that Alex Cruz was stepping down as CEO and Chairman of British Airways.

These two stories meant that I was already at my computer at 6am, even though it was a school day and I had children to deposit. Even by 6am, a couple of (clearly insomniac) HfP readers had spotted the £400 Marriott offer on their Amex Platinum accounts and emailed me about it.

By 7.45am, all three stories were live on the site. It ended up being our biggest ever day, with almost 110,000 page views.

If it hadn’t been for the Tesco and Cruz stories, I wouldn’t have opened my laptop until at least 8.30am and things may have gone differently.

Who received the offer?

Amex and Marriott had a plan. The offer was meant to appear on ALL American Express Platinum and Centurion cards overnight, although in reality it dripped out across the morning. My own version only appeared about 10am.

The only exceptions were:

supplementary cards, and

cards where the cardholder had asked not to receive any marketing offers

What happened with registration?

As was clear in the offer terms, registration was limited to 2,000 people.

HfP has a disproportionately high number of Platinum-holding readers. We are a key third party channel for sales of The Platinum Card in the UK, and even if you didn’t apply via us, our reader profile is the sort for whom The Platinum Card is often a logical choice.

On a normal day, I would have popped up an article by 10am and it would have been modestly read. Our peak readership time is 8.45am to 9am and then people get down to some work. Registration slots may still have been available by the time the Amex email blast went out.

As it turned out, HfP was having a day like no other day due to the Tesco and Cruz news. The Marriott story was also pulling in its own traffic from our social media feeds.

Within a few hours, all 2,000 registrations had gone and the Marriott offer was automatically removed from the Amex system. People who tried to register after this did not see it.

Whilst there were probably a few exceptions, almost all 2,000 were HfP readers. How many other Platinum holders religiously check their card account for new offers before breakfast?

American Express and Marriott had to cancel their email blast. This may not have been a bad thing, since the offer would have filled up within minutes and many more people would have known that they had missed out.

So …. I am told that all Platinum and Centurion cardmembers were targeted with this offer. If you didn’t get to register, it is apparently simply bad luck that you did not read HfP in the window before all the slots were taken.

Had it been a normal news day, with the normal level of traffic to the site, it would have lasted longer – although the way it turned out meant that we maximised the number of readers who got in.

Of course, the big question now is whether readers can get to the participating hotels by 19th December when the offer is due to end. I believe that The Westbury, one of the eight UK hotels, is not reopening for some time, choosing to bring forward a refurbishment. I am still hoping to squeeze in a night and a decent meal by the 19th, if only to pick up 10,000 Marriott Bonvoy points (what a Platinum gets for spending £400 with the current promo) for the stay.

  • Paul E says:

It was still available the next day. I read the overnight email on the offer and registered at about 8am on the 13, more than 24 hours after HfP posted the offer. I’m surprised, as I was then, that the offer was still there.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Exactly if everyone had equal chance that wouldn’t have happened

      • Alan says:

Agree, I’m afraid I’m not buying this story by Amex. It was clearly more targeted.

        • TGLoyalty says:

They may ofcourse meant to have do it the way they have written but they 100% didn’t do it that way!

  • Pawel says:

I stayed at JW booked cheapest suite for 358 with lounge access (lounge is operating)
Got upgradebto executive suite with gold elite status (status via amex.platinum nice for 900gbp per night) total spend with some food at steakhouse 404 -400 😉 nice for Friday break with family

  • Nick says:

As my old US boss used to say, “If you snooze, you lose” 🙂

  • Peter S says:

Good morning Rob. Thanks for all your good work, as ever. Can you please elaborate on your last line of the above article “if only to pick up 10,000 Marriott Bonvoy points for the stay!” i.e. is there a separate promotion to earn such a weighty 10,000 points?
    Many thanks

    • Ikaz says:

Simply the standard earning + the current 2500 bonus points per stay + potentially a bonus points welcome gift for gold/platinum /titanium members

    • Rob says:

10k is what a Platinum member gets for spending £400 with the current promo.

  • Andrew says:

Absolutely NOT true. I checked my offers constantly and I mean constantly from around 6am throughout the day. People were also reporting that the offer was still available later in the day, and the following day. I continued to check, but nothing. Of course I also rang Brighton and they even checked with marketing and I was told I wasn’t targeted. So I think Amex have fed you a pack of lies here Rob to make the story go down better with us that it was the early bird catches the worm rather than than targeting certain people. So this has made me even more angry about the situation!!

    • Graeme says:

I am in the same boat as Andrew, checked my offers regularly throughout the day from the moment I saw the post. Nothing for me, while still seeing people here and on the Amex Plat FB group saying they had just signed up for the offer. This was still happening on the next day. From the chat on FB it appeared to be disproportionally targeted to those in the south of England (I am in Scotland) but may also be usage based? I put through 2-3k per month on the card which may be low. Sorry Rob, but think you are being misled here.

    • Alan S says:

Yeah it’s categorically not the case.

I checked my offers that morning at 6am prior to walking the dog and then every 30 minutes afterwards, when Rob and others had it appear latterly.

Nothing on mine and I have about 70 other offers on there just now.

      • Andrew says:

And Rob himself is contradicting himself or rewriting history. He said himself it wasn’t on his offers when he posted the article. Then about 10am posted an update saying it had now popped up and that we should check again. This is Amex PR doing a coverup – but actually the only thing worse than missing out on something by being excluded is by being told it was your fault you missed out on it. Feel even more insulted now!

    • happeemonkee says:

Same here Andrew. I checked at 6 am and it was not in my offers. Throughout the day I read people had just checked and it was available to them. It was never on my offers and Amex have confirmed to me it was targeted and I was not a recepiant. I’m done with them now

      • Katherine says:

I didn’t have the offer appear when I looked on my mobile but then read a comment about someone seeing it on their PC but not their mobile. I checked on my laptop and it was there.
Not saying that this is the hard and fast reason it didn’t appear for everyone, but just a possible explanation.

    • Miles says:

Same for me. Checked early and never got offer.

  • ChrisC says:

People who say they don’t want to receive offer emails really can’t complain when they don’t receive offer emails.

    • happeemonkee says:

@ ChrisC I’m signed up to receive everything, still didn’t get it

      • TGLoyalty says:

exactly I have contact me via every method possible as I know AMEX offers are worth the junk but nothing here on this or Harrods.

as I said in another comment this story insults my intelligence

  • Paul E says:

There seems to be general confusion about both the Marriott and Harrods promotions. Various people have suggested, apparently confirmed by Amex, that all Platinum cardholders at least were eligible for the offers. It’s increasingly apparent that the Harrods offer was targeted and not available to everyone and who knows if all Platinum cardholders could have selected the Marriott offer if they were quick enough. I remain surprised that some 24 hours later I was able to register for the Marriott offer if only 2,000 registrations were available with any Centurion or Platinum cardholder eligible especially with £400 cash back. Assuming people are accurately reporting what Amex has told them, Amex don’t seem to know which groups of cardholders could apply either!

Not that any of this matters. The offers have moved on.

    • Andrew says:

Yes and seeing the offer mentioned in the comments article at 6am, before the main article I was checking constantly amid reports of “thanks Rob, just saved it” etc. People were saving the offer all morning and nowhere to be seen on my card or many other people’s.

      • Stu N says:

Exactly the same experience for me. I saw the HfP article very early and the offer never appeared on app or desktop site. I have historically spent much more with Marriott than any other hotel chain so it makes sense that I wouldn’t be targeted. In the end the trip I may have used it on got cancelled due to England’s lockdown so nothing lost.

I suspect theories around geographical location won’t stack up as most Plat card holders will be in London and SE.

      • Alan says:

Spot on, Andrew. I checked mobile and desktop throughout the day with no sign of it despite more and more people newly signing up for it.

  • Andrew says:

“complaining that they were discriminated against by Amex”

Good lord. While it might be annoying if you’re not targeted for an offer we’re not exactly talking about a breach of your human rights.

    • Stu N says:

      Quite.

    • Bagoly says:

Very true. But while one expects discounts, even 75% off to be targeted to people who say have spent a lot recently, but not on that brand, £400 back on £400 spent is much more like a free gift, and in the current environment comes across as “These people have been refunded their annual fee; these ones have not”.

      • Alan says:

Exactly, as the FOS says it’s about treating customers fairly.

      • Chris says:

I got the Marriott offer but have always been declined the 20k/30k/40k retention bonuses mentioned by many on here. I’d rather have had those as they have more value than a free stay in a hotel 20 miles from my home.

But that’s the nature of marketing.

    • BlueThroughCrimp says:

The entitlement of some beggars belief.

    • @mkcol says:

So many people really need to get over themselves.
They for whatever reason didn’t get the offer, whether targeted or not and then feel aggrieved? Pathetic.
