Got Amex Gold? You will receive a Priority Pass airport lounge card very soon

As we suggested was likely last year, American Express has announced some good news for Preferred Rewards Gold credit and charge card holders.

Effectively immediately, your Lounge Club airport lounge access card is being replaced by a Priority Pass.

If you have an Amex Gold card, you will receive your Priority Pass within the next three weeks.

The terms are unchanged

This is NOT the ‘unlimited access for you and a guest’ Priority Pass that you receive with American Express Platinum.

It will have the same rules as your existing Lounge Club card:

  • you will receive two free lounge visits per card year
  • additional visits will be automatically charged to your American Express Gold card at the rate of £20

If you have already used one or two of your annual lounge passes, these will be deducted from the opening balance on your Priority Pass.

When does my Lounge Club card stop working?

28th February.

Is Priority Pass better than Lounge Club?

Yes, for two reasons:

Priority Pass has a bigger network than Lounge Club

Despite both being owned by the same company, Collinson, the Lounge Club network is smaller.

The Priority Pass network has over 1,200 lounges in it (albeit quite a few are currently shut, but give it time ……).

This HfP article is a little out of date but it gives you an idea of the differences between Lounge Club and Priority Pass. Back in 2018, additional UK lounges included Heathrow, Southend, Newquay, Norwich, Exeter, Glasgow, Jersey, Doncaster Sheffield and Derry.

Priority Pass has digital membership cards

You no longer need to worry about forgetting your plastic Lounge Club card.

You can download the Priority Pass app to your smartphone and use the digital membership card to enter lounges.

Conclusion

This is a genuine improvement to American Express Preferred Rewards Gold, giving access to a wider range of lounges.

Being able to use a digital membership card stored on your phone will also make your life easier.

If you don’t have Amex Gold, we ran a full Preferred Rewards Gold review last week.

With NO FEE for the first year, two airport lounge visits via Priority Pass and a whopping 20,000 American Express Membership Rewards points as a sign-up bonus (converting to 20,000 Avios), it is an impressive package. It is also a great first step for someone starting off with miles and points.

So my 1st anniversary for my gold card was on the 7th. Can i ask, since i used my 2 lounge passes last year (luckily) am i entitled to the 2 new priority passes for this year from the anniversary of my amex cArd? Or does the anniversary start, say the day you received your physical lounge club card (or registered for it)

  • BS says:

Great news. I abandoned my card because the lounge club card was consecutively declined at 3 airports. My two free passes remained unused.

    • Aston100 says:

Was it because they didn’t recognise the Lounge Pass, or was it because they felt they were ‘full’?

  • Ready Togo says:

Having previously had gold charge, platinum and gold credit cards, I currently only have a basic Amex rewards card to keep my points alive. Appreciate that I wouldn’t get the points bonus but when would I qualify for free for the first year on the gold credit again… ie is there time frame for that element? Or is it a one off first time offer only? Thanks

  • Dave Barron says:

Hi Rob. Will my wife as an additional card holder on my PRGC Charge also get the priority pass card posted out? I assume it will just be 2 visits per main card holder (as before) rather than 2 visits for each card? Thanks.

  • Buxton says:

This is a nice change, did always wonder why LoungeKey was the partner originally

  • xcalx says:

More lounges to be turned away from.

    • Aston100 says:

      This. Definitely this.

    • kitten says:

      This.
When lounges that are clearly empty keep refusing Priority Pass – or forcing extra ‘reservation’ or cheap champagne fees…

You cast your mind back to every time you cancelled your Priority Pass lounge pass due to it not getting you access to…er….lounges….Priority Pass got their revenge if you eventually decided to give them another go, by insisting that any previous email address you had used with them even on a previous closed account, could not be used.

Amateurish I gave up on them.

  • Geoff says:

A little off topic but hopefully someone can answer please. I took out Amex Gold last June but due to Covid have not flown since and am very unlikely to do so before the year is up (both my wife and I are in a higher risk category). Is there anyway the passes can be rolled over into the next membership year?

  • Greg says:

Does the Priority Pass card expire when you cancel your Gold card ?

    • Rob says:

Yes – because it is automatically suspended when there isn’t an active credit card ‘behind’ it to charge additional guests to.
