Another £175 of free money for American Express Platinum cardholders

American Express has launched another giveaway for holders of The Platinum Card.

This is presumably to convince them to keep paying the £575 annual fee for a lot of – admittedly very good – travel benefits at a time when no-one is travelling …..

It will only appear on your main card, not any supplementaries. It will not appear on Business Platinum cards.

American Express Amex Platinum card

IMPORTANT: I have the offer in the Amex app on my iPhone but it is NOT showing on the website. If you can’t see it in one spot, look in the other. Amex has confirmed to us that all cardholders will receive it.

What am I getting?

You will receive 100% cashback when you spend up to £175 (so basically £175 cashback) at:

  • Waitrose
  • Deliveroo
  • Harvey Nichols
  • Selfridges

Apart from Deliveroo, they are valid online or instore (when they reopen).

The offer runs to 18th July. This implies that it may be the last offer of its type that we see.

As a reader pointed out in the comments, it is a bit odd that Amex didn’t choose to make this ‘£30 per month for six months’. It would have done wonders for card retention.

How does the offer work?

The good news is that you don’t need to spend the £175 in one transaction, or even at the same retailer.

Each purchase you make at the above retailers will be refunded, 100%, onto your card within 2-3 days. This keeps on going until you hit the £175 cap.

Are all Platinum cardholders receiving this?

American Express says ‘Yes’. That said, I assume it won’t appear for people who are locked out of offers because they are in default or took advantage of the covid payment holidays.

If you do not see it – perhaps you are one of those people who haven’t received any offers for months due to IT issues – then I would call Amex to have it added.

Don’t forget to register before doing any spending!

  • DT says:

A friend I had referred to this card a couple of years ago was complaining to me that he did not receive this offer and mentioned that he took a covid payment holiday last year in May, just for the one month and paid his May/June balance in full by July.

At the time Amex CS told him that he would not be eligible for the referral program or any special offers until 2021. He called to ask them about this offer but they turned him down, again citing the covid payment holiday, this time they couldnt give him a time frame on when his account would return to having access to these things.

Does anyone know how long this actually takes?

  • NS says:

Can I apply for a Platinum Card today and would I get this offer? Currently hold the BA Premier Amex, but not Platinum and was planning on trying it for a few months and then maybe cancelling for a pro-rata refund.

    • Rhys says:

We don’t know for sure but it’s unlikely you’d get the offer unfortunately

  • Ali says:

Having not received any offers for a while, after reading this thread I contacted amex via the app chat. First agent gave me a generic response about targeted offers. Then when I specifically asked about the 175 offer they transferred me to someone else who added it manually. Thanks!

As an aside, anyone managed to get the PayPal offer added manually?

    • Sandgrounder says:

Has anyone actually had any money credit from the PayPal offer yet?

    • Nick says:

The PayPal credit is targeted (funded by PP I assume), so they shouldn’t be adding it manually. The latest spend one will be funded by Amex so they’re less strict on adding it to other cards.

  • Binks says:

Hi Rob, is the offer available for new card applicants? I was thinking of applying and given the offer (if available) would be an extra incentive. Also how many points are given for personal platinum card referrals at present? Gold is giving 9k points. Thx

    • Dan says:

Reports on here saying that you needed to be a Platinum member by a certain date to be eligible. Personal Platinum referral is 12k I believe

      • Andrew says:

It depends what card the referee has – a Platinum member can refer someone to gold or platinum and get 12k. So I think whatever card a gold refers you to they get 9k?

    • Rob says:

No idea but I absolutely would not bank on it.

  • Binks says:

    Thanks Dan – appreciated.

  • Russel says:

Sorry. is the platinum card metal or plastic?

    • Doug M says:

Metal. Maybe you could ask for a plastic one.

    • Rob says:

      Metal

    • Andrew says:

There is an option online to request a replacement card and to request that card as metal. Will arrive in 48hrs. Supplementary platinum is issued as a metal one but the AC card in your own name is issued only as plastic. Golds supps are issued as plastic obviously too.

  • Alex M says:

Call them and tell you’ve lost your card, they will reissue you a new, metal card.

    • Sandgrounder says:

When I ordered my replacement on the website shortly after metal launch, there was an option ‘order metal card’ or similar.

  • Kay says:

For Harvey Nics safest to buy a gift card. That way if you need to return anything the money just goes back on the gift card instead of your card, cancelling the offer. Can’t use them online to pay but buy stuff then reply to your online order with your Gift Card number and customer service will refund your card and cancel the balance of your gift card.
