IHG Rewards has rolled over your elite nights from 2020

As part of its plans to make it easier for you to earn or retain your IHG Rewards status in 2021, the programme promised to roll over your elite night total from 2020.

This has now been done. My account shows me on 14 nights for the year to date, which clearly I haven’t done.

You can check your total by logging in to the IHG Rewards website here.

How many nights do you need for IHG Rewards status in 2022?

As well as rolling over your elite nights, IHG has retained the lower status thresholds that it introduced last year. This means:

  • Gold Elite requires 7,500 base points or 7 nights
  • Platinum Elite requires 30,000 base points or 30 nights
  • Spire Elite requires 55,000 points or 55 nights

The original requirements are shown on ihg.com here.

If you are qualifying via points, you can earn a bonus with the current IHG promotion

The current IHG Rewards Club promotion has a twist as you can see here.

It is valid for stays up to 31st March, which admittedly isn’t very handy for most of us.

You receive 2,000 bonus points for every two nights you stay. These do not need to be consecutive nights. Importantly, these 2,000 bonus points will also count for status. This means you can make a decent dent into your 2022 requalification.

You need to register on ihg.com here. You need to use code 42050 when prompted.

Will IHG Rewards roll over your status anyway?

Good question.

I think some programmes are going to be in a tricky position later this year. It would not go down well with members if they moved stays to IHG to earn bonus elite points in the Spring promo and then IHG rolled over everyone anyway.

These are also global schemes. Hotels may be closed in the UK, but most are open in the US and China and those are what wags IHG’s tail.

On the other hand, is IHG – or anyone, and I include British Airways etc in this – willing to risk losing a huge chunk of its elite base, giving those customers an excuse to check out the competition next year? Realistically they will want every customer they can get.

IHG One Rewards update – April 2024:

Get bonus points: IHG One Rewards is offering 2,000 bonus points for every two cash nights you stay (not necessarily consecutive) between 1st April and 31st May 2024. You can read our full article here and you can register here.

Interesting that both airlines and hotels are writing off 2021 and rolling over elite status for another year. I just got my FlyingBlue status extended for another year as well.

I wonder how long before BA do the same … but being BA, they will probably want a lot of negative flak thrown at them first before they relent at the last minute!

  • Nick G says:

My account now shows zero points zero nights even though I had stayed 6 nights last year. Available points is correct. Any ideas?

  • Rich says:

They’ve not extended Ambassador status again or the free weekend night stay and have written asking for my $200 renewal fee. They’ll get it when I’m allowed to travel again!

    • Genghis says:

As I’ve posted before, there’s no incentive to keep AMB going continuously. Before, the 10% rebate encouraged me to sign up again so I didn’t lose it. Now – just let it lapse and then sign up again when you actually need it. The new sign up and renewal prices are the same.

      • TGLoyalty says:

exactly bit of an own goal there.

      • Chrisasaurus says:

You can just imagine the discussion- the discount was ‘costing’ $x dollars in ‘forgiven’ revenue and we can add back in that revenue by making the change .

They removed an incentive to renew in the middle of a pandemic would be another way to see it!

  • Anna says:

I contacted IHG recently asking if the would extend the offer they had last year for renewing or joining Ambassador. This was a bonus free night certificate worth 40k points after completing a Kimpton/IC/Regent stay. Their response has been that they probably won’t and that there will be other offers this year. I have pushed back (as they say) saying that I wouldn’t have renewed Ambassador if it wasn’t for this offer, and also pointed out how bad a deal the BOGOF night is at the moment (rates are way above other refundable rates so the savings are minimal in a lot of hotels), but I think it might be a lost cause!
(FAO @Peggerz and anyone else in this situation)

    • Simon D says:

Thank you Anna. This is a useful update . I have a night booked for April under this offer but I think that the probability of it being permissible is very low. Ambassador is looking like poor value at the moment.

      • Anna says:

Me too – though it’s being reported that hotels might be allowed to re-open from Easter weekend, so fingers x’d. You’d then have to use the voucher before the end of April, of course, but it’s theoretically do-able! We have one unused voucher already (we both renewed under the offer), but this was triggered within 48 hours of the qualifying stay so you shouldn’t have to wait long for it to appear, hopefully.

        • AndyGWP says:

This is an interesting one but seems to tie in with Rob’s post the other day that these loyalty programmes are looked at from an international perspective, rather than a national one.

For example, I’ve no idea how much business travel in the States is being impacted by this, but it is quite conceivable that there’s more (renewal) revenue to be made from the punters over there, than would be lost by pee’ing off the punters over here

    • Aston100 says:

Is there some secret IHG customer service team that you all manage to have meaningful conversations with?
The bunch I talk to on live chat or those who I eventually get routed to on the phone are all pretty useless and clueless.

      • Harry T says:

Ambassador desk are actually very good. They sorted out my recent prepaid booking fiasco within a couple of days. They also have solved various other issues very rapidly. It’s just a shame most Intercontinental hotels are a bit rubbish…

        • Anna says:

Yes – email Ambassador & they usually respond within a day or two even though they can’t always help!

  • james says:

Anybody been successful getting their 5000 bonus points from Creation offer last year? I’ve chased them several times no response.

    • The Original David says:

I got mine after 3 attempts. First they said I wasn’t targeted for the offer, then they wanted to see the email saying I was, and finally they didn’t think I’d done a qualifying stay yet! But got there in the end.

  • Nik says:

I now see these nights on my account, but on my desktop login it still shows a target of 75,000 for Spire elite. The app shows it as 55,000.
Is that the same for everyone else?

    • TGLoyalty says:

      Try clearing your cookies.

    • Mark says:

The 55,000 is the reduced COVID threshold. As Rob has said these have been rolled over from last year I assume that the 75,000 is an error on the website.

      • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

It seems most are now seeing the 55k threshold on both web and app platforms now. I certainly am (iOS app and iMac – Safari user)

  • Doug M says:

Isn’t one difference between BA elites and hotel elites that BA have a lock on convenience in London and S/SE. Any larger city will mostly have a choice of hotels in central area, whereas BA are the only game from LHR for direct flights.
Also, with flying how much better are AF, KL or LH than BA if going west, I’m sure a year on them will give some perspective to BA.

  • Craig Vassie says:

When I login to IHG I can see the below cut and paste under Maintain Elite Status. The 10K is a much lower requalification target. Thoughts?

You are currently an IHG® Rewards Club Elite member. To maintain your Elite status, either stay at least 10 qualifying nights with us or earn 10,000 qualifying points, within this calendar year. • ChrisC says:

10 nights / 10k points the normal requirements for gold which for this year is 7 nights /7k points.
