British Airways adds four new European routes for Summer

British Airways has announced four new European routes this morning. All are bookable now with Avios, so if you want to take advantage of the guaranteed Avios availability you may want to jump in.

The choice of destinations is a little eclectic, and gives the impression that BA wants to put some pressure on Wizz Air. There is also a distinct focus on the ‘visiting friends and family’ market rather than the holiday market, although there are definitely good weekend break opporunities here.

The new routes are:

  • Wroclaw, Poland
  • Gdansk, Poland
  • Riga, Latvia
  • Cluj-Napoca, Romania

All flights will operate from Heathrow, potentially from Terminal 3.

The frequencies are:

  • Wroclaw – twice per week (Thu, Sun) from 1st July
  • Gdansk – three times per week (Wed, Fri, Sun) from 2nd July
  • Riga – three times per week (Wed, Fri, Sun) from 2nd July
  • Cluj-Napoca – three times per week (Wed, Fri, Sun) from 2nd July

All appear to be 40 tier point routes, one way, in Club Europe so are unlikely to work as cheap tier point runs. Although personally I’d rather pay more per tier point and visit places I actually want to see ….

To quote BA:

“Wroclaw is known for its beautiful architecture and array of stunning bridges and islands that cross the Odra River.

Gdansk, on the Baltic Sea, offers fine museums, a dominating church building and a beautiful old city.

Riga, the largest of all three Baltic capital cities, houses a UNESCO World Heritage site, and is known for its Art Nouveau style buildings.

Cluj-Napoca, or simply Cluj, is Romania’s second largest city and often described as a cultural hub.

British Airways last operated flights to Riga in 2007, and flew briefly to Gdansk between 1999 and the early-2000s. The airline has never served the other two airports.”

And Perugia is definitely starting this year …..

British Airways announced flights to Perugia in Umbria for Summer 2020. For obvious reasons, the route never launched.

It is now happening for Summer 2021, hopefully, with the first flight on 28th June.

To maximise your miles when paying, your best bet is the British Airways American Express Premium Plus card which earns double Avios (3 per £1) when you book at ba.com or via BA Holidays

You do not get double Avios if you book with the free British Airways American Express card, the free Barclaycard Avios Mastercard or the Barclaycard Avios Plus Mastercard.

Another option is American Express Preferred Rewards Gold which offers double points – 2 per £1 – when you book flight tickets directly with an airline.

Tickets are bookable now over at ba.com.

  • Jeffrey Silvers says:

Wroclaw and Gdansk are well worth a visit

  • Karl says:

Gdansk is really nice in summer. Just a short train ride from Soport which seems to be a beach holiday destination of choice for many Polish people, so can get quite crowded. The Baltic Sea is surprisingly warm in August.

  • Nick says:

‘Gives the impression’ it’s a raid on Wizz… it’s a blatant grab! But if it leads to lower fares and more customers exploring these beautiful cities then so much the better.

My only issue is the schedule… 7am departures aren’t fun at all. HAL’s fees mean they don’t stand a chance of competing on cost vs Wizz at Luton, so having a better departure time would give them a real competitive edge. Shame really.

    • TM says:

But they are competing on location of departure airport – so for me a £2 tube journey to T3 vs £40-50 taxi/£20 train to Luton.

      • ZF says:

Completely agree with TM, also time spent to get to LTN and being in well… Luton. Only thing W6 has better is timing, i.e. can make the Friday flight after work.

  • john says:

Riga is a lovely city and worth a visit. Looking forward to Perugia launching! Also a lovely city (got married there!) and area of Italy to visit generally.

  • Gringo says:

Damn they should really start Gdansk earlier. Europa League Final (v likely to be 2 English clubs) taking place in Gdansk next month

    • Ian M says:

I doubt anyone will be allowed to attend, Poland is in full lockdown

  • bafan says:

I was just looking at Cluj yesterday…guess I’ll turn my OTP weekend into a cross country journey :).

  • Swiss Jim says:

Any hotel recommendations to those of us with a stash of hotel points?

    • BP says:

Sofitel Wroclow was nice and about £50 a night. No need to use points!

    • John says:

      DT

    • ZF says:

      Riga:
      1. Marriott – AC Marriott is the only option (standard offering; can have good views)
      2. IHG – Nothing for now 🙁
      3. Accor – Pullman Riga Old Town (probably the best one on the list)
      4. Radisson – Radisson Hotel Old Town Riga or Elizabete (do NOT choose Daugava)
      5. Hilton – Hilton Garden Inn is the only option (standard offering; prime location)

    • Tony1 says:

Sopot Sofitel – Do get the breakfast – its the highlight of the stay.

    • Ian M says:

The Marriott Resort and Spa Sopot is a lovely hotel right on the beach. The hotel is just as close to Gdansk airport as Gdansk.

    • Andrew says:

Hilton have a DoubleTree (city centre) and Hampton (easy, short walk) in Cluj.

  • Pogonation says:

Cluj-Napoca very interesting. I have wanted to visit Transylvania for a long time but just had a look at the prices and Blue Air is £45 return where BA is £450. Blue Air also has better flight times (late friday evening departure and late sunday return to get the most out of your holiday)

    • lcylocal says:

BA prices likely still settling down. Give it a few days and see what the pricing is then.
