Got a Tesco credit card? Jump on a GREAT Hotels.com promotion

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Hotels.com has teamed up with Tesco Bank to offer a special promotion for Tesco credit card holders.

EDIT: Hotels.com amended the landing page around 5pm to add a new bullet point: “5. You must complete your stay in full at your chosen property otherwise you will not be eligible for this offer and will not be credited the additional 750 Tesco Clubcard points.”

It is VERY interesting and well worth a look if you qualify. Many Tesco credit card holders have been emailed the offer directly – if you are opted out of Tesco Bank junk emails, the rules imply you can still take part.

Full details are on this page of Hotels.com.

What is the deal?

It is a very simple one.

If you book a hotel via Hotels.com before 30th September 2021, and stay by 9th January 2022, you will receive 750 Tesco Clubcard points.

You must pay for the stay with a Tesco Bank credit card. The Tesco Bank Bonus Credit Card is excluded.

What are 750 Tesco Clubcard points worth?

Tesco Clubcard is no longer an Avios partner.

However, it IS a Virgin Flying Club partner. 750 Clubcard points will convert (x2.5) into 1,875 Virgin Points. You could get more if you are willing to wait to see if a 10%-30% transfer bonus reappears in the future.

You can also use them at 3x face value with other Tesco Clubcard partners. This HfP article looks at the best Tesco Clubcard travel deals. Good options include:

  • Hotels.com itself (750 points gets you £22.50 off a room)
  • Hilton UK & Ireland (750 points gets you £22.50 off a room)

Both of these deals have small catches which mean that you won’t receive a true 3x face value, but you will get at least 2.5x. With Hotels.com, for example, rooms booked with Clubcard points don’t earn Hotels.com Rewards stamps which are worth 10% of what you spend.

This article explains in detail how to redeem Tesco Clubcard points for Hilton hotel rooms.

What is the small print on the Hotels.com / Tesco Clubcard deal?

Here’s the thing ….

There are a lot of rules, as you can read here, but they don’t actually restrict you in any way.

EDIT: Hotels.com amended the landing page around 5pm to add a new bullet point: “5. You must complete your stay in full at your chosen property otherwise you will not be eligible for this offer and will not be credited the additional 750 Tesco Clubcard points.”

  • You can earn the bonus as many times as you want
  • There is no minimum stay required
  • There is no minimum spend required
  • There are no geographic restrictions
  • You will still earn Hotels.com Rewards stamps if you are logged in whilst booking

The bottom line is that, as long as you pay with a Tesco Bank credit card, you will earn 750 Tesco Clubcard points on every booking.

This offer is even better if you are backpacking

If you are backpacking around India and South East Asia this Summer, there is a great opportunity to maximise this deal.

There are lots of hostels in cities such as Delhi which can be booked on Hotels.com for £3 to £4 per night.

Do check the promotion rules for yourself, but it seems to me that these stays will count. You will earn 1,875 Virgin Points or £22.50 of Hilton credit, Hotels.com credit etc for each £3-£4 hostel stay you book.

The only think you can’t do, as per the rules, is book back-to-back stays in the same property and receive the bonus twice. You can book consecutive nights at different properties and receive the bonus each night.

Conclusion

If you have a Tesco Bank credit card, this is a potentially very lucrative promotion from Hotels.com which you should take very seriously.

You MUST book via this page of Hotels.com.

I strongly recommend studying the full rules here before booking.

Dunno if just me but when I search now it says

“We are currently making improvements to our site and it is temporarily unavailable.”

    Interesting

  • MKB says:

This new term has been added:

“5. You must complete your stay in full at your chosen property otherwise you will not be eligible for this offer and will not be credited the additional 750 Tesco Clubcard points.”

That wasn’t there earlier as I kept a screenshot.

    • Rob says:

      Thanks, updated.

    • John says:

Can you post the screenshot as I forgot to take one.
      Thanks

      • MKB says:

My screenshot has my hotels.com username in the top right, so I’m not sure how transferable it would be as evidence. Besides, doesn’t seem to be a way of posting here.

    • Lady London says:

And meanwhile, the BA to Nectar transfers problem that suddenly ensued after its launch, necessitating the ‘removal for repair’ of the ability to transfer Avios to Nectar online that had worked so well, has still not been solved by BA to enable transfers out of avios Nectar. After so far, 6 months? of intensive IT effort? at BA Towers, to solve this.

    • RogerC says:

      How will they know?

  • Bonglim says:

I diligently took a photo/ screenshot of the ‘full terms and conditions’

They have added number 5 to the booking page, not the complete terms and conditions. If anyone knows how to get an archived copy of that page that would be useful.

  • Will says:

Hotels.com have now been through and cancelled all my bookings. Not sure if that’s thanks to my card being blocked but there’s a fat lot I can do about it now.

    • Blenz101 says:

If your card is blocked then of course they are going to cancel the bookings if they don’t process past the pending stage.

If you are the same poster who was having problems with mystery error messages all day and immediate fraud on the card you may want to get your IT setup checked. Seems much more likely you have a virus or something intercepting you internet traffic than suffering fraud so quickly from a well known website.

      • Will says:

I’m a Software Engineer and I use Ubuntu – that doesn’t mean to say I am totally impervious to such things but I’m fairly confident that it wasn’t anything to do with anything on my end. I’m not suggesting Hotels.com (the website) is insecure however it does seem likely my card number was disclosed to one of the hostels I booked in with. The timing is more than a little suspect too.

The earlier messages were not the result of declines but some sort of internal fraud check by Hotels.com – I rang Tesco Bank and they could only see one txn which they had declined because I had mistyped the CVV. All the subsequent ones didn’t get to them. Changing back to my normal Hotels.com account resolved the issue. Tesco Bank later confirmed that there were no other declines (other than the previously mentioned one) and the attempted txn was placed only a few moments after I had booked.

Blocking a card does not usually revoke the pending legit authorisations against the card, otherwise (among other things!) there’d be nothing to stop you filling up at a Pay at Pump and blocking your card to stop the funds from being captured.

        • KevinFlyer says:

I had exactly the same problem, and I replied to the hotels.com email, their reply is: “Thank you for contacting us. The booking was cancelled because it was made using a coupon that was not recognized as legitimately issued by the supplier’s systems. If you have any questions we advise you to reach out to the supplier who provided you with this coupon.

All applicable charges to your credit card have been refunded. For further details regarding these charges, please contact your card issuer. Thank you for your patience and we apologize for any inconvenience.”

I asked them for clarification on what coupon, will see what they reply.

  • Amy says:

Just a thought – has anyone who booked while logged into their hotels.com account and booked a ‘stay’ which has already taken place had reward nights credited? That might be a good indication that the stay has been deemed complete and the points will post…

    • James says:

Yes, I have had a reward night trigger booking a cheap hostel. However, tonight I have had 10 of my bookings cancelled by hotels.com so who knows what happens now.

      • Amy says:

How frustrating! I haven’t booked any yet as my card didn’t arrive on time.

  • Wooty says:

I’ve 3 reward stamps showing from this offer but also had one night cancelled due to me apparently breaching the T&Cs.

    • Tom says:

I have had 2 stamps but the other 25 bookings I made have just been cancelled… Not sure whether to try again, I have emailed them back as requested so will see what they say.

  • Peter Manning says:

Pity it’s with Hotels.com, still haven’t resolved a claim after months of trying, not using them again!

  • Amy says:

I’ve had reward stamps credited for all my stays (four in total) but have had two emails saying my bookings have been cancelled and I am in the queue for a refund.

    • James says:

2 emails saying bookings have been cancelled on completed stays or on other bookings you made?

      • Amy says:

        On two completed stays 🙁

        • James says:

I have had 1500 points come through today to my clubcard account from Tesco Bank… I havent spent on the credit card for anything other than hotels in this promo…
