  • Paul says:

I have yet to find a “black Friday” deal that was worthy of the term deal. In general prices have either been inflated ahead of time or are no better than at other times in the year.
I also dislike the term “ black Friday” as it has connotations with disaster and mishap. Consequently I tend to avoid all such marketing hype.

    • Worksop Dave says:

American garbage. Shame this nonsense has become so big in this country.

    • Crafty says:

The term derives from retailers entering into profit (“the black”) for the year

    • Mr(s) Entitled says:

Black Friday is so named because it was/is reputed to be the day merchants went from the red (debt) to the black (credit) for the year. It’s not negative.

    • Jane says:

I have visited Miami for 20 years to shop on Black Friday. The sales are amazing.
Unlike the UK, most designer stores merely have a sign outside stating 30 or 40% off entire store. This is off standard ticket price. No mark up during year – items are manufactured with a ticket stating price.
Cant go this year due to family illness and did a shop in Harrods for items I would have bought there. On US brands like Ralph the items are charged the same figure as in dollars – thus a £350 price in UK to a $350 dollar price in Miami and then I would have also had an extra 40% off.
People may find our Black Friday rubbish but don’t criticise the American sales – they are great !!

      • Harry T says:

Doesn’t it cost just as much, when you factor in the costs of visiting Miami – flights, hotels etc?

      • Blair says:

Agreed on this; in the US you can treat yourself and also do all your Christmas buying gifts in that one weekend. Without exclusions like we get here. Yes it’s a long way to go but it is a holiday too. I couldn’t make it work with work commitments this year sadly.

    • Bazza says:

What would better for you “white Friday”?

  • Steve says:

I’ve just gone back through all my current bookings to see if I can get better prices with the Black Friday deals. All of the “Black Friday deals” are more expensive than my regular bookings made a few weeks ago…

    • Yuff says:

The hotels, I was looking at, seem to have increased their prices as well
      Hmmm 🤔

      • Worksop Dave says:

Yet there’ll be morons wetting themselves about this nonsense which wasn’t even a thing here until 2015.

        Embarrassing

        • Mr(s) Entitled says:

Having a bad day already Worksop Dave. Care to tell us about it?

If you do not like it do not partake. Rejoice in others paying over the odds and thus subsidising your purchases at other times of the year. But really, just live and let live. What harm does it do?

          • Worksop Dave says:

“ What harm does it do?”

            It irks me.

          • The Savage Squirrel says:

“What harm does it do?” You should see the fistfight I’m going to have about a cheap telly at Asda… 😀

          • Mr(s) Entitled says:

I’ve just picked up a Firestick at Amazon that camelcamelcamel tells me has never been cheaper.

As with everything, it requires a little bit of diligence which I suspect the average HfP reader will apply but the average person would not.

          • Blindman says:

“As with everything, it requires a little bit of diligence which I suspect the average HfP reader will apply but the average person would not.”

I think you may be shocked to find that the average Hpf reader is not that high brow or clever going on the posts that appear here daily.

            Ask your Butler.

          • Rob says:

Most know that highbrow is one word though 🙂

        • ChrisC says:

thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

Would ‘pre christmas sale’ be less irksome?

          • Paul Pogba says:

The pre Christmas sales of old were usually 7-10 days before Christmas Eve when the retailers evaluated what they’d over ordered and desperately tried to sell before they had to offer an even bigger discount on Boxing Day. Black Friday seems to have its origins in trying to capture post Thanks Giving Christmas sales before your competitors. I know many people that defer all November purchases to the end of the month in the hope of securing a discount, it seems to shift behaviour in a way thats not really useful to anyone – retailers lose their Christmas margin, logistics firms have erratic demand and the consumers often end up disappointed/underwhelmed at what materialises.

  • Rich says:

CitizenM Paris is inflated to reach the same price it’s been for the last couple of weeks.

    • ChrisC says:

Yet the one at Schiphol is 30% cheaper now than when I looked a couple of weeks ago for a nights stay next March.

And as these rates are refundable there is nothing to stop you booking and then cancelling if the rate drops later.

  • Mouse says:

Cathay 50% off is economy only sadly

  • John says:

Cathay may not survive the pandemic with more and more restrictions on crew

  • Phil says:

These hotel “deals” are ridiculous. We’re staying at the Venetian in Vegas between Christmas and New Year. Paid about £400 at the end of September and now it’s showing as £700 on Ebookers!

    • Dominic says:

I suspect that is in part due to the US being closed to travellers until recently, so demand was far lower.

This just sounds like a standard supply and demand problem.

    • TGLoyalty says:

You realise prices change in line with demand and the closer you get the more it usually costs for peak dates.

    • Mikeact says:

      Plus resort fees ?

      • TGLoyalty says:

I really don’t understand why people get hung up on these. You’ve been told what it costs. Either pay Or move on to elsewhere.

  • BuildBackBetter says:

For heavy readers, kindle oasis is at its lowest price.

  • David S says:

I looked at the Cathay offer for flights to Bali next Aug. Almost £18K for 2 passengers and a 33 hour journey. No thanks !!

    • Sam G says:

I’d be wary of booking any Cathay flights with connections anyway – I’ve seen reports of people with Bangkok flights being rebooked with 3 day connections in HKG! (not allowed anyway!)
