IHG Rewards has launched a new promotion letting you earn double points on your stays this Spring.
IHG Rewards is the loyalty scheme covering InterContinental, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Crowne Plaza and Hotel Indigo among other brands.

How does IHG’s new ‘2x’ promotion work?
This is how it goes:
- You must register in advance via this link
- You earn 2 x base points on every stay during the promotional period after registration
- The bonus points ARE elite qualifying and count towards status
- Existing bookings count
- You must complete your stays between 1st February and 31st March
Existing bookings DO count so there is no need to rebook anything. Only one room per stay counts towards the offer, so if you are booking multiple rooms you should put each in a different name.
How many points will I earn?
The standard earning rate in IHG Rewards is 10 points per US$1 (73p) excluding taxes. I value an IHG Rewards point at 0.4p although you can often do better, which means your base return is 4p per 73p spent, ie 5.5%.
Under this offer, a member with no IHG status would receive 11.0% back in points. This isn’t bad, of course, but we’ve seen better.
Of course, most HfP readers will have some sort of IHG Rewards status. This comes with a status bonus (applies to base points only):
- 10% bonus for Gold Elite
- 50% bonus for Platinum Elite
- 100% bonus for Spire Elite
This means that a Spire Elite member will be earning 30 points per $1. This is 12p of points for every 73p spent ex-VAT, or a return of 16.4%.
Conclusion
Hotel promotions are thin on the ground at the moment, with only Hilton from the ‘big three’ running a major promotion, worth 2,500 bonus points per stay.
As the Hilton bonus is fixed, this new IHG offer will work out better for longer, expensive stays. If you only need a cheap property for one night, you’d get a better return at a Hampton by Hilton (2,500 bonus points) than an IHG Rewards hotel.
That said, you can’t argue that this IHG Rewards promotion has a lot of things going for it:
- all cash stays count
- you don’t need to rebook existing stays
- you get the bonus from your first stay after registration
