British Airways adds a new day flight from Newark to London Heathrow

British Airways is adding a new, daytime, flight from Newark Liberty airport in New York (well, technically New Jersey) to London Heathrow. This takes the number of daily Newark flights to three.

This is a day flight on the return. Leaving Newark at 7.55am, it lands in Heathrow at 7.10pm.

I know some people who swear by day flights to return from New York. Anyone who has tried to get a sensible amount of sleep on an overnight flight, especially if tail winds knock a chunk off the already short flight time, will know how rough it can make you feel.

New British Airways Newark daytime flight

The downside, of course, is that you ‘lose’ a day. This could have been used to spend more time in New York or to reduce the amount of time off work you need.

Technology makes things easier, of course. With decent onboard wi-fi, it is possible to ‘work from home’ on a day return flight. You’ll also be in far better shape than if you’d gone straight to the office from a 7am arrival in London.

If your time is your own, a day flight home seems a no-brainer as long as you are happy paying for the extra hotel night.

The new service will be operated by a Boeing 777-200. British Airways is promising to run a Club Suite aircraft on the flight, although this can never be 100% guaranteed until the entire Boeing 777 fleet is converted. Our guide to the new ‘it’s got a door!’ Club Suite business class suite is here.

The outbound flight from London departs Heathrow at 7.10pm, arriving in Newark at 10pm. The aircraft will then spend the night at the airport.

The daytime flight from New York’s JFK airport, scheduled to restart in March, will continue alongside this service.

PS. Even if the idea of a day return flight doesn’t appeal, remember that BA will have opened up four Club World seats on this new flight for Avios redemptions every day. If you had been struggling to find New York seats for this Summer, take another look.

Good for customers but I fear it won’t last.
Last time they tried it, it became a 767 and then got killed off.
Looks like a pathetic attempt to hit United who have an 8am departure with the far superior Polaris product.
A shame BA can’t focus on getting the (nowadays) awful quality (food, bad handling and stuff) right before it tries all this.

    • Lady London says:

Do you think it will get killed off then? How long do you think they will keep it in the schedules for, if so.

I still think Concorde was the best thing ever timing-wise for New York.

      • Nick says:

I like the 10am AA departure best of all and wish BA would do similar here. But they’re not brave enough to do that as it would have to stand entirely on P2P traffic and I think they believe they’ll have to rely on evening connections to make up the volume. To me though, that’s why it’s likely to fail.

Credit to BA. I have silver status and they allowed me and 4 guests into lounge on outbound and return. Very friendly.

    • Track says:

That’s because lounges are not at capacity busy (depends which and T5 lounges seems as busy as can be).

  • A says:

This is good thing and I swear by the day flights. I’d only be using this one as a last resort though, like if both VS & BA from JFK had no availability, as EWR from Brooklyn is a bit of a mission, and lets face it, EWR is a hole.

    • Andrew says:

There’s already a day flight from JFK, this is about an additional overall frequency from a capacity perspective and the choice of flying from EWR.

  • Dominic Barrington says:

I’m intrigued by all the positive responses for the daytime option. Personally I find the daytime flights mess me up with regard to jet lag far more than the overnight ones!

    • dougzz99 says:

For me it’s all about arrival time at destination. If it’s a night flight you have to get some sleep as you’ll need to be up all the following day. If it’s a day flight you have to stay awake as you need to sleep once you’re home. Simply about making best effort to adjust to arrival time. People put huge value in CS over CW on BA, but an A350/B787 leaves you far less ‘’lagged’ than older aircraft with poorer pressure/humidity, much more important than seat.

  • Mike wright says:

Please put a caveat that when the Plaza Premium Lounge in LHR T5 is busy they turn away AMEX Plat cardholders; this happened to me on Feb 10. I got in 45 minutes later. It outshines the BA lounges – I had Club ticket and used the 45 minted to check the South Lounge. I would happily help BA lift the quality of its lounges to Plaza Premium level.

  • Mike Wright says:

And turning to the inflight food, it used to be superb on MAN-LHR-MAN. Now it is a cheese croissant. On LHR-PHX in 10 Feb I left most of the first meal – roast beef- and declined the second meal. The staff and the Club with Dolores on the 777-300ER were superb. Again, BA is 95% of the way there and needs someone to lift them the last 5%. I’m offering my services.

  • Mike Wright says:

    *Dolores should be doors
