IHG One Rewards has launched its first promotion since the scheme was rebranded and, as we wrote here, massively improved.
IHG One Rewards is the loyalty scheme covering InterContinental, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Crowne Plaza and Hotel Indigo among other brands.
How does IHG’s new ‘2x, 3x, 4x’ promotion work?
The offer runs from 18th May to 31st August.
You must register in advance via this link. Registration is now open.
You will earn:
- No bonus on your first night during the promo period
- 2x base points on your 2nd to 5th nights
- 3x base points on your 6th to 14th nights
- 4x base points on your 15th and additional nights
In terms of counting ‘nights’, reward nights do not count. This is different from the way that IHG usually counts ‘nights’ in terms of earning elite status or milestone rewards.
Existing bookings DO count so there is no need to rebook anything. Only one room per stay counts towards the offer, so if you are booking multiple rooms you should put each in a different name.
How many points will I earn?
The standard earning rate in IHG Rewards is 10 points per US$1 (80p) excluding taxes. I value an IHG One Rewards point at 0.4p although you can often do better, which means your base return is 4p per 80p spent, ie 5.0%.
Under this offer, a member with no IHG status would receive, from their 2nd night, between 10.0% and 20.0% of their pre-tax spending back in points, although obviously few members will reach the 4x level.
Of course, most HfP readers will have some sort of IHG One Rewards status. This comes with a status bonus (applies to base points only):
- 20% bonus for Silver Elite
- 40% bonus for Gold Elite
- 60% bonus for Platinum Elite
- 100% bonus for Diamond Elite
This means that a Diamond Elite member will be earning between 30 and 50 points per $1 from their 2nd night. After 15 nights, you’d be getting a bonus worth 25% of pre-tax spending. You could see some pretty hefty earning here.
Conclusion
Hotel promotions are thin on the ground at the moment, with only Hilton from the ‘big three’ running a major promotion.
The Hilton offer is arguably better than the IHG offering, since Hilton offers double base points on 1-2 night stays and triple points on 3+ night stays until September. That said, if you do lots of 1-2 night stays then the IHG offer may suit you more.
The fact that your first IHG night after 18th May doesn’t earn a bonus is also frustrating – although I am biased as I have an expensive suite booked for Friday 20th May ….
