IHG One Rewards has launched its first promotion since the scheme was rebranded and, as we wrote here, massively improved.

You need to register here.

IHG One Rewards is the loyalty scheme covering InterContinental, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Crowne Plaza and Hotel Indigo among other brands.

IHG One Rewards promotion

How does IHG’s new ‘2x, 3x, 4x’ promotion work?

The offer runs from 18th May to 31st August.

You must register in advance via this link. Registration is now open.

You will earn:

  • No bonus on your first night during the promo period
  • 2x base points on your 2nd to 5th nights
  • 3x base points on your 6th to 14th nights
  • 4x base points on your 15th and additional nights

In terms of counting ‘nights’, reward nights do not count. This is different from the way that IHG usually counts ‘nights’ in terms of earning elite status or milestone rewards.

Existing bookings DO count so there is no need to rebook anything.  Only one room per stay counts towards the offer, so if you are booking multiple rooms you should put each in a different name.

How many points will I earn?

The standard earning rate in IHG Rewards is 10 points per US$1 (80p) excluding taxes.  I value an IHG One Rewards point at 0.4p although you can often do better, which means your base return is 4p per 80p spent, ie 5.0%.

Under this offer, a member with no IHG status would receive, from their 2nd night, between 10.0% and 20.0% of their pre-tax spending back in points, although obviously few members will reach the 4x level.

Of course, most HfP readers will have some sort of IHG One Rewards status.  This comes with a status bonus (applies to base points only):

  • 20% bonus for Silver Elite
  • 40% bonus for Gold Elite
  • 60% bonus for Platinum Elite
  • 100% bonus for Diamond Elite

This means that a Diamond Elite member will be earning between 30 and 50 points per $1 from their 2nd night.  After 15 nights, you’d be getting a bonus worth 25% of pre-tax spending. You could see some pretty hefty earning here.

Conclusion

Hotel promotions are thin on the ground at the moment, with only Hilton from the ‘big three’ running a major promotion.

The Hilton offer is arguably better than the IHG offering, since Hilton offers double base points on 1-2 night stays and triple points on 3+ night stays until September. That said, if you do lots of 1-2 night stays then the IHG offer may suit you more.

The fact that your first IHG night after 18th May doesn’t earn a bonus is also frustrating – although I am biased as I have an expensive suite booked for Friday 20th May ….

Click here to register for IHG’s new bonus points promotion.  It kicks in for stays from 18th May but you can register today.

Rob do what I’m doing before an expensive heavy earning stay and book a cheap night before – though cheap is relative at the moment!

I do need a LHR hotel anyway before that trip and I’ll switch it to cash rather than points.

    • Rob says:

The maths doesn’t work unless I actually NEED a hotel on the 18th or 19th though. I’m losing £50 or so of points but I can’t book a mattress run for that little.

      • Craig says:

A mattress run also means that your actual 5th night planned becomes the 6th (so more points) and your 14th becomes the 15th. A bit extra for the mattress run calculations…

        • ChrisC says:

I’m running the calculations but my head hurts due to lack of sleep. Still no rush to actually change anything!

But yes if I switch an earlier points booking for cash then an IC 7 night stay will count for 7 not 6 nights for this offer.

Then later I have a points booking for August and a cash booking for December (for the same hotel)

If I swap the two so pay cash in August I’ll save 24k points but will pay about £95 extra

So I need to calculate if the triple points bonus is worth it (because by that stage I’ll be in triple points nights and maybe in quadruple for a couple of nights.

I also then need to factor in if I’d rather have the chance of using the suite upgrade voucher for August rather than December because those can only be used for cash bookings.

This could form the basis of someones thesis!

      • chrism20 says:

That’s one of the benefits of living in the regions. Finding a sub £50 a night room for a mattress run is usually easy to do.

  • Scott says:

Annoying thing about trying to register is, that if you’ve got the app installed on your (Android) phone, clicking on the link in an email or in the app, just opens the app and does not take you to the registration page.
I have to go via a desktop link every time.

    • John says:

Open your email in a browser on your phone

    • CC says:

I was just thinking that myself when I saw the app open after using the link in article, but then the promo appeared at top of the page. Tapped it and it opened promo page to register despite it doesn’t look tappable.

      • PB says:

Clear your default IHG app settings on your phone. Then access the link in the email. You will be prompted ‘browser or app?’ Respond browser ‘just once’ or ‘ask every time’

        • Scott says:

I just forwarded the email to my desktop pc and clicked through the link there.
          Worked fine.

    • ChrisC says:

In the IOS app (and I don’t know if it’s the same as the android) it appears in the offers section and if you click on the offer there the registration page opens already pre populated with your name and membership number

      • Matt says:

It appears in the ‘Offers’ section of the Android app too. That is how I registered for it.

  • Paul says:

Do these bonus points count towards status… now we need to get 120k points year!

  • Matt says:

In case anyone is interested, stayed at IC PL last week on reward night (creation free night) and recognition of diamond elite was rubbish. Last year we got an upgrade to bigger room with great view of Wellington arch and 2 drinks vouchers (good for cocktails). This time, no upgrade (not too bothered about) and the drinks vouchers were limited to only house beer, house wine or a coffee. You got the same voucher whether you were gold, plat or diamond. The staff were adamant on this point. Are they really suddenly going to willingly offer free breakfast next month if they wouldn’t give me a cocktail in April?!

    • John says:

I don’t think any hotel will *willingly* be offering free breakfast where they weren’t already, they will be doing it because they think IHG may impose consequences on them for not following the rules (though IHG may not do anything)

      • Rob says:

IHG will be paying the hotels, or it is netted off vs scrapping welcome gifts for Golds.

It was interesting that IHG was stressing that the ‘better upgrades’ policy was simply them now enforcing rules that already existed. This is IHG saying to hotels via the press ‘you signed up to this, we let you off doing it but now we’re not, don’t expect any payment from us’.

  • Sal says:

In the new ihg app, my free ambassador wkend night is showing again as available (although already redeemed 2 months ago). Has anyone experienced this before and would it maybe work for a second time?

    • Ian says:

And on a similar note, does the voucher stay have to be completed by the expiry date, or just booked?

  • meta says:

I don’t understand the need to post about it…

  • Bill says:

I currently have a stay booked from August 29th – September 2nd. Will I get double points for 2 of my nights? Or does the whole stay need to be completed by August 31st?

  • xcalx says:

I recently stayed in 2 IHG properties in Florida and was told the only welcome gift option were the points, I would have preferred the drink and snack.
