British Airways moving flights from Terminal 3 into Terminal 5 as Iberia and American move out

British Airways is consolidating its Heathrow flights in Terminal 5, with a swathe of routes moving across from Terminal 3.

There is something a little odd about this. The changes are happening quickly – passengers will get just 14 days notice in some cases. It also makes little sense in terms of trying to manage queues and lounge capacity in Terminal 5.

Is British Airways desperately trying to stop its passengers running up huge bills by visiting the superior Cathay Pacific and Qantas lounges in Terminal 3?! Here’s our article on the best airport lounges in Heathrow Terminal 3.

British Airways flights moving from Terminal 3 to Terminal 5

Iberia is moving in the opposite direction. Its Heathrow flights are moving from Terminal 5 to Terminal 3 from the same day. It is strongly rumoured that American Airlines will be doing the same.

This is what is happening with British Airways services:

Long haul:

ALL long haul flights in Heathrow Terminal 3 and moving to Heathrow Terminal 5.

This is effective from 12th July.

This includes routes such as:

  • Accra
  • Austin
  • Barbados
  • Orlando
  • Las Vegas
  • Phoenix
  • São Paulo / Buenos Aires

Short haul:

The following short haul routes are also due to move across to Terminal 5 on 12th July:

  • Algiers
  • Brindisi
  • Bologna
  • Budapest
  • Faro
  • Krakow
  • Ljubljana
  • Marseille
  • Nuremberg
  • Olbia
  • Prague
  • Pisa
  • Split
  • Toulouse
  • Valencia
  • Zagreb

I’m not sure how much is left in Terminal 3, to be honest, although some core routes such as Vienna are staying there. It isn’t clear if any of the routes currently being operated using Finnair aircraft and crew will move to Terminal 5, or if those are staying in Terminal 3.

If you were connecting from a Terminal 3 to Terminal 3 flight, you may need to rebook one of the legs. You will need at least two hours, realistically, to transfer between terminals and to ensure that your baggage makes it across.

  • Willmo says:

So this could potentially turn into a golden opportunity for us that fly to Madrid. We could be at a point where we get the Cathay lounge with an A350 for a 2 hour flight.

    • Yona says:

Exactly what I was thinking. There is even a better combo where you fly economy on the A350 in PE seats booked for free with status and eat in the CX Lounge first.

      • Tom says:

I regularly fly to Madrid for Leisure and based in Helsinki. Won’t miss the BA lounges if I compare them to the HEL, MAD and LHR T3 lounges. It will be the morning AY A350 flight for me followed by a 9hr stopover to fly the A330 to Madrid! :-))

  • ScruttonStreet says:

That feels like a fairly hefty increase in T5 lounge usage on the way. More overcrowding I guess, especially once the schools break up.

  • Sunguy says:

My BA flight that changed to AY operated to/from BUD in late August is still showing in both checkmytrip and BA app as T3 – for me, Im hoping it moves to T5!

    • chrischris2202 says:

My flight to BUD in late Sep got moved to T5 already – I admit I only booked BA from Heathrow because I wanted to grab a drink in the Amex lounge!

  • Lady London says:

Oh dear. Time to make sure my US flights are AA codeshares when I get back to US next.

    • qrfan says:

Indeed. I will be very happy if AA is back to T3 for their JFK flights as a result of this.

      • ChrisC says:

Me as well. I have a AA flight to JFK at the end of the month and won’t be too unhappy about being able to use the QF lounge!

    • Karan says:

Cathay Pacific is going to be a American lounge for the next couple of months . Cathay Pacific hosting them . They even have Amerocan concierge key reps inside lounge .

      • Rhys says:

What’s happening now? They only just reopened the American lounges!

        • ChrisC says:

I don’t think the airside lounge ever reopened other than to act as a ‘guest service centre’ and the One World lounge data base has words to that effect on the AA lounge listing.

          • Rhys says:

Ah ok. I was told it was reopening shortly after my visit earlier this year, and it looked open when I was on my trip to Austin.

I did notice that on the oneworld site but thought that might be out of date, although they’re generally good at updating.

  • Scott says:

Hopefully OTP (Bucharest) stays until after August 😉

  • Catalan says:

It’s an operational move agreed by both BA and American to consolidate flights as much as possible in their respective terminals due to current staffing constraints. Once staff levels are back to acceptable levels both airlines will look to revert to cross terminal operations.

    • qrfan says:

Did AA have “cross terminal operations” before? I thought everything AA was T3 pre-covid?

  • Neo says:

Iberia and AA will operate from T3 only from 12 July. Iberia will be handled by AA. Its fact AA already announced it to their baggage handlers.

  • VINZ says:

Looks like Naples is not moving and who cares about those other lounges in T3, I only use the Centurion lounge!

    • Rhys says:

Because the Centurion lounge isn’t the best one!

      • qrfan says:

Yeah but the one you think is the best isn’t the either 😉

      • SaveECRewards says:

        BA is the best one!

        • Frank says:

You’re joking right?! Give me Cathay’s dim sum followed by the Qantas gin bar any day over BA’s sloppy offering.

    • JDB says:

      You obviously prefer windowless spaces…

    • Harry T says:

This is quite funny, especially if you have access to CX F lounge.

      • VINZ says:

I don’t have access to First Class lounges and I find Centurion amazing – I only get in to have some decent food, drink and leave. Is there a better lounge in T3 for Silver members?

        • Nick says:

Amex has the best cocktails. Makes a pleasant change from the others. I don’t like QF any more, they lost the magic post covid.
