British Airways moving flights from Terminal 3 into Terminal 5 as Iberia and American move out

British Airways is consolidating its Heathrow flights in Terminal 5, with a swathe of routes moving across from Terminal 3.

There is something a little odd about this. The changes are happening quickly – passengers will get just 14 days notice in some cases. It also makes little sense in terms of trying to manage queues and lounge capacity in Terminal 5.

Is British Airways desperately trying to stop its passengers running up huge bills by visiting the superior Cathay Pacific and Qantas lounges in Terminal 3?! Here’s our article on the best airport lounges in Heathrow Terminal 3.

British Airways flights moving from Terminal 3 to Terminal 5

Iberia is moving in the opposite direction. Its Heathrow flights are moving from Terminal 5 to Terminal 3 from the same day. It is strongly rumoured that American Airlines will be doing the same.

This is what is happening with British Airways services:

Long haul:

ALL long haul flights in Heathrow Terminal 3 and moving to Heathrow Terminal 5.

This is effective from 12th July.

This includes routes such as:

  • Accra
  • Austin
  • Barbados
  • Orlando
  • Las Vegas
  • Phoenix
  • São Paulo / Buenos Aires

Short haul:

The following short haul routes are also due to move across to Terminal 5 on 12th July:

  • Algiers
  • Brindisi
  • Bologna
  • Budapest
  • Faro
  • Krakow
  • Ljubljana
  • Marseille
  • Nuremberg
  • Olbia
  • Prague
  • Pisa
  • Split
  • Toulouse
  • Valencia
  • Zagreb

I’m not sure how much is left in Terminal 3, to be honest, although some core routes such as Vienna are staying there. It isn’t clear if any of the routes currently being operated using Finnair aircraft and crew will move to Terminal 5, or if those are staying in Terminal 3.

If you were connecting from a Terminal 3 to Terminal 3 flight, you may need to rebook one of the legs. You will need at least two hours, realistically, to transfer between terminals and to ensure that your baggage makes it across.

It’s all a bit of a yo-yo. I originally booked flights to Austin when we were slotted for T5, then had an email moving us to T3. By the looks of things will be getting another email back to T5! I’m so glad I haven’t yet booked my overnight hotel.

  • Phillip says:

Prague and Budapest are two of the routes currently operated by Finnair so they are evidently moving… whether that means Finnair will continue operating them from T5 or whether they will operate what remains at T3 shall be unveiled in due course no doubt!

    • SamG says:

I’d hazard a guess that everything Finnair would operate out of T3 / remote stands with bussing from T5 as required. They use their own T3 nightstopper to swap out aircraft & presumably some crew and other crew position in/out, it’ll get quite complicated if they have some crewing / flights operated out of T5 gates

    • Alex Sm says:

Is it wet lease or what? I was on the BA flight to WAW a few years ago when a QR aircraft with full crew and catering was used! Much comfier than a BA bare bones frame

  • MilesOnPoint says:

So are Tirana and Vancouver routes being kept at Terminal 3 for now then?

    • Rhys says:

No, ALL longhaul flights are moving into T5

      • MilesOnPoint says:

Sorry Rhys, I didn’t read that sentence in the article properly the first time round, in need of another coffee…

So all long haul =} T5 and selected short haul routes too, the long haul routes listed are just examples, gotcha 👍🏻

    • Hugh says:

Surely Vancouver was always flying from T5? I have an F flight in August and was looking forward to the CCR.

      • MilesOnPoint says:

@ Hugh. No, Vancouver route has been from Terminal 3 for as long as I can remember.

We have relatives on Canadian West coast and flew to visit them from Heathrow T3 to YVR in December 2017.

Had a nice tour of the Cathay & QANTAS lounges before the flight then Club World on the upper deck of the 747 to Vancouver, very civilised.

As an F passenger you will definitely feel the benefit of the move to T5 though with First Wing & CCR. An A380 too, the largest BA F seat. Enjoy 🥂✈️

      • bafan says:

Flew to YVR from T5 last September. I remember being very, very late and traversing T5 B gates to get my flight.

  • LEWIS says:

Sorry to be off topic. My BA flight has been cancelled. BA have rebooked me. However I’ve gone from club to euro travler. Will they still let me use the lounge?

    • Judy says:

Unfortunately not, unless you have BA Silver status or above.

      • meta says:

Remember to claim downgrade compensation post-flight. You are due 75% off the ticket cost for that leg (even for Avios bookings).

        • LEWIS says:

For sure. I’m moreen annoyed a out lounge. And tier points I was going to be silver after this trip now am not sure

          • Thegasman says:

Original Routing Credit (ORC) may sort you out here. I believe, strictly speaking, it’s meant for same day changes due to IRROPS but will generally get it in other circumstances if you ask.

        • Julian T says:

I was downgraded in April. I claimed compensation straight away but still haven’t received any response from BA. What is the best way of doing this? Thank you

    • Londonsteve says:

Were you not given the option of changing to a date when they have availability in Club? It’s outrageous if they can just kick people out of Business without any option to negotiate. It could easily make the difference between people acquiring/retaining status and failing. I’m sure any complaints to this effect would fall on deaf ears: “Thanks for your diligent collection of tier points this year, but owing to our crafty last minute move, you’ve failed to achieve status. Goodbye.” (Sound of toilet bowl flushing away the tier points)

      • LEWIS says:

Maybe if phoned I would have been but was abroad didn’t fancy spending £3 a minute tobget through to them. It was auto rebooked. On app. Don’t know why the app can’t give me a choice of flights.

  • Jack says:

T5 is fully to the rafters most of the time this is a stupid move frankly and judging by how quickly they move them back and forth sure some will move back to T3 soon. T5 does not have the capacity for all these flights

    • Robert says:

It will now that QR have left and American and Iberia are leaving next month.

BA will go back to being the sole occupant of T5 once again.

      • Jack says:

There is not enough gates at peak times to handle the number of flights at T5 even when it was only Ba . Iberia have few flights a day the terminal doesn’t have the capacity , lounges are rammed and the terminal is too full . It’s a odd move indeed

  • Ian says:

Oslo stays in T3. Marvellous news 😊

Because even with the obscene security queues in T3, Cathay Dim Sun and Dan Dan Mian in the F lounge > First Wing + BA F lounge in T5

    • meta says:

Don’t you use Fast Track? At T3 it’s always a breeze no matter what time compared to T5.

      • stevenhp1987 says:

T3 fast track had huge queues last month when we were there.

By the time we got through Cathay lounge stopped serving food 🙁

  • Dev says:

I land on the morning of the 12th from Nairobi… presumably arrive in T5 now?

  • Dave says:

Landed from Vancouver in T5 on Thursday afternoon .Due to flight cancellation we we didn’t leave for Manchester until 23:15 so had 7 hour lay over. The terminal was rammed with passengers. Not a seat to be had in Galleries South,Galleries North hardly any better and so hot it was uncomfortable.Ended up in Satellite B which was ok but the only way we could find to get back to A gates was via the tunnel. Is there another way?Unless BA have arranged for sufficient flights to transfer to T3 it will be chaos.

    • meta says:

Hope you’re claiming delay compensation of £520 per person plus duty of care (meals, food, two phone call/internet)

      • meta says:

Sorry no duty of care as you had lounge access

        • Lady London says:

They are not obliged to use the lounge @Meta even if they might have access. They are perfectly entitled to get themselves a proper meal at the various restaurants in the terminal and would be far more likely to actually get a proper meal.

      • Dave says:

Yes we have already sent in a claim for £520 each.Didn’t claim expenses as we did use the lounge. We had similar problem on way out as Manchester flight was cancelled and we flew down euro traveller the day before as we were going to Seattle on the morning flight(originally a 4pm flight when booked) and didn’t fancy having to get to Manchester for the early flight and despite my protestations weren’t allowed to use the lounge in Manchester. Was told if Manchester BA lounge had still been open we spoil probably been allowed in.

    • john says:

      Tunnel is correct method.

      • Dave says:

Thanks for that .Nearly took the shuttle to satellite c ,now that would have been a disaster

    • Robert says:

QR have left and American and Iberia are leaving on 12th July.
