Hotel Indigo Birmingham rebrands

Regular readers may remember that Rhys reviewed the Hotel Indigo in Birmingham in April.

He was, it is fair to say, a little confused. Whilst most Hotel Indigo properties take root in a converted historic building, Birmingham was on two floors of the modern ‘Cube’ development.

The hotel also had virtually no facilities apart from its restaurant.

Hotel Indigo Birmingham closed

There is no gym, pool or lobby lounge area and Rhys felt it was more like a serviced apartment than a hotel. The hotel originally had access to a commercial gym in the same building but this closed during the pandemic.

It seems that IHG and/or the owners decided that it was best for everyone if the plug was pulled. It has now been rebranded as the Cube Hotel and is not linked to IHG or indeed any major brand.

If you are still interested in staying there because of the location or because you liked the Indigo decor, you are best to book via this page of Hotels.com and pick up Hotels.com Rewards stamps for your stay.

Hi Rob. I had hoped to visit the Plaza Premium lounge at EDI in a couple of weeks time using DragonPass and noticed on the app that DragonPass only have two lounges available, the Aspire at Gate 4 and Gate 16. I take it this has still to be updated and that DragonPass will be accepted at the door?

Semi off topic… was in FRA yesterday and was very pleasantly surprised by the Plaza Premium lounge. I think it might have rebranded recently, because it doesn’t look brand new and Google/Apple Maps show it as ‘Sky Lounge’. Got in free using Amex Platinum – the friendly staff were able to swipe my card and confirm that it was free for me and the first guest. Beware it currently closes at 2pm, though.

It’s 100m up the corridor from the JAL Sakura lounge, and is much bigger. It was also completely empty, with huge comfortable armchairs, while Sakura was quite crowded with only dining table seats available. Plaza Premium didn’t appear to have any hot food, but had large high quality wraps and sandwiches (identical to the ones on offer in the JAL lounge), and fresh pretzels (none of those in JAL). There are no unusual offerings or features, but it was bright, spacious and quiet, making it hard to beat as a place to wait for a flight.

I stayed at the Birmingham Indigo about 3 years ago and it was as you stated. The common area is really just a crowded, noisy restaurant and otherwise you are either in your room or outside the hotel.

It is also right on the busy inner ring road which isn’t ideal.

The nearby Hyatt is a much better bet.

I’d rather stay at the Crowne Plaza instead of the Indigo, usually cheaper too. Ugly as hell from the outside tho

I am not locked into IHG luckily. But neither Hilton nor Marriott have a high-end property in Brum.

Haven’t checked out the Grand yet, which was good enough for Tom Cruise.

I am in EDI next week and should be finished with work by mid afternoon so will head straight to the airport and check this out instead of trying to find an empty decent restaurant in town during the Fringe. I’ll try and take some pictures and send them in if someone hasn’t already by then!
