Changes to the British Airways overnight bag drop rules

Since late 2019, British Airways has offered an ‘overnight bag drop’ service at Heathrow, letting you drop your bags off the day before you fly. Gatwick and Edinburgh have had the feature for some time, although it isn’t clear if Edinburgh is currently open.

In many ways it is a win-win service: passengers can travel lighter the next day and can head straight through security, whilst British Airways can shift some of the check-in and baggage drop volumes to its quieter afternoons and evenings.

Fortunately, overnight bag drop weathered the pandemic, and British Airways is now tweaking the service slightly.

The service is now available from both Terminal 3 and 5. The number of eligible flights has been reduced – your flight must now depart before 10am the following morning – but the drop window has extended to between 4pm and 10pm the day before.

At Gatwick, overnight bag drop remains available from 6pm until 9pm for flights until 1pm the following day.

In addition, British Airways will now let you drop bags for other people on your booking, even if they are not present, so long as you have their documents and passport. This means that one person from your party could handle the bag drop for all passengers, which makes life a little bit easier. This has been standard policy for other airlines for some time.
