(DEAD) CRAZY IHG OFFER: free Diamond status until 31st December, shows instantly

UPDATE – APRIL 2024:  This article is now out of date, but don’t worry.  We produce a monthly summary of the top hotel bonus point offers – please click HERE or use the ‘Hotel Offers’ menu above.  Thank you.

Keep up to date with new hotel offers by signing up for our free daily or weekly newsletters.

Well, this is potentially one of the craziest hotel loyalty offers that we have ever seen.

We are used to seeing ‘status challenges’ – where a hotel group will temporarily match your status in another programme for a short period – but this usually requires you to already be top tier elsewhere. This is also usually only offered to status levels with no real tangible benefits.

This is different.

EDIT: This deal is no longer working, unsurprisingly! Let’s see if IHG allows those who signed up to keep their status for the 10 remaining weeks of 2022.

IHG One Rewards instant Diamond upgrade

IHG One Rewards is offering an INSTANT upgrade to its top-tier, Diamond Elite.

Click this link, type in your membership number and you’ll be upgraded. That’s all you need to do. You’ll receive this by email:

and five minutes later:

The upgrade lasts until 31st December 2022.

Diamond Elite benefits include eligibility for suite upgrades and free breakfast. Free breakfast applies at all brands, and includes reward stays. Diamond Elite does not include lounge access, where available.

You will retain your Diamond Elite status for 2023 if you complete 10 cash nights between now and the end of the year.

The only caveat I have is that I don’t know where this offer originated. A few non-UK frequent flyer sites have posted it. There is no ‘puff’ page apart from this registration link. It could be aimed at specific groups or employees of certain companies. The comments suggest that this is somehow linked to Amazon although no-one has found a link to confirm this.

However, whilst there is a caveat emptor to this, in reality the worst that could happen is that IHG downgrades you back to your original status level. Be wary of making pre-paid IHG bookings purely because you will receive Diamond benefits. My gut feeling is that IHG may ride it out, given that the status only lasts for 10 weeks.

I should, however, highlight the official notice on the registration page:

Many offers are only available to IHG One Rewards Club members who receive a specific, targeted communication from IHG. Successful registration does not guarantee that you will receive the points or miles offered when the offer requirements are met if you are not eligible per the offer terms and conditions. Six Continents Hotels, Inc.(SCH) and its subsidiaries and affiliates which are InterContinental Hotels Group companies (collectively IHG) reserve the right to cancel any IHG One Rewards Club membership and revoke any and all unredeemed IHG One Rewards Club points for fraud or abuse of any portion of the program per the IHG One Rewards Club membership terms and conditions.

Seems to have been pulled. The “promotion code” is (was?) 70027, but now shows as invalid.

  • BJ says:

    @Rui N, ok ok, maybe 100k tops 🙂

  • Chris says:

    not working

  • Swifty says:

It’s been on at least 7 different Blogs today from 5am. That’s a lot of bookings for IHG before Christmas 🎄

  • Manya says:

I wasn’t able to upgrade but it looks like I have automatically been upgraded to platinum elite until end of this year.

Aside from maybe any link with my Amex platinum I’m not sure why I would be deserving of the bump up in status. Not stayed in IHG hotels for over two years now.

  • meta says:

Yes, if you want your account shut.

  • Track says:

I am sure IHG were reading this chat threat because now there is a warning (not present before):

“Successful registration does not guarantee that you will receive the points or miles offered when the offer requirements are met if you are not eligible per the offer terms and conditions.”

This is where IHG toppled themselves. So, successful registration means nothing?

How about successful purchase of a lottery ticket, or successful deposit into your bank account? No guarantees you get the prize even if you won (to get interest you earned as advertised by a bank).

This is at the point where it becomes easier to see the bad faith on the part of the company doing the above.

    • Roy says:

Yup, that’s how lottery tickets work. If you somehow manage to buy a lottery ticket without meeting the legal requirements (e.g. under the minimum age) and then match the winning numbers, then when you come to claim you’ll find you haven’t actually won anything because your entry is deemed invalid.

      • Track says:

@Roy, Dont pick up on this. I iterated _successful purchase_
Until about last year 16 years old was qualifying to purchase lottery tickets. Under 16 yo, you are not supposed to have a non-basic account debit card.

Banks block gambling transactions for basic/under 16 yo accounts. And basic accounts are for those with bad credit. This is an example of at least a rule/check in place, rather than turning around saying ‘ineligible’.

    • Rui N. says:

There’s plenty of instances where you wouldn’t be eligible for the prize of that lottery ticket. Same is true for that bank account – you should read what happened to people that opened a Creation card last year after having the first one closed… in general, you do indeed need to read a lot about how the world works.

      • Ian says:

What did happen to the Creation people who opened another account?

        • Rui N. says:

The account got closed and they didn’t get any points for their spending nor did they get the spending bonus.

          • Rui N. says:

(The sign up bonus, I meant)

          • NorthernLass says:

Well they couldn’t get any points if the account was closed, surely?
But the only case I’ve ever seen is someone who kept booking points & cash rooms then cancelling to get tons of cheap points refunded.

          • Rui N. says:

What are you on about NorthernLass?! This particular conversation is about Creation, not about IHG.

          • Rui N. says:

To be clearer, I’m talking about the people that got their Creation IHG cards cancelled last year, and right after receiving the cancellation letter signed up for a new one. Creation ended up closing those and didn’t award any points/SUBs for the (short) time they were open.
This was just to show Track that because you managed to open an account, doesn’t mean you’ll get anything out of it.

          • Track says:

And that was exactly the actions befitting a rogue credit card operator, reneging on written contract and their own terms.

If Creation accepted a credit card application and opened a card — it does not matter if its 2nd, 3rd or Nth card.

Creation did not even bother to write explicitly “people who receive the opening bonus before are not eligible” — if that is what they/their rules intended.

  • Scott says:

I registered for this yesterday even though I’m Diamond already.
Not sure if it will work, but nothing ventured, nothing gained.
