Hilton news: why it has the best hotel promo for January, Hampton Exeter Airport shuts

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

In the first few days of every month, we publish a long article listing all of the current hotel promotions and suggesting which ones are worth looking at.

This month, we haven’t.

The reason is very simple. There is only one global promotion currently running from the ‘big six’ hotel chains, and this is from Hilton Honors.

Let’s run over the Hilton offer again for completeness.

The Hilton Honors Spring promotion is open for registration here.

The promotion is called ”Double Up & Explore’. There are TWO ways to earn a bonus, and they work together.

  • You will earn DOUBLE Hilton Honors base points for every stay between 1st January and 30th April.
  • In addition, you will earn 1,000 bonus Hilton Honors points for every stay at a different Hilton brand.

There is NO ‘starting with your second stay’ rule.  You get double points from your first stay during the promotional period. You also earn the 1,000 points ‘brand bonus’ from your first stay.

For most brands, you will earn 10 base points per $1 spent, plus an additional 10 promotional points plus any status bonus.

Given that I value a Hilton Honors point at around 0.33p, you are getting a good return on your pre-tax spending here.  20 points per $1 is an 8% rebate and that is before you add in any status bonus. A Diamond would be getting 12% back.

You can add in a flat £3.33 of value per new brand from the 1,000 points ‘brand bonus’ too.

You can sign up for ‘Double Up & Explore’ here. There aren’t any better options at the moment!

And talking of Hilton ….

Hampton by Hilton Exeter Airport closes for 12 months

Hampton by Hilton Exeter Airport closes for 12 months

The Hampton by Hilton hotel at Exeter Airport, which we reviewed here, is the latest property to turn itself over to the Government to house asylum seekers.

The hotel has agreed a 12 month contract from today. Once completed, it will finish the refurbishment which was already underway before reopening in Spring 2024.

If you’re planning a trip to Exeter you have two new branded hotels options – the Hotel Indigo in the city centre and Marriott’s Courtyard which is next to the rugby stadium.

If I book the Flight + Car package, but don’t go to collect the car – will BA know, and cancel my return / not honour double TPs etc?

    • JDB says:

Nobody can give you a definitive answer to this as it may depend on the car location and how they treat your ‘no show’ / cancellation of the element that turned a flight into a package. If they were good enough to refund BA, that might complicate things further. As ever, if you stick to the terms you will be fine, otherwise you will have to wait until afterwards to find out.

IHG are running a promotion (for me anyway!). Stay 2 nights, earn 3000 pts, and so on.

    • Rob says:

      Targetted!

      • WaynedP says:

I’ve got an “earn 3k bonus pts for every 2nt stay, up to max 9k for 6nts, book & stay by 8 Feb 23” offer from IHG.

Must also be targetted, which I hadn’t realised.

  • SammyJ says:

Do you know whether a BA flight booking with a car or hotel added before checkout (initiated from the flight only page) counts as a ‘holiday’ for the TP promo? The checkout page refers to it as a BA Package holiday, but there’s no deposit option as you’d get if you initiated the search from the regular BA Holidays pages. The question was asked on the TLFL Facebook page a few days ago, and there was some debate about it, with nobody actually being sure of the answer. BA haven’t answered either.

    • AJA says:

The T&Cs say that the car /hotel must be booked at the same time as the flight, i.e., you can’t subsequently add a car or hotel to turn it into a holiday to count for the double TP.

So, as long as you do so and pay for everything together, I’d say it should count.

Also, do you get an ATOL certificate covering your booking when you book that way? If you do, I’d say that it should count, but BA IT being what it is, I would err on the side of caution and expect it not to count.

Does it make a difference to the price of the booking if you do it that way rather than starting from the usual holidays pages?

    • JDB says:

I think that if you read the terms carefully, it is very clear that you must book the flights via BA Holidays not just on BA, then adding hotel/car even in the same transaction.

When you simply add a hotel or car etc. to a flight, it technically changes the legal nature of the product to a ‘linked travel arrangement’ but that does not make it a BA Holidays package eligible for the double TP promotion.

      • ayearinmx says:

I have booked trips, using the flights, and then tacking the hotels/rental car on top when given the option after selecting flights and been given the double TP and Avios.

i do this because my expiry date always seems to fall in the middle of a trip, so I book one leg business, one leg economy… which seems impossible on the BAH system

    • JosephH says:

It looks to me like it will work; I had to start from a flight only search as I wanted to fly different classes outbound (and I find that path better for picking the exact flights I want anyway), and added a hotel after I’d picked flights – on the ‘passengers’ part of the checkout process I got a clear red message saying:

‘Executive club members earn Double Tier Points’

(I didn’t get the option to pay only a deposit, but given I’m flying in just over 2 weeks time that wasn’t expected anyway. And to confirm I booked both together, making a single payment for flights+hotel, and received an ATOL certificate.)

  • AirMax says:

Considering they’ve hiked even the humble Hampton Croydon to 25,000 points, 1,000 is nothing.

(Compare this to IHG Accelerate where you would consider changing your plans to tick off the different brands)

  • Angelamc11 says:

Anybody know when the points for the Marriott promo, for staying at different brands in December is likely to post?

  • Chrisdf says:

Does anyone have any experience of using Emirates/Marriott world rewards?

I’ve got no status with Emirates but Plat Marriot, so I should get priority check-in and priority boarding. I’ve linked the accounts but have nothing to show (no indication on app etc) at the airport I have such benefits (other than my linked skywards added to my flight).

Can a family group (2A+2C) use the priority check in on same booking?

  • Venturelog says:

Has anyone had recent experience of using eVouchers for BA holidays? Can they only be used by calling them?

    • Niall says:

The forum is your friend here where there are already threads on this. You can email BA holidays to apply up to 4 evouchers for a booking.

  • Richard says:

Can you use Avios to lower the price of a BA holiday and still qualify for the double tier points?
