Review: the Qatar Airways Gold lounge (for BA Silver) at Doha’s Hamad Airport

Late last year, Qatar Airways opened three new lounges at its home at Doha’s Hamad International Airport.

Two of the three lounges are open to elite members of the oneworld airline alliance, with the third reserved exclusively for the lowest tier of Qatar Airways elite members.

They can be used by elites who are flying Qatar Airways or another oneworld airline in Economy or on a ‘no lounge access’ Business Light cash ticket.

There are three new lounges:

  • Qatar Airways Platinum Lounge, open to oneworld Emerald members (including British Airways Gold), with 140 seats
  • Qatar Airways Gold Lounge, open to oneworld Sapphire members (including British Airways Silver), with 85 seats
  • Qatar Airways Silver Lounge, open to Qatar Airways Silver members ONLY (oneworld Ruby, including British Airways Bronze, cannot enter), with 195 seats

We reviewed the Qatar Airways Platinum Lounge last week – click here. Whilst I also saw the Silver lounge, I won’t write about it as only a handful of our readers would qualify for entry.

Inside the Qatar Airways Gold Lounge

This article is an overview of the Qatar Airways Gold Lounge. This is based on a guided tour I was given when in the airport in February. I spent less than 10 minutes there – I had five lounges to see! – so please forgive the superficiality.

As the smallest of the three new lounges, by far, there is less to show here. This may be an issue – logically the British Airways Silver equivalent lounge should be bigger than the Gold equivalent lounge, not almost half the size!

I was there during a lull in the ‘banks’ of flights which head out from Doha so these photos don’t give a fair impression of how busy it will be if you there in the 1-2 hours before a flight bank departs.

Basically you have a large oblong space with a variety of seating types. There are burnt orange sofa chairs:

and

… and on the other side, behind smart wooden lattice, you have some brown sofa chairs:

At the top end are some dining tables:

…. where you can help yourself from the breakfast buffet:

Hot items during the time I was there (breakfast) were plain omelette (self serve), potato wedges and a creamy mushroom stew. Congee was also available, as were cut fruit plates.

A well stocked bar is also available:

The Qatar Airways Gold Lounge clearly doesn’t have the scale, the architectural investment or the waiter service dining of the Platinum lounge.

That said, if you are a British Airways Executive Club Silver member flying on an Economy Qatar Airways or other oneworld ticket (or on a Business Light ‘no lounge’ cash ticket) then this is a more than acceptable place to spend time. It will make your Doha stopover far more palatable if you have no interest in hitting the shops.

  • Paul says:

I was here last week during the midnight bank and it was completely full. It’s far too small a space

  • Aaron says:

Its a nice lounge other than when full – though to be fair as a solo traveller during peak times they have often upgraded us to the platinum lounge as it shares the same entrance

  • Smid says:

Is there champagne? Not mentioning whether there is or isn’t is a basic failure in reviewing an airport status lounge.

    • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

To be fair to @Rob this is more of a drive by look see rather than a full review.

The choice seemed to be this drive by or nothing at all about this lounge.

Most people would prefer the former I think.

    • Dr Knorke says:

See my comment from a bit earlier – yes, there is champagne (served from the bar).

      • Smid says:

Ta. Will perhaps take one of those cheap QR fares if they reappear, because will end up in this lounge when gold expires in September.

    • StanTheMan says:

So very very very basic ! My goodness.

      • babyg says:

its a lot better than some of the European lounges about (he says from the FARO lounge which is far more “basic”)…

  • Chris says:

All spot on Rob. Only thing I would add is that it can be a bit of a schlep to find it, depending on where you disembark in the first place. Its just inside Zone A on the right as you approach form the central hub. It’s certainly a better prospect for a spot of F and B than the grim and overpriced offerings at this airport generally.

  • Mike says:

I like the comic stylings of Qatar, with a platinum lounge for golds and a gold lounge for silver.

However, as a Britisher I think comedy can always be done better. Call the Concorde Room the Gold lounge, rename Galleries First the Silver lounge as it for golds and rename the other lounges the bronze lounge as it’s for silvers (and business). The comedy party is bronze holders would go the the bronze lounge and go told to do one, comedy gold…

    • Mike says:

BA is the one with comedic stylings here – it’s pretty much the only oneworld airline to have emerald status as gold and sapphire as silver. Most other airlines have emerald as platinum and sapphire as gold.

  • John says:

In Doha currently and being a ba silver card holder trying to find the gold lounge. Lunacy to say the least. Tell anyone you are a silver card holder and they send you to the silver lounge at B1 which you don’t get access to. Gold lounge is at A1.
