Review: the Qatar Airways Platinum lounge (for BA Gold) at Doha’s Hamad Airport

Late last year, Qatar Airways opened three new lounges at its home base, Doha’s Hamad International Airport.

Two of the three lounges are open to elite members of the oneworld airline alliance, with the third reserved exclusively for the lowest tier of Qatar Airways elite members.

They can be used by elites who are flying Qatar Airways or another oneworld airline in Economy or on a ‘no lounge access’ Business Light cash ticket.

There are three new lounges:

  • Qatar Airways Platinum Lounge, reviewed in this article, open to oneworld Emerald members (including British Airways Gold), with 140 seats
  • Qatar Airways Silver Lounge, open to Qatar Airways Silver members ONLY (oneworld Ruby, including British Airways Bronze, cannot enter), with 195 seats

Inside the Qatar Airways Platinum Lounge

This article is an overview of the Qatar Airways Platinum Lounge. This is based on a guided tour I was given when in the airport in February. I spent less than 10 minutes there – I had five lounges to see! – so please forgive the superficiality.

A second article here covers the Qatar Airways Gold Lounge. Whilst I also saw the Silver lounge, I won’t write about it as it only accepts Qatar Privilege Club Silver members.

The key features of the Platinum Lounge are:

  • there is waiter service dining available all day
  • it is architecturally the most impressive space of the three new lounges
  • high end showers and a relaxation quiet area are available

There are two zones. As you enter, you have this – admittedly fairly functional-looking – dining area:

This is full waiter service dining, with even breakfast being a multi-course affair if that’s what you want. You need to scan a QR code to access the menu but ordering is done via a real person.

If you don’t want to eat from the menu there are also buffet items laid out:

(Note that I wasn’t on a private tour despite the lack of people in the photos – I was there during a lull in the ‘banks’ of flights which head out from Doha. A lot of flights land, a couple of hours later a lot of flights take off, there is a lull, a lot of flights land etc etc …. 24/7.)

Walk down the corridor and the lounge opens up into a large open plan area with a dramatic sloping ceiling:

…. with a smart bar:

High quality showers are available if needed (banish all thoughts of the British Airways lounge showers at Heathrow):

…. and there is a relaxation / quiet area if you need it:

Whilst I didn’t have time to try it, having looked at the menu I would put this lounge on a par with the Cathay Pacific First Class lounge at Heathrow Terminal 3 in terms of food. (The Cathay Pacific First Class lounge at Heathrow, reviewed here, is also open to oneworld Emerald / British Airways Gold flyers.)

If you don’t have access to the ‘official’ Qatar Airways business class lounges due to your cash ticket being too cheap (all Avios business class tickets get you into the ‘official’ Al Mourjan lounge) or if you are flying in economy, this is a more than adequate replacement.

Later this week I’ll look at the Qatar Airways Gold Lounge, open to British Airways Executive Club Silver members who are flying in Economy or are on ‘Business Light’ cash tickets.

Full details of all Qatar Airways lounges can be found on this page of its website.

Hamad needs lounges on its gate buses, those things take an hour

  • Jim says:

I have just been to the lounge yesterday and 2 other times since it’s opened – the qr codes have never worked for me (also am I the only one who finds it incredibly irritating to connect to HIA’s wifi? first world problems I know) and one poorly trained staff kept saying it was my wifi connection that was the problem, told me to go back to reception to sort it out. Even though all my other apps were working fine. This is seriously where I am thinking – qr codes are nice and all but give me physical menus back!!! Or at least have one on hand??

    • Jim says:

To give another staff credit, one other staff saw what was happening and as I was about to give up and head to reception, intercepted me, and showed me a the menu on the staff lounge pad. The original staff said there were only 2 things on the menu but there were loads more. However, food was delicious. Chicken briyani was really good. Sushi – might have given me food poisoning as I arrived back in London feeling queasy for more than 24 hours now.

Long-haul international travel has many, many issues, but one of the most aggravating things has to be “using” HIA WiFi…..

    • HAN says:

I’ve been there three times, wifi never works lol

  • Robert says:

I’m trying to book Qatar flights using Avios but not having any luck, do I need to sign up to Privilege Club and transfer my Avios across from BAEC, then try and make the booking on Qatar website, or is there a simpler way to do it on BA website that I’m missing? Thanks in advance for any advice making QR redemption bookings. Also, is it the same amount of Avios required as BA flights?

    • Rob says:

Same Avios, same taxes, on both sites.

      Except:
*availability does not match perfectly – it is meant to, but doesn’t. Oddly the BA site can show Qatar flights that Qatar doesn’t, and they are bookable (I’ve done it)
*Qatar has extra availability if you pay double Avios (flights marked ‘Q2’). These are usually terrible value but sometimes you can swallow it if that is a short haul leg, eg UK to Dubai via Doha, paying double for Doha to Dubai won’t break the bank if that’s what it takes to get a seat

      • Lee says:

Also you could mix the cabin booking through Privilege Club but not on BA

      • Robert says:

Thanks, I’ll keep searching, so far results have only shown BA flights, even when I search EDI to Doha it shows flights going via LHR, or if I search London to Doha I only get the BA flight from LGW. I have been searching around Christmas dates so it is possible they’ve all been snapped up, even with the new type of voucher that opens up more seats.

  • Ross says:

Before the World Cup BA gold card members had access to the 1st class lounge at Hamad Airport, that is not the case any more and the new lounge is noisy at the best of times as it sits just above the loading / baggage area, the choice of food is limited and the space quite small, I don’t know why the change because the 1st class lounge was never too busy, but maybe I was there at the quieter times – Not impressed at all by Qatar Airways, as I had hoped that this was a temporary decision during the World Cup but that does not seem to be the case
