Amex suspends applications for the British Airways Accelerating Business credit card

In late February, the British Airways On Business website went down. Six weeks later, it is still down.

Even by the standards on British Airways IT, this is quite an achievement.

If you’re not familiar with it, On Business is the other British Airways loyalty programme. Instead of rewarding flyers, it rewards your company when you travel.

Amex suspends applications for the British Airways Accelerating Business credit card

It is fundamentally the same as Avios in structure. You earn On Business Points for every flight your company books. They can then be redeemed for flights or for upgrades.

You can collect both Avios and On Business Points on the same flight. You collect Avios as a flyer and On Business Points as a company.

There is a credit card linked to British Airways On Business – the British Airways Accelerating Business credit card, reviewed here.

It’s not a bad product:

  • You receive an impressive bonus of 30,000 Avios when you spend £5,000 in your first three months
  • You earn 1.5 Avios for every £1 you spend
  • You earn 100% more On Business points for every £1 you spend with British Airways using the card.  For most small businesses, this means you will receive an extra 1 On Business points per £1, ie 2 per £1 spent vs the standard 1 point per £1 spent.

Unfortunately the problems with the British Airways On Business website mean that American Express has withdrawn the Accelerating Business credit card to new applicants.

This is meant to be a temporary measure. However, you have to assume that British Airways has told Amex that On Business will not be back in action for some time. It is also possible that BA decides to pull the plug entirely – perhaps it already has, since even in BA-land it is hard to see how a crashed website can take six weeks to fix.

@Rob, you said the trigger is 30k for the bonus 100% points, however, I have the bonus 100% purchase at triggered 5000 points – is it different for different people, then?

  • ianM says:

Nice…need to top up my IHG balance after spending 200k on 11 nights in Crowne Plazas and Holiday Inns in Georgia – fantastic value compared to paying cash – or indeed using Hilton, esp as Diamond with free breakfasts.

Even without the recent 15% off promo which was the icing on top.

  • Tony says:

Is that 15% off promo still running?

  • RussellH says:

Re Mr+Mrs Smith – we need a stopover en route to Cornwall next month.
    Looked on IHG for Taunton.
Holiday inn in a retail park for 24K points, or Mr+Mrs Smith Inn in pretty village for 25K.
    easy choice!

  • VALittleRed says:

It’s a shame you can’t use additional IHG points on a redemption to include a breakfast rate if you’re not a diamond.

  • VinZ says:

Oh gosh, I hope they don’t pull the plug…! I love OB… have applications for the corporate accelerating cards been suspended too?

When I spoke to a CS rep last week she said the website should be back in action mid April. Why would they extend the point validity if they’re planning to kill the scheme?

    • memesweeper says:

… they might kill it for earning but allow existing points to be redeemed.
