Barclaycard has brought back its astonishing sign-up deal on its new Barclaycard Avios Plus Mastercard.

You have just a week left. If you apply by 30th May via this link you will receive 50,000 Avios when you spend £3,000 within three months.

This is an unparalleled deal, especially when you remember that the monthly fee for the card is just £20 and that you cancel at any time.

In the very worst case scenario, assuming you can’t get the flight redemptions you want, you could turn your 50,000 Avios into £333 of Nectar points. That’s not a bad sign-up bonus at all …..

Barclaycard Avios

If you don’t want to pay any fee at all, there is also a special offer of 10,000 Avios on the free Barclaycard Avios Mastercard.

However, I genuinely don’t recommend getting the free card with 10,000 Avios if you believe that you can spend £3,000 in three months to earn 50,000 Avios on the paid card.

Had the card before? If you have previously cancelled a Barclaycard Avios credit card, you cannot get the bonus again without a 24 month gap. As the cards are only 14 months old, no-one is yet in this position. You are welcome to reapply after a six month gap but you will not receive any bonus.

Had any other Barclaycard before? You are welcome to apply if you cancelled your non-Avios Barclaycard more than six months ago. You will receive the bonus.

The new Barclaycard Avios Mastercard credit cards are impressive

These two credit cards cards, launched in 2022, should fundamentally change your Avios collecting strategy if you are based in the UK.

They are, easily, the most rewarding non-Amex travel credit cards on the market and arguably the most valuable Visa or Mastercard credit cards in the UK of any sort. Whilst Barclaycard would love you to swap your Amex card for its Mastercard, there is nothing to stop you running both cards side by side.

Irrespective of what Visa or Mastercard you are currently using alongside your British Airways American Express card, you should find that these two new cards are better.

I think the cards offer you more than the Virgin Atlantic Reward credit cards, and those were already head and shoulders (in my view) above all other UK Visa and Mastercard products.

Unfortunately, existing Barclaycard holders – which includes the old Hilton Honors card – cannot apply as you are restricted to one Barclaycard credit card at a time. Some cardholders, but not Hilton ones, are being targetted with a switching bonus via the Barclaycard app if you want to give up your existing product. If you choose to cancel your existing card you will need to wait six months before making a fresh application.

The application page for Barclaycard Avios Plus credit card (now 50,000 Avios) is here.

The application page for the free Barclaycard Avios credit card (now 10,000 Avios) is here.

There are TWO Barclaycard Avios credit cards

I will run over the benefits of both of the Barclaycard Avios cards below. The bottom line, however, is that I recommend getting the paid card because of the huge 50,000 Avios sign-up bonus. You can always trade down to the free card later.

Let’s summarise the two Barclaycard Avios credit cards:

50000 Avios with Barclaycard Avios Plus credit card

The free card: Barclaycard Avios Mastercard

The representative APR is 29.9% variable.

The benefits are:

  • A sign-up bonus for new Barclaycard customers of 10,000 Avios if you spend £1,000 in three months – this is a special offer until 30th May 2023
  • You earn 1 Avios per £1 spent
  • No annual fee
  • You earn a British Airways cabin upgrade voucher if you spend £20,000 in a card year

You can apply here.

50000 Avios with Barclaycard Avios Plus credit card

The paid card: Barclaycard Avios Plus Mastercard

The representative APR is 80.1% APR variable, including the annual fee.  The representative APR on purchases is 29.9% variable.

The benefits are:

  • A sign-up bonus for new Barclaycard customers of an astonishing 50,000 Avios if you spend £3,000 in three months – this is a special offer which runs to 30th May 2023
  • You earn 1.5 Avios per £1 spent
  • You earn a British Airways cabin upgrade voucher if you spend £10,000 in a card year
  • You receive discounted access (£18.50) to airport lounges via DragonPass

There is a £20 per month fee (reduced to £15 for customers who hold Barclays Avios Rewards via a Barclays Premier current account via a £5 monthly cashback credit)

You can apply here.

Note that the fee is paid monthly and you can cancel at any point. You may also be offered the chance to downgrade to the free card via the Barclaycard app, but this is not guaranteed.

Summary

This is an amazing deal. The ability to pick to 50,000 Avios – worth £333 of Nectar points even if you use them in the least rewarding way! – from a £20 per month credit card is exceptionally generous.

Even if you don’t / can’t apply yourself, how about someone else in your Household Account?

There is also a lot of long term value in these cards:

An earnings rate which blows all other Visa or Mastercard products out of the water:

You honestly couldn’t ask for more from a non-Amex credit card. The earning rate of 1 Avios per £1 (free card) or 1.5 Avios per £1 (fee card) blows all of the competition out of the water. If you value an Avios at 1p, which we do in our articles, then you’d be getting an effective 1% to 1.5% return on your spending. This is 400%-500% more than your typical cashback Visa or Mastercard.

An annual British Airways upgrade voucher if you hit your spending target:

On top of an outstanding earn rate, you can earn a valuable annual cabin upgrade voucher for an Avios reward flight booking on British Airways. We will look at this in detail in another article this week, but this can easily save you 50,000+ Avios on a typical redemption.

A big sign-up bonus which most HfP readers will qualify for:

For total clarity, you qualify for the bonus on these cards even if you have a British Airways American Express card. The only bonus rules are:

  • anyone who currently has any Barclaycard, including the Hilton Honors one, or has had one in the last six months cannot apply at all
  • anyone who had a Barclaycard Avios Mastercard within the last 24 months, but more than six months ago, can apply but will not receive a bonus

My personal view is that you should apply for the £20 per month Barclaycard Avios Plus credit card. This gets you:

  • the 50,000 Avios bonus for spending £3,000 in three months (for applications by 30th May)
  • the higher earning rate and
  • the reduced £10,000 target for earning a cabin upgrade voucher

How to apply

You can apply for the free Barclaycard Avios credit card (10,000 Avios bonus until 30th May) here.

You can apply for the Barclaycard Avios Plus credit card (50,000 Avios bonus until 30th May) here.

You have just a few days left to apply!

PS. After you have applied, you may receive various emails from Barclaycard which talk about receiving 25,000 Avios or 5,000 Avios, which are the standard bonuses. You can ignore this messaging – you will receive the 50,000 Avios or 10,000 Avios as long as you apply by 30th May and hit the spending target.

  • MKB says:

Presumably holding the Hilton Honors Visa still blocks you from this bonus? I’m surprised that Hilton allow Barclays to effectively discourage you from having their affinity card.

    • Rob says:

Totally sensible contract. If I hire you to provide a service to HfP readers I would want you to agree not to solicit those people for a competing site.

    • Track says:

Hilton does not compete with BA for customers…

It’s more of our socialist approach: one piece of bread, erm one credit card per a pair of hands.

      • Rob says:

You are missing the point. Hilton is introducing its customer base to Barclays. Barclays cannot then go off and effectively sell them to someone else.

You are free to cancel your Hilton card and wait 6 months to get an Avios card with a full bonus. The same rule applies to ANY OTHER BARCLAYCARD HOLDER.

The ONLY difference with Hilton is that Barclays is banned from allowing to swap cards via the app without requiring a gap. I don’t even see why you’d want to do this though. Why upgrade in the app for a 5k bonus when you can cancel, wait 6 months and potentially get a 50k bonus (assuming the offer returns)?

  • Michael Luttig says:

I have cancelled my Hilton Honors Visa, so that I can apply for the above. There was no other way around it.

  • brian says:

I’m hoping to hit the £10,000 BAPP spend off the back of the 70,000 Avios offer in the next 2 weeks. Given I’ve never held two cards concurrency or jumped from one to another, which of the following approaches is likeliest to ensure I face no issues getting accepted by Barclaycard?

    1) Downgrade my BAPP to the free card sometime between now and the end of the promotion
    2) Cancel my BAPP altogether meaning I’ll have no other credit card of any sort on my credit report (depending on how quick it is to update)
    3) Apply for the Avios Plus Mastercard whilst holding my BAPP (looks like I have a £22k credit limit)
    4) Some other approach

    • Rob says:

Realistically none, since anything you do now won’t reflect on your credit file before the Barcs offer ends.

Cutting your credit limit to 3x your max ever monthly spend never hurts though. Don’t cut it further as it looks like you are pushing too near your cap.

      • brian says:

Not that surprised to hear that it’s too late to take any action ahead of the end of the promo. Going forward I’ll try stick with that 3x rule.

  • BobM says:

I can’t see much use for the Barclaycard upgrade voucher as I use BA Amex 241 vouchers for our reward bookings.

Is it cost effective to keep the Avios Plus card for annual non Amex spend, then pocket the 7000 Avios instead of the voucher, along with the greater Avios earning rate?

    • Rob says:

      Yes, of course.

If you spend exactly £20k on the free card you’d be averaging (with the 7k bonus) 1.35 Avios per £1 spent. Nothing else free comes close.

Less clear cut on the paid card but the answer depends on how much you spend in total.

    • Track says:

Depends on the spend amount, but remember you can pay council tax by CC directly with most councils and use Barclaycard with Curve.

      • BobM says:

        Thanks guys.
I tend to continue to use the BAPP Amex after reaching the £10k voucher threshold due to the Avios earning rate, but with the 1.5x earning rate of the Avios Plus card it might be worthwhile switching over to use that immediately after earning a 241.

        • PH says:

Amex offers are one consideration if you use them. The less you use your Amex card, the fewer you get (IME).

  • KP says:

I recently got the card (within the promotional period via HfP), but the spend counter within the app and some promotional emails that I received from them all state 25000 points. I hope this is just the default system behaviour and the bonus will apply as a total of 50000 avios when I reach the £3000 spend, as it was showing when I was applying…

    • Rob says:

      You’re fine, you get 50k.

      • KP says:

I can confirm. I just reached the threshold. The app shows the 25000 goal as complete, but in the pending points I noticed that 50000 were added on top of what was already pending. There is also text noting that the points will transfer on the second business day of the next month.

  • MikeT says:

Hi, signed up to the paid card a few weeks ago via your link and just happened to notice earlier after getting an email from Barclaycard saying similar that the Barclaycard app says my welcome bonus reward is 25,000 Avios, not 50,000, when I hit £3,000.

I’ll reach the £3,000 shortly, now wondering what Avios will actually be credited…

  • Shane says:

    A word of caution!

I applied for the Avios Plus card 10 days ago, and having uploaded the required documentation, got an email back with the subject line “We can’t use the income info you sent us”. Lower down it says “Unfortunately, we can’t see your name/address and income clearly on the documents you uploaded. Please can you check and try again?”

I’ve now received the card, and got a pin, but the credit limit is a derisory £200, presumably because they are still struggling to ‘read’ my uploaded documents.

My financial affairs are not straightforward, I own my own business, draw very little salary, and receive most of my income by way of dividends, which stay in my director’s loan account until required. Needless to say I have several bank accounts and several credit cards. I have now uploaded copies of my latest tax return, the inland revenue tax calculation, plus several months of statements on my main bank account, which should have Barclaycard happy to welcome me with a credit limit of at least £10K.

However the computer is still saying NO. every time I re-upload the documents (which are all bank/HMRC generated PDFs I get the same response. I ‘phoned customer services, and spoke with someone who would like to have been able to help me, but simply couldn’t. She said the uploaded information is dealt with my ‘a back-office team’ who I can’t talk to, and even she can’t talk to. She said she could send them a message, but they probably wouldn’t respond, and my best bet would be to go to a Barclays branch with all of my documentation.

Luckily there is still a full service branch of Barclays close to where I work, so off I toddled. After an hour and a half’s wait I finally got to see someone who was very sympathetic, and somewhat perplexed, but told me that although they would re-upload the documents for me, they also can’t speak to anyone in the back-office team either, so we would just have to hope for the best.

I showed this person a copy of my Experian report downloaded the previous day, showing I had a credit score of 999 (out of a maximum of 999!). She sighed, muttered about the bank needing to do do due diligence in the way they have chosen, and said she hoped that as my documentation had now been uploaded by the bank it would now be accepted. Two days later, I’m still waiting to find out!

    • Natalia says:

Very similar experience. After 3 weeks backwards and forwards – no result: still £200 credit. Reluctantly decided to cancel the the card , it was going nowhere, frustrating and too time consuming ( wasting really). They don’t want to offer a credit to selfemployed by the sound of things.

      • Rob says:

I thought the self employed were still unofficially banned and was surprised to be told otherwise by Barclays this week.

      • Bhav says:

I am not self employed but same problem with £200 credit limit and no change despite uploading payslips etc. No way for any other staff to ‘influence’ credit limit decision. So I cancelled within a week.

  • Natalia says:

It is a shame as I have not realised that it was an issue me being self employed!
Never had a problem with any credit cards – feel a bit deceived by the ad about being spending 3K in 3 month where in reality only able to spend £200 a month !

    • Jon says:

Can you not spend £200 make a £200 payment to your account and repeat 15 times?
Not very convenient, but surely you don’t have to wait for a statement to clear your balance?
