All week we have been running a special Avios offer with The Wine Flyer, the new British Airways wine ordering portal.

Due to strong demand, and because we had some feedback from readers who were not gin lovers that they would like non-gin options too, The Wine Flyer has added two new packages to the deal.

These ‘wine only’ packages let you earn 2,500 Avios with a £65 case of white wine or 3,000 Avios with a £80 case of mixed wines.

  • ThinkSquare says:

    No ‘red only’ case?

    • Rob says:

No. To be fair to WF they put this together impressively quickly and they did a good job even to get these additional two cases added in response to reader requests.

  • Phil says:

Sadly they don’t deliver to Northern Ireland (despite website talking about “UK delivery” with no exceptions mentioned. Response when I queried:

On the 6th April 2023 the Northern Irish Government introduced regulations which prohibits the collection and spending of loyalty points, including Avios, on any alcoholic product with an ABV percentage of 0.5% or more. This unfortunately now prohibits the delivery of goods to British Airways Executive Club members with a registration or delivery address in Northern Ireland until further notice.

    • Save East Coast Rewards says:

That would be devastating to this business if any other nations in the UK decided to do this. They should still allow you to deliver to NI if you opt out of points, although it wouldn’t be very competitive then why turn down orders if someone is willing to place them.

      • Rob says:

Remember that Scotland has had rules for years restricting loyalty points and alcohol, mainly because it was seen as a way of getting around the minimum price rules.

      • Colin MacKinnon says:

        It is even more complex!

        From Nectar T&Cs:
Nectar points are not available on the following limited range of Sainsbury’s goods and services: spirits and liqueurs, any alcohol product containing more than 0.5% ABV in Northern Ireland, all alcohol in Scotland & Wales,

        From Sainsbury UK:
Due to the introduction of recent government legislation, no retailer will be able to sell alcohol below the rate of the duty price plus VAT. Although it’s never been our trading policy to do this, we’ve introduced some new measures to ensure that we comply fully with the law.

Spirits and liqueurs are no longer included in promotions and coupons … This means that you’ll no longer earn Nectar points when purchasing spirits and liqueurs and, subsequently, any spend on these items will not contribute to the required spend to participate in marketing promotions and coupons.

Please note this also affects online promotions, evouchers and coupons printed with an online code.

The list of excluded goods are as follows:
        • Spirits
        • Liqueur
        • Wine when on any buy 6 save 25% promotion
        • In Scotland and Wales, all alcohol is excluded from qualifying spend. Alcohol Minimum Unit Pricing applies.

        • Erico1875 says:

Ive always received club card points buying wine from Tesco.
Am I interpreting the above statement/rules wrong?
BTW Im all for minimum pricing/ no multi buy policy as it does seem to help the overall problematic alcolhol problems we have

          • MattB says:

Sainsburys regularly gives me 200 points off their £4.50 House pinot rose which brings it to effectively £3.50 and will under the minimum unit price here in Wales.

          • Luma says:

For some reason Sainsbury’s has long had the no points on spirits anywhere in the UK, whereas Tesco still gave them. And you can’t redeem them solely for spirits either at Sainsbury’s, you’d have to have other shopping to the value of the bottle to get it for “free”.

I always used to save up my nectar points to treat myself to a bottle of whisky before they stopped it.

  • Colin MacKinnon says:

So if you want the gin, and live in Scotland or Wales, order it quick!

(Horseguards Gin @ £41.48. Minus £7.99 for the “free” cellar pass. = £33.49

Minus the 2,000 “free” avios at list price of 1.6p per avios (£32.00) = £1.49 for the gin !

And then take away something for delivery and you are, in effect, being paid to take the stuff away! It can’t be that bad, or watered down, surely?

So that’s HfP and BA fallen foul of both the Scottish minimum price rules. And the UK duty rules!!

    • Heathrow Flyer says:

If you look at the Scottish legislation it’s clearly states: ‘ …if you buy alcohol online in Scotland and the alcohol is sent from England, the minimum unit pricing will not apply.’

Also I don’t see how this would fall foul of UK Duty rules – UK duty is still being paid.

  • SteveCroydon says:

How can Northern Ireland introduce any new laws or regulations? There hasn’t been a NI Government or Assembly for over two years!!

  • James says:

    Good morning,

Apologies for going completely off-topic here, but would I qualify for the AMEX Dell £100 credit offer by shopping at https://www.dellrefurbished.co.uk/ does anyone know per chance? It is an official Dell website.

    Many thanks indeed.

  • ianM says:

It’s no surprise that governments make rules to restrict the supply of discounted alcohol, it’s a killer with over 3m deaths a year. So it’s pretty unethical of this site to promote it, what’s next, tobacco?

    • Rob says:

I suspect we won’t be seeing you turning up for free booze at the Summer Party then 🙂

      • Colin MacKinnon says:

Fortunately the cost of travel from Scotland for the party will make that “included” drink reassuringly expensive – and legal 😉

      • James says:

        😂😂

    • SteveCroydon says:

3m deaths per year – that’s worldwide and about 5% of all deaths apparently.

    • Joe says:

Pretty unethical of you to promote a nanny state in my book.

  • ianM says:

    There’s a free bar?
I thought your ticket price included one drink?

If there’s a free bar then maybe, consumption is always an individual choice.

  • Phil says:

Received a mailer this morning which gives 3000 avios when spending over £75 (with free delivery) as well as a year-long free delivery pass. Might be a better option than the above offer for some… The promo code is a unique code and not shareable unfortunately.
