IHG One Rewards has announced a new global promotion following a fallow few weeks.

You need to register here. A bit of thinking is involved because you need to choose between TWO different options.

IHG One Rewards is the loyalty scheme covering InterContinental, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Crowne Plaza and Hotel Indigo among other brands.

IHG One Rewards Autumn promotion

How does IHG’s new bonus points promotion work?

The offer runs from 6th June to 31st August.

You must register in advance via this link. Registration is now open.

You can learn more about IHG One Rewards in our overview article here.

What will you earn?

It’s up to you, interestingly:

IHG One Rewards Summer promotion

As you can see from the image above, you can choose from two options:

  • 2,000 bonus points for every two cash nights or
  • 10,000 bonus points for every four cash nights

Once you’ve made your decision, you cannot change it.

Reward stays do not count.

Existing bookings DO count so there is no need to rebook anything.  Only one room per stay counts towards the offer, so if you are booking multiple rooms you should put each in a different name.

Which option is best?

For those who do a lot of hotel stays, this isn’t a tricky choice. You are substantially better off with ‘10,000 points for every four nights’ rather than ‘2,000 points for every two nights’.

Let’s say you ended up with seven nights, and on 31st August you were kicking yourself for not triggering the 8th night. You would still be better off than if you’d chosen ‘2,000 points for two nights’, as seven nights earns 6,000 points under the first option and 10,000 points under the 2nd.

The only people who should choose ‘2,000 points for every two nights’ are those who are fairly confident they will only complete two or three paid nights during the period from 6th June to 31st August.

Even then …. if you were confident of doing three nights, you might be tempted to register for ‘10,000 points every four nights’ on the basis that something is likely to come up. You are only gambling 2,000 points and could potentially gain an extra 6,000.

IHG One Rewards Summer promotion

What is the bonus worth?

The standard earning rate in IHG One Rewards is 10 points per US$1 (80p) excluding taxes.  I value an IHG One Rewards point at 0.4p although you can often do better, which means your base return is 4p per 80p spent, ie 5.0%.

Of course, most HfP readers will have some sort of IHG One Rewards status.  This comes with a status bonus (applies to base points only):

  • 20% bonus for Silver Elite
  • 40% bonus for Gold Elite
  • 60% bonus for Platinum Elite
  • 100% bonus for Diamond Elite

Under this offer, and assuming you do an exact multiple of two or four nights:

  • you get an extra 1,000 points (£4) per night with the ‘2,000 points for every two nights’ offer
  • you get an extra 2,500 points (£10) per night with the ‘10,000 points for every four nights’ offer

This means that the offer is heavily geared towards people doing low value stays at, say, Holiday Inn Express-style hotels. There isn’t much here for anyone planning a week at InterContinental Maldives.

Conclusion

If you can do four nights, or a multiple of four, over the 11 weeks that this promotion is running, you will do OK. Bonus points worth £10 per night are not to be sniffed at, especially on low cost stays.

  • LiamG says:

Frustratingly I registered for this based on the email they sent with one click registration… but it only mentioned the 2000 points option, and I’ve got a 4 night stay coming up! Doh!

    • LiamG says:

Rechecking the email, I see it actually has a small print “want to earn another way?” option at the bottom after headline 2k for 2 nights info and link!

      • Ian says:

        Didn’t spot that either!

        Very naughty.

        • Rich says:

I’ve just gone back to check as I just hit register with one click too – but luckily my headline offer was 4 nights for 10k. Small print was the 2 night version.

Last time they ran this promo I opted for the 4 for 10k option and so perhaps that’s how my default option? Or some other kind of targeting. I am not a prolific IHG customer.

    • Man of Kent says:

My email was the opposite with the 10k for 4 nights as the headline with the 2k for 2 nights in the small print.

  • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

T’other day this was due to start tomorrow and for stays from tomorrow to be included

Annoying as I have a 5 night stay starting tomorrow!

    • H says:

I have some cheap stats in Indonesia – I assume these only count if I bring the threshold of spend above 30 dollars

      • Andrew J says:

As per the Ts & Cs yes.

      • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

The room rate excl taxes must be over $30. Charging food / drink to the room won’t change that requirement

  • Ian says:

I could have sworn that this offer was on last quarter as well.

  • Dubious says:

    Good analysis and interesting psychology:
I have one stay booked already and sone upcoming travel that may or may not require hotel accommodation.

10,000 bonus points might encourage me to stretch to another 3 IHG nights over the period, whereas an extra 2000 is not enough to make me stretch an extra 1 night.

  • Dubious says:

“ the offer is heavily geared towards people doing low value stays at, say, Holiday Inn Express-style hotels”

    – I presume that is intentional, or am I giving the promotors too much credit?

I am wondering if the recent growth in ‘luxury’ travel has created an imbalance with lower end brands experiencing a lower uptake (and thus needing a bit of extra promoting?)

    • Julia says:

Interesting, we thought it was the other way round, more business people in lower end properties because high end properties had gotten too expensive which in turn pushed up lower end prices.??

  • Claire f says:

I assume that the ambassador free weekend night means I would only get 1 night towards this. 3 night stay in Singapore but one is a reward night and the other 2 using the ambassador certificate.

  • Bob says:

As usual these promotions deliver non elite points which, with Creation leaving IHG, does nothing to help trying to maintain diamond status. Might be worth a go though. No sign yet of anyone picking up the Creation mantle?

  • Greg Grant says:

When I click through the ‘Stay 4 nights’ graphic it takes me to the 2 nights offer only. I can’t find the registration for 4 nights offer anywhere.

    • Richard Peters says:

See above It’s in the small print. I logged into account separately and it’s there. HIX not first choice but found HIX for £45pn so good return

      • tiriavpo says:

Yes, but I think Greg is saying the 10k link goes to the 2k offer.
I had the same email prioritised for 2k and clicked on the small print at the bottom and got to the page for both offers. From there I clicked the 10k link but the confirmation email said I had registered for 2k.
Live chat seems to think it might be correctable but we’ll see.

        • Greg Grant says:

Thanks, that was exactly what I was saying. But IHG appear to have corrected it and the graphical link for 4 nights now clicks through to the correct page.

    • tiriavpo says:

I had the same, and inadvertently registered for the wrong offer. Maybe clear cache etc and try again as mine now works correctly, albeit too late.
