Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Avios flight prices cut by up to 60% on Bangkok Airways, LATAM, Virgin Australia, MEA, RwandAir

Back in March 2022, Qatar Airways officially adopted Avios as its frequent flyer currency. Qmiles are no more.

If you think ‘so what?’ because you could already book Qatar Airways flights via British Airways Executive Club, you need to think again.

Qatar Airways Privilege Club has a number of airline partners which British Airways Executive Club does not.

Even better, Qatar Airways has just cut the cost of non-BA partner redemptions by up to 60%. This is a permanent reduction, not a special offer.

Qatar Airways Privilege Club partner redemptions were historically bad value

Whilst Qatar Airways Privilege Club and British Airways Executive Club have shared pricing for Qatar Airways and British Airways redemptions, Qatar Airways Privilege Club was weirdly expensive for other airline partners.

Until last March, this was very much a ‘take it or leave it’ situation for any Qatar Airways Privilege Club member who wanted to redeem on a oneworld partner airline (Cathay Pacific, Japan Air Lines, Royal Jordanian etc) or one of Qatar’s exclusive partners.

However, once the Avios partnership with BA was introduced, Qatar Airways had a problem.

Any member of Qatar Airways Privilege Club with a brain was now moving their Avios across to British Airways Executive Club and booking via ba.com instead.

Qatar Airways Privilege Club has now aligned its pricing with British Airways Executive Club for partner awards. QPC members no longer need to move their Avios to British Airways Executive Club to get the best Avios partner airline pricing.

What’s this got to do with me as a British Airways Executive Club member?

It makes ZERO difference to you if you want to book oneworld partner airlines.

You should still book these via ba.com because:

  • they cost the same as using Qatar Airways Privilege Club
  • you can book online (Qatar Airways Privilege Club members need to call or use an online enquiry form to book partner awards except for BA and American Airline)
  • you can cancel online if necessary
How to earn Avios on Bangkok Airways

There is a huge benefit to you if you want to book a Qatar Airways non-alliance partner

You can find details of all Qatar Airways Privilege Club partners – cars, airlines, hotels, the lot – on this page of the Qatar Airways website.

These are the airlines which you can book via Qatar Airways Privilege Club using Avios, but which cannot be booked via British Airways Executive Club:

  • Bangkok Airways
  • LATAM
  • Middle East Airlines
  • Oman Air (Doha to Muscat only)
  • RwandAir
  • Virgin Australia

You can also EARN Avios on these airlines via Qatar Airways Privilege Club, as well as earn Avios on jetBlue, as this article explains.

Whilst you could already spend Avios on selected LATAM routes via BA and Iberia Plus, there are restrictions. These restrictions do not apply to redemptions via Qatar Airways Privilege Club.

How many Avios will I need to redeem on these airlines?

Here is the new chart for redemptions on the airlines listed above:

Qatar Airways Avios airline partner reward chart

This chart matches the British Airways Executive Club redemption chart for partner redemptions.

Earn Avios with Middle East Airlines

Here’s an example of old vs new pricing, courtesy of Singapore website Mainly Miles.

Bangkok Airways, flying from Singapore to Koh Samui

  • Economy – was 15,000 Avios and is now 6,000 Avios
  • Business – was 30,000 Avios and is now 12,500 Avios

Taxes and charges are obviously payable on top and will vary by airline.

How do you book?

To book, you need to fill in an online form which you can find here (log-in required).

How do you find availability? Not easily. The best option is to join the frequent flyer scheme of the airline you want to redeem with, try to find reward seats and then ask Qatar Airways if it can see the same seats.

Even better, look for seats via another partner airline which allows online booking – if one partner has them, Qatar Airways should have access too. You can use the Qantas website to search for Bangkok Airways availability for example.

Some other small print to note:

  • you cannot mix airlines on the same redemption booking
  • you must book at least 96 hours before departure

Conclusion

The cost of redeeming Avios for:

  • Bangkok Airways
  • LATAM
  • Middle East Airlines
  • Oman Air (Doha to Muscat only)
  • RwandAir
  • Virgin Australia

is now substantially, and permanently, reduced. It is yet another reason to ensure that your British Airways and Qatar Airways Privilege Club accounts are linked – the instructions are here.

  • QFFlyer says:

Did LA not retain partnerships with most of its ex-Oneworld partners when leaving? I haven’t booked using Avios since pre-pandemic, but I’m pretty sure QF can still redeem on LA, did BA not join that party?

    • Marwan says:

Latam is still a BA partner (you can earn Avios/no TPs, and redeem). No first hand experience but read on a Brazilian blog (June 5th) that LATAM award availability is available once again for online bookings on ba.com.

      • Richie says:

        Thanks, very useful info.

        • meta says:

Yes, you can redeem LATAM with BA.

Even though we pointed out here and there is a thread on the forum, HfP keeps repeating that it is not possible.

          • meta says:

They left OW, but retained partnership with all OW airlines except American Airlines.

  • Paul says:

Seems QR it just as bad as BA. Using you link it just throws me out saying try again later.
Meanwhile Delta quite useful for showing LATAM availability

  • Gordon says:

Bangkok airways is an interesting option, Not the most cost effective choice, Had a few delays with them over the years CNX to BKK, But a good product,Their lounges are adequate which you can access with a standard fare ticket!

  • Dude26 says:

@Rob – you mention “Zero difference between booking on BA or QR” for one world partners, but : are the taxes & surcharges when one redeems via BA or QR exactly the same…?
Since QR doesn’t allow “dummy bookings” online for OW partners, I haven’t been able to see if so or not.

  • tony says:

The discounts go beyond just partner bookings.

I’m seeing DXB-DOH-LHR/BHX/MAN for 45k and AED800 in J (with the first leg in F)

better cancellation terms than BAEC, too…

  • whiskerxx says:

Where do I find Virgin Australia?
It doesn’t appear in my drop down list.

  • Dan says:

Is the transfer bonus of 30% of Avios from Bank to QR a good deal? Didn’t see these for year at BA.

Did anyone tried and then moved the Avios to BA?

Here what they say at QR:

“ Collect 30% bonus Avios & you could win 100,000 more

Planning a holiday to the destination of your dreams? You can now collect 30% bonus Avios with your bank to elevate your travel experience. Simply convert reward points into Avios by 30 June 2023.*

The excitement does not stop there. You could be one of 10 lucky members to win an additional 100,000 bonus Avios.* The more you reward points you convert, the greater your chances of winning.

How to convert your reward points
Log in to the rewards account that you have with your bank.
Choose to convert your reward points into Avios with Qatar Airways Privilege Club.
Enjoy bonus Avios credited to your Privilege Club account.
Get ready to create sweet memories in all corners of the globe with your Avios. Use them towards shopping and dining at Qatar Duty Free, award flights, upgrades and more.

    *Terms and conditions apply
Collect bonus Avios with these banks and many more”

    • Rhys says:

No UK banks or financial institutions allow conversion to Qatar Avios. So unless you have the Amex International Dollar/Euro card it’s irrelevant!

    • Skywalker says:

      “Terms and conditions apply”

      Participating partners:

Ahlibank (Qatar), Ahli United Bank, ahlibank Oman, Air Miles, American Express (France & India), Banque Saudi Fransi, BNZ, Cathay United Bank, Commercial Bank (Qatar), CIMB, Citibank, Commonwealth Bank, CTBC Bank, Doha Bank, Dukhan Bank, Emirates Islamic, Hana Bank, HSBC (Hong Kong, Mexico, Taiwan, USA), Hyundai Card, Kasikorn Bank, Kuwait Finance House, Mashreq, Masraf Al Rayan, Ping An E-wallet, QIB, QIIB, QNB, Standard Chartered Bank (Singapore).

  • Harrisjamieh says:

Does anyone have any idea of taxes & charges on Bangkok Airways? Those flight prices can sometimes be hard to swallow especially to places to USM where they essentially have a monopoly. Circa 10k miles for a return sounds like a steal

    • Lewis says:

It was 400THB per person return when I booked Chiang Mai to Samui recently.

    • Rob says:

Just normal airport charges – some mention in the Mainly Miles article I link to.

      • NicktheGreek says:

Rob – this leads me to a question on your cooperation with other travel/points sites.

Last week Rhys’ Malaysian Airlines article was quoted by Executive Traveller and OMAAT (and I’m sure many others). Do they just read the website like everyone else, or there a more collaborative approach with some other pages out there?

Do you see a noticable uptick in traffic from those parts of the world when they do credit articles to you etc?

This is just purely from a curiosity perspective, having read Executive Traveller (and before that ABT) and OMAAT religiously for the last 5+ years, and your site more recently since moving to England.

        • Rob says:

We tend to flag up exclusive stuff to others with a geo niche in that region, but there is also a lot of just lifting stuff from each other 🙂
