Amex Member Week £75 off £300 Amex Travel spend deal is live – but excludes flights

Last week we flagged American Express ‘Member Week’, a new initiative this year which copies a successful US promotion

Amidst all of the competitions and other promotions, the one thing that seemed to offer genuine value was £75 cashback on a £300 Amex Travel spend.

The deal is now live so we have full clarity on how it works. The bad news is that flight bookings are excluded.

American Express Member Week

It is also very restricted, both in terms of the number of registrations allowed and the cards on which it appears.

The good news is that, if you are selected, you have until 20th December to make your purchase.

You MUST register for the offer before making a booking. You may, or may not, find it under the ‘Offers’ tab of your American Express card:

Amex Member Week

Here are the key things to note:

  • It’s restricted to 20,000 registrations, which is a tiny fraction of the UK American Express cardholder base. Move quickly if you want to register.
  • It does not seem to appear on co-brand travel cards (British Airways, Marriott), presumably due to conflicts with the co-brand partner – your best bet is Gold or Platinum, and I don’t even have it on my Platinum (it is on my wife’s Gold)
  • It only appears to be on primary cards, not supplementary cards
  • The £300 must be spent in a single transaction
  • You have until 20th December to make your booking, and there are no restrictions on when the hotel stay or car hire actually takes place
  • Only pre-paid hotel and car hire bookings count, not flights
  • As usual, hotel bookings via Amex Travel will be ineligible for status benefits or loyalty points, so the deal is best used for independent hotels or those where you have no interest in points

The bottom line is that it’s both better and worse than we expected. The inability to book flights is disappointing, as is the low number of registrations allowed, but the fact that you have until 20th December to book means that those who can register should be able to find a way of using it.

Added to Plat Buss after 30 min telephone call. Was told that offer all used, offer not for plat business card holders, but eventually added.

Think there is no other value to this promotion, but will “spend” 100 points for the draw ( if I can enroll ) All it has done is to confirm that Amex IT is not up to the job.

  • TeesTraveller says:

No offer on my Gold or my AERCC.

Interesting that since I downgraded from Platinum to Gold, I get more relevant offers than before (Omorovicza anyone?). Us Northerners are not regular visitors to Bond street jewellers Knightsbridge department stores either so perhaps the £5 statement credit when I spend £40 in B&M puts me back in my place?

  • Andy says:

I’ve not booked with Amex Travel before, is there a way to tell if it’s a pre-paid rate when doing searches, or are they all pre-paid rates?

I’m looking to book Beijing in February and there’s plenty of hotels on Amex that aren’t my usual brands I’d be happy to try.

  • meta says:

I managed to get manually enrolled in the end. They did say that the offer will appear in the next 24-48 hours, so if you have been enrolled manually you have to wait until it appears in your offers before spending otherwise it won’t count.

  • Little Littlewood says:

I received the email but when i logged in nothing was there? surely that is just teasing me AMEX??

  • qc says:

The pop up on my account linked to nothing but I managed to get it added manually to my BAPP by sending them a screenshot of my email.

  • jayjay says:

I didn’t see the Amex Travel one either – spent a while on Amex Chat and they refused to add it because I wasn’t eligible (on a Platinum). They happened to ask for the Amex members week email but I don’t have it anymore so ended up just raising a complaint. So annoying!

  • bigsi says:

I also had to email a copy of the offer and eventually they added it on my Platinum card. Very poor to send you an offer and then not have it showing in your ‘offers’.

    • jayjay says:

I know right. I just got the email from Amex now so going to try my luck again.
