The Aer Lingus Avios cut-off moves to 6 days from 60 days following our coverage

Yesterday we told you how Aer Lingus had quietly brought in a 60 day rule for Avios bookings.

The contact centre had confirmed in writing what Avios collectors had been noticing for a couple of weeks – that all availability, on all routes, seemed to have dried up near to the point of departure.

After we published our article yesterday, it all came back! Well, nearly all. It seems that a six day rule is now in place instead.

Here is the screenshot I published yesterday showing zero Avios availability on 6th January (60 days away) – or indeed any day earlier than 6th January – between London Heathrow and Dublin:

On 7th January – 61 days in advance, at the time I took the screenshots – you were rolling in reward seats:

Aer Lingus now seems to have changed its mind

Things have changed following our article.

Take a look at what is now available on 6th January, compared to the top screenshot above:

Lots and lots of Aer Lingus seats are now bookable.

However, you still can’t book for immediate travel. I am typing this on Thursday 9th, and the first day that is bookable is Wednesday 15th:

It’s not perfect, but it’s definitely an improvement.

Feels like they might have out the wrong number in…

    You’re my hero.

    Well done!
Now can you make BA pay us the money they’ve owed us for months, please?

    • Richie says:

My guess is the issue will emerge on daytime TV consumer issues slots sometime soon.

Thank you Rob for this intervention. It shows the influence that HfP has on the industry. We are lucky to have you and the team doing this work.

    Customer feedback ?

    • Rob says:

Only from people who read our article. It went to 60 days about 3 weeks ago from what we can tell.

  • John says:

They need to return it to 24 hours. The ability to avail of last minute redemptions is a core amenity of Avios.

    • Kristina says:

I once did a same day redemption on BA as my flight was very late in the day (with another airline) and I just wanted to go home sooner. I was very happy I could do it that day, that’s what I call flexibility 😄

  • Mark says:

This is a core bonus of avios collection and I truly believe this could really damage them if they rolled similar out elsewhere.

    • Rob says:

Agree. Swapped the time of my wife’s flight this afternoon on Wednesday after her plans changed.

  • Soloflyer1977 says:

Something is still not right. You can currently book next day EI LHR to DUB redemption using United miles. I would have thought the “points” availability rules would be equal across all providers, or dare I say it better with avios.

    • Rob says:

No, United is different. It gets access to certain cash ticket buckets to use as rewards.

      • Soloflyer1977 says:

Oh good to know. Hopefully, we get back to the good old days of being able to book up to 24h of the flight.
