From 2025, British Airways is changing your Executive Club membership year. It will be aligning tier point collection years for all members to start on 1st April.

British Airways has updated its Q&A during Tuesday to reflect issues which we raised earlier in the day, and we now have a little more clarity.

The biggest winners are families where everyone has a different tier point year end. You can currently have a situation where each family member takes exactly the same flights but some gain status whilst others don’t. This problem will go away.

The biggest long-term downside is that the ‘grace period’ is cut from 7 weeks to 4 weeks. At present, your year ends on the 8th of the month but you retain your old status until the end of the FOLLOWING month. Going forward, all membership years will end on 31st March and all tier statuses will adjust on 30th April.

Why is British Airways doing this?

The official reason is ‘simplicity’.

You can’t argue with that. The current trial of awarding tier points for British Airways American Express spend, for example, is not working as well as it should because of different membership year end dates.

The real reason is probably to align the BA system with Iberia, which already uses April to March membership years, in advance of a joint change to the BA / Iberia tier point system at some future date. This seems likely to involve some sort of revenue or credit card spend metric, given how the world is moving.

How BA tier point collection years currently work

At the moment, your tier point collection year is based on the anniversary of the date you joined British Airways Executive Club. Your tier points would reset on the 8th day of your anniversary month.

For example, if you joined in March, your membership year would reset on 8th April. If you joined in November, it would be 8th December.

This meant that the entire cohort of British Airways Executive Club members is spread across twelve possible membership year end dates.

(This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Whilst frustrating for families, it avoids any spike in call centre activity or tier point runs which will occur when everyone has the same date.)

How tier point collection years will work going forward

From 2025, British Airways is aligning tier point collection years for all members.

That means that instead of twelve possible combinations, everyone’s tier points will reset on the same date.

British Airways has chosen to follow the UK fiscal year, starting on 1st April and ending on 31st March.

That means you’ll need to earn enough tier points to qualify for Bronze, Silver or Gold status within this period.

The change will occur on 1st April 2025.

I’m not sure that 1st April is, logically, the best option because of how Easter moves from year to year and this tends to be a period with reduced corporate travel. In some years it will make it harder to push through additional flights in the weeks leading to 31st March. It will also impact leisure travellers who use long-haul cash flights over Easter to drive their tier points.

What this means for you

Depending on your current membership year, this change will affect you differently. For that reason, we have put together a separate article outlining how the transition from now until 1st April 2025 will be handled, which you can read here.

However, the bottom line is:

– If your membership year ends before the new rules kick in (1st April 2025), this year will be as normal
– Your next membership year will end 31 March 2025 regardless of how short this will be
– To make up for it, BA will re-credit any tier points earned in your old membership year from 1st April 2024 to your new partial membership year

Everyone’s tier point balances will reset on 1st April 2025, which will become the first full year under the new, aligned system.

What about your existing status?

Here is what British Airways says:

“No, there will be no change to:

  • Your current Tier status
  • The benefits you receive according to your Tier status
  • The way you can renew or upgrade your status during your Tier Point collection period ending on or before 8 March 2025

Any Tier status earned in your next Tier Point collection period ending on 31 March 2025 will be valid until 30 April 2026.”

BA has now updated the FAQ following our queries to add:

Any existing status valid beyond 31 March 2025 will continue for the full duration.

These means, for example, that if you have already earned Gold status in your current membership year, which ends 8th October 2024, your status will remain valid until 30th November 2025. It will not be shortened to end on 30th April 2025.

However, your ‘soft landing’ period will be reduced. In the example above, even though British Airways is allowing you to keep your Gold status until 30th November 2025, your soft landing to Silver – assuming you don’t requalify – will only last until 30th April 2026 and not 31st November 2026.

Conclusion

The changes BA is making to the Executive Club mean it make it simpler to understand. Rather than twelve different possible membership years, based on your anniversary of joining, everyone’s years will start and end on the same day.

(Of course, this also means that a lot of people will be doing tier point runs at the same time. I suspect flights to Sofia in Club Europe will be fully booked for all of March 2025, as this route earns 160 tier points return for around £200 in a sale.)

The change will also align BAEC with Iberia Plus, and should also simplify the IT backend required to make it all work if the programmes are moved to the same platform.

The good news is that BA is implementing a year-long transition period. This is a fair way of moving to the new system and allows everyone to earn status under both the new and existing system.

    Presumably this will also annoy those that went big, early on the Amex TP offer and get the 200 TP before Apr 1 but those that trigger it between 1 Apr and 21 May will do OK…

    Rob, my year ends on June 8 and I should have 1520 points by then. From what I’ve read I will then have until 31 March 2025 to gain another 1500 points to take me through to and including March 2026. I have a BAH booked in April 2024 which will qualify for double points to give me 320 points. Will these double points be included within the tier point adjustment period between 1 Apr to 8 Jun or will they only count the standard 160 points? I actually have a further 3 BAH taking place after June 8 which will give me 960 points. Adding the 320 from the April 2024 trip will obviously help but only as long as that trip is still counted as double points within the adjustment period. I have another trip booked in September that will give me 160 points so it feels like I just need to find a trip that will give me 60 points between 1 Apr 2024 and 31 Mar 2025 to extend to 2026 if the above is correct?

      No. If you cross Gold after 1st April this year, then you will have Gold until the end of April 2026.

    I think the 8th April people are the only group who will slightly lose out here.

    Qualifying for a new tier after that date in 2024 would previously have got you status lasting until 31 May 2026. Now it will only last until 30 April 2026, so the loss of 1 month of status.

    Also the one-off “double counted” points opportunity window for this group is just 7 days (1st to 8th April 2024) so very unlikely to be too much help in the transition year.

      They were the conclusions I reached too, being a member of the April club.

      Unless of course they do go ahead and change any already-earned status published as expiring after 30 April 2026. Those people could be even worse off. See my example earlier of the worst case being a Feb member who earns their status entirely between 9 Feb 2025 and 8 March 2026. On 8 March 2025, their account would show that as expiring 31 March 2027. From 9 March 2026, according to the logic explained on the BA website, it would magically update to 30 April 2026.

      I think the BA Press Office is very likely to be correct that that won’t happen. Once BA have published a status expiration date on the website, people can take screenshots and have reasonable complaints if it is then changed to an earlier date.

      No. The losers are the golds who get their TPs in early in their year, with the worst affected being those who don’t need to yield any tier points between 1st April 2024 and 31st March 2025 (maybe because they have planned on burning their Avios due to more upcoming changes!). They won’t lose any months of gold status, but will lose between 1 and 11 months of soft landing silver status, plus the extra 4 weeks grace period of being gold. For myself, I would have spent a good bit of cash with BA between September and December 2025. I will specifically delay that now until after April 2026. But the BA programme is likely to change again between now and then, depending on which way the wind blows, and if BA are logged into their own account.

    I’m still confused. My year end is June 8, 2024. I’m currently Silver and understand that i will remain silver until June 8, 2025 – so I’m unclear what these new rules do for me. Any help would be gratefully appreciated

      They don’t mean anything for you. Your current status will run its course as previously.

      It WILL affect any future status you attain.

      If you earn 600 TPs between 1st April 2024 and 31st March 2025, your silver status will be extended by 9 months to 30th April 2026. Alternatively, if you are happy to be bronze between 1st August 2025 and 30th April 2026, and then put 600 TPs into BA during April 2026, you will be silver until 30th April 2028 (presuming everything else remains constant).

    In recompense to all BA Executive Club members, BA has announced that they will be serving Laurent Perrier Grand Siècle on all flights, in all cabins, from February 29, 2025 until the end of the month.

    It seems to me you lose the opportunity for 2 full years status if you renew right at the start of your new tier point collection year. The maximum you can achieve now is 12 months. Have I got this right.

      No. When you upgrade or renew your status, the new status is valid until 30 April after the next collection year. (That’s a loss of 3 weeks compared to the current system.)

      For all members, Tier Points earned between 1 April 2024 and 31 March 2025 will count for status until 30 April 2026*. In other words, a member could earn 1,500 TP in any April and keep Gold status for over two years, followed potentially by soft landings if BA retain that feature.

      [* – Unless you have already earned a later status expiry date, in which case it remains to be seen what happens in year one of the new system.]

    “Is it just me” or applying UK Government smokescreen strategies, did BA roll out the information last week that LPGS champagne was being removed from First so that some UK flyerpoint sites (not this one) would spontaneously combust and the changes to status year ends would sneak through with less attention? If so, good to see that the strategy hasn’t worked out too well.
    The only limited upside is that there might be for anyone who is on track to miss status renewal in their current TP earning year and has front-loaded their flights to achieve it very early in their new status year. My question (to anyone still following this) is whether the current 7 weeks “extended status period” after you drop down a tier would allow you to regain status almost immediately by combining the front loaded flights in those 7 weeks with the retrospective credits from 9 April 2024 – or do you have to wait until 31 March 2025 for the next status award to be assessed? Not all that clear from the FAQs obviously 🙂

    I am still confused and was thinking this over on a BA flight this afternoon! I have one question.
    My tier point year ends/resets in November.
    I am currently Silver (approx 900 tier points). With a few trips planned, I will be Gold by mid March this year.
    If I get gold then, my assumption is that I will be Gold until end of 2025, with a soft landing to silver until April 2026, as per new rules.
    However, my question is, if I postpone one of the trips to April, which will result in me achieving Gold in April this year, will this result in getting Gold until April 2026, followed by a 12 month soft landing to silver?
