Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Which 35 airlines can you earn Avios on?

Today I want to look at which airlines you can earn Avios from.

You know about British Airways, of course.  But there are actually 35 airlines which let you earn Avios for some or all of their flights.

This number went up by two on Monday when Finnair adopted Avios, since there are two airlines which partner with Finnair but which do not partner with British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus or Qatar Airways.

Which airlines can you earn Avios on?

Which airlines let you earn Avios?

The list below is alphabetical. In brackets, I have added the programmes which let you earn Avios from that airline:

  • BA for British Airways Executive Club
  • IB for Iberia Plus
  • AC for avios.com / AerClub / Vueling Club
  • QR for Qatar Airways Privilege Club
  • AY for Finnair Plus

Note that, in some cases, only certain ticket types will earn. Heavily discounted Aer Lingus tickets do not earn Avios in British Airways Executive Club, for example. You need to credit such flights to an Aer Lingus AerClub account and then transfer the Avios to your BA account.

Here we go:

Aer Lingus (AC, BA)

Air Nostrum / Iberia Regional (AY, IB, BA)

Alaska Airlines (AY, BA, IB, QR)

American Airlines (AY, BA, IB, QR)

Oman Air has announced plans to join the oneworld alliance. You will be able to earn Avios on all of their flights – and not just the existing one route available via Qatar Airways Privilege Club – from late 2024.

A quirk – earn Avios on some Emirates flights (and KLM to Singapore)

Qantas has a carve-out from the usual oneworld alliance rules to allow you to earn Avios on flights which are codeshared with Emirates.

We wrote about this in more detail here, along with proof that it works.

Your ticket MUST carry a Qantas flight number in order to earn Avios and British Airways Executive Club tier points. This means, in most cases, that you need to book via the Qantas website or ask your company travel agent to force through the codeshare.

This is only likely to make sense for fully flexible business travellers, since the cheapest Emirates tickets are usually not offered via the codeshare. It is also restricted to selected routes.

Qantas has a similar deal with KLM on the Amsterdam to Singapore route as the article above also covers.

    Hi Rob
One further point on this, I saw from your previous article that your wife flew the same route and the same flight number as us QF8404 booked on the Qantas website! And she clearly got her points and tier points!

  • Paul S says:

Hasn’t / isn’t the Aer Lingus / United arrangement changed / changing? Whats the impact to earning Avios with United?

    • Rob says:

The codeshare has ended but mileage earning is still possible (at least for now).
