Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Interesting Avios deals if you need a hotel in Scandinavia or Finland

Back in March, Finnair adopted Avios as its reward currency. We are still waiting for the ability to transfer Avios to/from British Airways Executive Club which was promised for ‘May or June’.

We’ve been holding off doing a deep dive into the sweet spots of Finnair Plus because, frankly, there’s little value in doing so until you can move your Avios across. However, I wanted to flag two hotel deals.

Using Avios at Scandic and Sokos hotels

This article from US site Frequent Miler highlights how using Avios for redemptions at Sokos and Scandic hotels in Finland, Estonia and Scandinavia can be great value. We’re talking 2p+ per Avios on a good day.

Unlike other Finnair hotel partners, Scandic and Sokos let you check availability for Avios redemptions before you order a voucher. You have no risk of being stuck with a voucher you can’t use on your preferred date.

Remember that American Express Membership Rewards points transfer 1:1 into Finnair Plus Avios so you could move some Amex points across to take advantage. If you don’t have Amex points you’ll need to wait a few weeks for Avios transfers from BA to go live.

Finnair is not on the partners list in my Amex gold card account – do you know why?

    • Rob says:

Has it disappeared? I never rechecked ….

      • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

Yup – not on the list for my Bus Plat either…

        • ERMJ says:

Finnair transfer available for me with my UK AMEX card. Not seeing it on US AMEX.

  • MattB says:

I had this email from BAEC about a week ago:

We wanted to let you know that from today, the way you collect Avios at Bicester Village will become even easier than before.

From today, you may collect Avios as normal at Bicester Village when you shop with a registered credit or debit card linked to your British Airways Executive Club account. Avios will be awarded automatically for your purchases at eligible boutiques.

The collection service via the in-village Guest Concierge’s and the e-Redemption service will no longer be operational.

    • LittleNick says:

Does that mean you can double dip? Collect avios via the tracked card spend then go collect Virgin point?

      • Rob says:

We’re not sure but I suspect yes. You can double dip on Avios of course via Qatar.

      • Andrew. says:

        Triple Dip surely?

Register a Virgin Atlantic card on the BAEC Account, collect Virgin points as normal, Avios via instore, then collect Virgin points via the concierge.

    • Roosit says:

I saw this too. FYI it seems this is not the case for the other, international Villages in the same group: at least collecting Avios at Wertheim Village in Germany still worked via their Concierge Service last week.

  • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

At the time of writing the IHG sale isn’t active.

Checking the T&Cs these would be fully prepaid non refundable rates. So I think excluded from being able to use a Confirmable Suite upgrade.

Also covers including NZ, Australia and Japan.

  • Hilda M says:

IHG sale live (with a bit of a loop) My usual IC TS is 207 ++ (non refundable) rather than 268++ (cancel 2 days before)

  • TGLoyalty says:

Surely you can double dip now BA is linked to card?

  • executiveclubber says:

Cannot find this IHG deal anywhere. Help pls!

    • LD27 says:

Prices are definitely available. Been checking a NYC, Vegas and California. If you go into app, they appear when you select view all prices. Prices have definitely gone down on hotels I’ve been following. Sadly no IHG in Lone Pine. Son was lucky to get a returned pass for hiking John Muir trail. But at short notice all hotels and flights expensive so going via Vegas!

  • Ben says:

I’m owed about 10000 Avios by guest services which never credited, no reply from emails, totally useless, so this is an improvement imo

  • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

Just repriced a couple of existing bookings within the offer period.

Won’t be switching. Even though the railcard rate is $15-20 more per night I value the ability to cancel and rebook as appropriate and ability to use CSU. As thee rates are prepaid it precludes using CSU.

    YMMV
