Available at a handful of British Airways lounges worldwide, pre-flight dining offers an upgraded lounge dining concept with table service.

It is typically found at airports where the majority of British Airways flights are overnight, allowing premium passengers to eat before they board in order to maximise sleep time.

Let’s take a look at what you get and where you can get it.

What is British Airways pre-flight dining?

Pre-flight dining is a concept British Airways offers in several of its lounges, predominantly in the United States.

The majority of flights from the US to the UK are overnight red-eye affairs, and with the tailwind of the jet stream virtually all flights are shorter than their outbound counterparts.

Even West Coast flights, such as those from San Francisco, have a flight time around 9 hours – on average, 90 minutes less than on the way out. When you consider taxi, takeoff and landing, your time between when the seatbelt signs turn off and when they come back on again is reduced to eight hours or so.

On East Coast flights the effect is even worse, with the actual flight time hovering around the six-hour mark.

All that means is that for a lot of people – and particularly for business travellers – getting a good night’s sleep is more important than dining on board.

With that in mind, British Airways offers pre-flight dining. This is a restaurant-style table service at key lounges where you can eat before you step on your flight. You can go straight to sleep as soon as the seatbelt sign is off, and wake up refreshed in London the following morning.

What’s on the menu with British Airways pre-flight dining?

Last time I was in the Washington Dulles First Dining Room I had scallops (see below).

British Airways periodically changes the menu in its dining rooms, and in many cases it will also vary by location. Here is an example menu from the US lounges, provided by BA:

Starters:

  • Heirloom tomato gazpacho (choice to add crabmeat)
  • Tuna poke

Salad

  • Summer vegetable salad – heirloom tomatoes, charred asparagus, cucumber, mozzarella, balsamic vinaigrette with toasted sourdough

Main course

  • Chicken paillard, Satur Farms rocket, roasted tomatoes, shaved fennel, lemon vinaigrette
  • Prawn Masala curry, basmati rice, naan bread and coriander chutney
  • Tagliatelle pasta, choice of lamb bolognaise or vegetarian bolognaise
  • British Airways burger – angus beef short rib blend, brioche bun, lettuce, tomato, pickle, choice of cheddar, blue cheese, American cheese, bacon, sautéed mushrooms and onions

Dessert

  • Fig almond tart, vanilla gelato
  • Lemon posset, shortbread cookie, candied lemon, mint
  • Selection of ice cream and sorbets
  • Selection of cheese

Where does British Airways offer pre-flight dining?

There are currently ten airports where pre-flight dining or some sort of table service is available:

Boston Logan International Airport

Concorde Dining is available for First Class passengers in the British Airways lounge in Terminal E, opposite gate E11. Pre-flight dining is open from 4pm.

Dubai International Airport

Whilst not a true dining room, British Airways has a bar dedicated to First Class passengers with table service.

Johannesburg OR Tambo International Airport

First Dining is available for First Class passengers in the British Airways lounge in the International Departures Terminal, on the mezzanine level.

London Heathrow Terminal 5

BA’s flagship lounge, the Concorde Room, offers restaurant-style table service for First Class passengers departing from Heathrow Terminal 5.

London Heathrow Terminal 3

First Dining is available for First Class passengers in the British Airways First Class lounge in Terminal 3.

Newark Liberty International Airport (New York)

First Dining is available for First Class passengers in the British Airways lounge in Terminal B, near gates B50-B58.

Can I use First Dining if I’m a BA Executive Club Gold or Silver member?

No. Only passengers travelling in First or Executive Club Gold Guest List members have access to First Dining facilities or indeed the Concorde Room/Bars.

You won’t go hungry though. British Airways still provides a buffet in its lounges for passengers – you just won’t get restaurant-style table service.

It appears that the rule change put in place in September 2021, allowing all Gold and Silver members of British Airways Executive Club to use pre-flight dining, irrespective of travel class, has been quietly withdrawn.

DFW also offer pre flight dining in their AA flagship lounge’s 1st class dining room. This is available to people flying to LHR overnight or having arrived from LHR. It is located at Terminal D Between gates D21 and D22 Daily: 5 a.m. – 10:15 p.m.
On entry & on showing you boarding card you will be given an invitation card to the 1st class dining room.
The lounge also has a buffet & is very nice.

    • Simonbr says:

The manager behaved disgracefully. I had a 5-hour stop before my flight to lhr in F, so I got in and had something to eat & drink. I then had to leave to check in my case and he told me I wouldn’t be allowed back in. Then when I did go back he instructed his staff not to give me any more food! I asked to speak to his AA manager who reluctantly apologised and I was allowed a cheese plate. Very poor.

  • Scottpat78 says:

I’ve always had no luck pre flight dining in ORD T5 at the BA lounge. Flying J and gold status, I’ve never made it into the dining room, being told it is for F passengers only on several occasions and challenging it without success.
I’ve now given up with BA from ORD where possible as the lounge itself is terrible. I try to fly AA back home when I can and use T3 from ORD with a much better lounge.

  • JdeW says:

Just flew back CW from SLC (no BA/AA lounge at all) with a change in ORD and the BA lounge there is indeed no great shakes. Didn’t bother to ask about pre-flight dining. The BA plane was an old ying yang layout in CW, complete with collapsing footstool during the night!! Not a very auspicious journey experience.

  • Mouse says:

“You can go straight to sleep as soon as the seatbelt sign is off”

Why wait? You’re allowed to put the seat in bed position as soon as the wheels of the aircraft leave the ground.

  • Grant says:

In the article it says that pre flight dining was available for business im flying back from sfo on Monday is this still the case

  • JPK says:

If you eat in the lounge, can you eat again on board if you are still hungry? Or do they check if you already had a meal?

  • Wotsit says:

Rhys, I am confused. Your article initially makes it clear that pre-flight dining is for First passengers only. Towards the end you say “Historically, pre-flight dining required you to hold a ticket for Club World or First.”. My experience with Club World has always been limited to buffet style with no evidence of restaurant service. Please “unconfuse” me!

    • Tom says:

On my recent trip back from Washington it seemed as though the dining room was exclusively for First passengers. It was roped off from the main lounge and on arrival (noting that I was flying first) a staff member opened it up for me to go in for a meal. The people inside eating were all in the first class cabin on my flight.
Happy to be corrected but it certainly didn’t seem to be open to all passengers in the lounge.

    • Qrfan says:

I’m glad it’s not just me who is confused by this article. Looking at the jfk example, pre flight dining is limited to the Chelsea lounge, and gold/silver club world aren’t getting in there. Soho does not have pre flight dining as the old jfk lounges used to; it doesn’t even have a qr code menu any more. Just the buffet as you say.

    • Greenpen says:

Me too! The article text mentions First Class passengers for all the locations except JFK. The end of the article says First dining available to anyone in the lounges except Johannesburg.

  • Tom says:

I used the lounge in Washington (IAD) on Saturday before my return to London, in BA First. Not only do they have an excellent dining room where I enjoyed a lovely meal before my flight, with excellent table service. The rest of the lounge looked quite nice too. There is a great little bar at the back with views of the runway. I only tried the food in the first dining room which didn’t disappoint. Both the restaurant and the bar were serving champagne if that’s what you are after.

    • Ross says:

I flew from Dulles last night, Club World. There is a limited at-seat menu available via QR (mainly burgers), and an excellent buffet selection. Also quality champagne bar. It’s a great lounge, even without access to the First room (which I have tried previously).
