Where does British Airways fly from Southampton Airport?

Last weekend saw the start of British Airways flights from Southampton Airport for the summer season.

I thought this was a good excuse to take a look at the routes that BA Cityflyer will be operating from Southampton this year.

If you’ve never been to Southampton Airport, it has its own railway station – which is about 100m from the terminal – and can be reached on direct trains from London Waterloo in just over an hour.

There will be four routes flown by British Airways this summer:

  • Bergerac (Saturday flights out, already operating)
  • Palma de Mallorca (Sunday flights out, already operating)
  • Faro (Saturday flights out, starts 25th May)
  • Malaga (Sunday flights out, starts 26th May)

Tickets are available for cash or Avios via ba.com as usual.

What does British Airways offer from Southampton?

The routes are all operated by BA Cityflyer, a separate British Airways subsidiary.

It operates a fleet of Embraer E190 aircraft. These are smaller planes that are able to take off and land from London City’s short runways. When London City is closed over the weekend, some of the aircraft are moved to Southampton to operate these leisure routes.

The E190s feature 2-2 seating (image below) in both business class (Club Europe) and economy (Euro Traveller):

A densification programme is about to begin which will reduce the currently generous 33″ pitch from row 12 and add eight more seats (two rows) to each aircraft.

Service on board differs to British Airways flights from Heathrow and Gatwick. Economy passengers are offered a snack and a soft / alcoholic / hot drink, just like the old days on Heathrow and Gatwick services. Club Europe passengers receive the same service as they would on a mainline flight, albeit from a different catering company to Heathrow flights.

Whilst London City Airport does not have a lounge, which reduces the value of the Club Europe product, Southampton Airport does. Click here to read our recent review of The Spitfire Lounge.

As Rhys wrote:

Let’s be honest: you don’t expect a small airport like this to have a lounge as good as The Spitfire Lounge. In fact, I’ve been to many larger airports with significantly worse (or smaller) facilities.

2-2 seat picture missing for me

  • ukpolak says:

Looking forward to Palma and Malaga very soon. We booked reasonably early in cash and got pretty decent fares. Also looking forward to trying the lounge (although I was always puzzled what that room next to the gents w/c was, before they reopened!).

Plus Chambery, (Once we get back to Winter.)

  • Richie says:

BTW The aircraft don’t position LCY-SOU, yesterday an aircraft did LCY-PMI-SOU and today will do SOU-PMI-LCY.

  • Peter says:

The addition of 150m to the single runway is going to mean a considerable increase in the South East economy, after too many years of opposition on environmental grounds. The location and perfect rail connection, the interest & development of the services & handling, the increase in employment opportunities are all factors contributing to this good news. The airport can now rival the port, giving many more destinations to be visited.

    • Richie says:

easyJet chose Southend airport to base 3 aircraft from May 25, looks like Southampton airport may have to wait a bit longer for a significant airline to have a base there.

    • Doommonger says:

I used to love Bergerac, his car was a bit dodgy but for an old fella he used to pull some cracking birds.

      • Rob says:

Bergerac returns next year you’ll be pleased to hear, but unlikely he will no longer be ‘pulling cracking birds’ due to current sensibilities. John Nettles very grumpy that he’s not been offered a guest role. Google for more.

        • lumma says:

So he will be pulling “cracking birds” then?

          • Richie says:

BACF operate charter flights from Jersey for flydirect holidays, Bergerac could have a mysterious trip to Mallorca.

    • pauldb says:

I thought the extension would be a significant blow for Bournemouth airport, but Ryanair have continued to add routes and now Jet2 have made it a base for Summer 25. Surprising that SOU has missed out.

  • Rj-24 says:

Fingers crossed the Mallorca route doesn’t just operate on Sundays or my flights booked for the Saturday 6th and Saturday 13th July could prove problematic…

    • Richie says:

It’s PMI-SOU on Saturdays. There may be some Charters for TUI.

  • owjey says:

I live around the corner from SOU, yet I’ve only used it once. It just doesn’t have any routes I need, unfortunately.

  • RH says:

I love the BA flight out of SOU compared to the Ryanair Bmth flight same route. Shame they don’t operate all year round, in fact, the cut the Faro one to a shorter summer season this year.
