HSBC has launched a new 25% bonus on conversions of HSBC Premier credit card points to Avios.

This offer tends to come around every year or so and, 11 months on, here we are again. It has never been targetted in the past but be wary if you don’t see any mention of it online – perhaps try a very tiny test.

HSBC has published full T&C which isn’t always the case. One year they ran the bonus and never announced it at all, with people only finding out by chance it was running!

HSBC Premier to Avios points transfer bonus

What are the rules for the HSBC Premier Avios bonus?

It’s a simple one.

The offer runs from 3rd June to 17th July 2024.

You will receive a 25% bonus on all transfers from HSBC Premier credit cards to Avios.Your base Avios will arrive instantly, as with all other HSBC airline and hotel transfers. In theory the bonus Avios take 14 days to arrive, but in previous years the bonus turned up instantly or very quickly.

Are the HSBC Premier credit cards a good way of earning Avios?

The two HSBC Premier credit cards are very generous.  The snag is that you need to have a HSBC Premier current account to get them.  Whilst Premier is free, the income and/or savings requirements are high as you can see here.

The free HSBC Premier Mastercard, reviewed here, earns 1 HSBC point per £1 spent (2 HSBC points per £1 spent abroad) and these convert at 2:1 into airline or hotel points.  This means that you are getting 0.5 airline miles or hotel points per £1 spent in the UK. Don’t get confused by the HSBC earning rate and the equivalent airline miles and hotel points earning rate.

The £195 per year HSBC Premier World Elite Mastercard, reviewed here, earns 2 HSBC points per £1 spent in the UK (1 airline mile or hotel point per £1) and double this when abroad.

You can transfer your HSBC Premier points into the following airline schemes:

  • Asia Miles
  • British Airways Executive Club
  • Emirates Skywards
  • Etihad Guest
  • EVA Air MileageLands
  • Finnair Plus
  • Flying Blue (Air France KLM)
  • Qantas Frequent Flyer
  • Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer
  • TAP Miles&Go

There are two hotel partners:

  • IHG One Rewards
  • Wyndham Rewards

All conversion rates are 2:1 from HSBC points. This means that the IHG and Wyndham transfer rates are terrible value. A hotel point is generally worth about 2/3rd less than an airline mile, but HSBC requires 2 HSBC points irrespective of which partner you choose.

The World Elite £195 credit card also comes with airport lounge access via Priority Pass.  The World Elite card is less good for families who want lounge access than American Express Platinum as your HSBC card only gets the main cardholder into an airport lounge.

You can pay £60 to give your partner a supplementary card for a year to get them in, but there is no way to get children into airport lounges for free.  American Express Platinum, on the other hand, gets a family of four into a lounge.

You also get comprehensive travel insurance as part of the HSBC Premier current account, which makes this an interesting alternative to The Platinum Card from American Express for couples or solo travellers.

Conclusion

HSBC Premier’s semi-regular annual Avios conversion bonus is on! If you had been waiting for this before you transferred any points, now is the time.

Remember that there is a ‘hard’ 3-year expiry on HSBC credit card points. If you have any coming up for expiry, this is one way of using them up.

Quite amusing how so many people think HSBC has devised a nefarious scheme to hoodwink them. For clarity: this offer runs once every year since time began. It never shows the additional bonus Avios but they ALWAYS post quite soon afterwards. No test transfers are required. Anyone still in doubt, I am prepared to underwrite their potential losses for a modest commission …

    • Steve says:

I don’t think anyone believes HSBC is hoodwinking them – they are just remarking how bizarre this promotion is in that it is invisible through official channels. I have checked everywhere across my desktop online banking and mobile app and across HSBC rewards pages, and if there’s any information there it’s absolutely buried because I can’t see it. No banners, nothing. When I go to redeem rewards, there’s no mention of a bonus. Even when I google I can’t see anything other than this HfP article – in the comments of which I found the linked PDF.
Let’s face it, it’s always good to read the T&Cs from the source to make sure you’re following the correct steps and not missing any gotchas. Quite reasonable for people to be concerned before making large transfers given how HSBC has (not) promoted this.

      • Red Flyer says:

Banner on my HSBC app when I log in and checked balance 5 mins ago.

        • TGLoyalty says:

Yup and like others it’s obviously set to pop up once in a while so not to be intrusive but I had it this morning and the link to the T&Cs have been posted.

      • KayR says:

Yes Steve! Been saving these points for ages and the complete absence of info’s, banners, emails etc – other than HFP article is disconcerting! The promotion definitely popped up on the app this morning but has not been seen since. It’s like a portal to avios heaven that only opens when the planets are lined up!

        • TGLoyalty says:

Do you think it’s going to pop up every time you log in? That’s not how the other banner ads work so why would this one be different?

      • Hbommie says:

Do the chatbots not know about the bonus?

    • Harry T says:

It’s literally in the app if people would just scroll down a bit!

    • Nick says:

      So what say you now?

    • friendofbiffin says:

Not so amusing now it’s been more than 14 days since lots of us made a transfer and there’s still no sign of any bonus points

  • Red Flyer says:

Sorry O/T but Avios related – if I buy a cash ticket Manchester to Casablanca with Royal Air Maroc, is it possible to upgrade from economy to business using Avios?

    • Rob says:

      No

      • Red Flyer says:

Is avios redemption phone only Rob, as 2 business showing as available for redemption on my dates but app gives an error when I click on?

        • Rob says:

Has never worked since RAM joined oneworld. Need to call. Note taxes are high.

        • Usman says:

Yes I have the same problem you will need to call BA to book

  • Pete says:

Looked several times and I’m not getting any mention of the 25% bonus. I’ve seen the t&c’s on here snd have no doubt it’s legit but quite strange to have a major brand like hsbc bury its offers for an itk club lol.

Anyway gambled. Transfer done. Hopefully topped up by 25% in the next 14 days or so. I’ll report back if it does/doesn’t for others.

Cheers Rob. I’ve got a little plan to avios my wee family to the big parks in Orlando business class in a few years. Can’t really justify dropping 10k+ on that but bouncing around credit card offers and collecting points until the kids are old enough makes it perfectly doable. Your website is brilliant for that. Cheers

    • Rob says:

One year they never mentioned it. No pop up, no email, nothing. Only HfP readers knew.

    • TW says:

Same here. No mention of anything, I got the Avios (2:1 ratio) already. Let’s see what happens next.

  • kate says:

Just moved 200 points and got 100 avoid. no 25% bonus

  • Mayfair Mike says:

Some really dumb people on these 3 pages so far. I hope this isn’t representative of the wider readership.

This offer always works. I actually learnt of it this time via the banner ad on the app. What do these avios penny pitchers want? A call from hsbc’s ceo to confirm they won’t renege on a scrappy 25pc points bonus?
    “Test transfers” ffs 😂🤦‍♂️

  • Mason says:

They will come, be patient people. This is my 3rd time doing this bonus and they always show up eventually.

  • Alix says:

I don’t know if there was this 14 days term in the past years. When I used this promotion in the previous few years, I always received bonus in a few hours if not instantly.
I did a test transfer a few days ago, only base points were received instantly; hope the bonus will show up in 14 days.

  • rajiv says:

I have transferred my points but the bonus points have not arrived, I hope they do eventually!
