A Radisson Blu hotel opens in Sheffield

Radisson Blu has just opened a hotel in Sheffield.

It is a brand new property (website here), developed behind a Victorian facade on Pinstone Street. It faces across to the Town Hall and Peace Gardens and, of course, to Accor’s Mercure hotel.

The hotel has 154 rooms and features a rooftop Indian restaurant and bar called Governor Gupta.

Radisson Blu Sheffield

The Sheffield hotel scene has never been great. The Crowne Plaza is a disgrace to the brand, being so bad that the adjacent Holiday Inn Express often sold for a higher rate – but that hotel is now closed, presumably block booked by the Home Office. The Hilton deteriorated into a Best Western. The Novotel is dull. My preferred choice in recent years has been the Mercure St Paul’s which is surprisingly decent, attached as it is to the Winter Garden.

Radisson is paying £2.5 million per year to lease the hotel from the local authority. Room rates are going to have to pick up sharply from their current £65 to £75 per night if the hotel is going to be profitable.

A quick bit of maths shows that, at 70% occupancy, it would need to charge £150 per night to generate £5m per year excluding VAT. This is before a single penny is spent on staffing, utilities etc. This ignores food and drink and functions revenue of course.

Remember that American Express Platinum cardholders get free Premium status in Radisson Rewards. The main benefit of this is to unlock ‘Discount Booster’ which gives you a deeper cash discount in return for a lower level of points earning. You can also transfer Membership Rewards points into Radisson Rewards at 1:3 although this makes little sense since Radisson devalued.

You can find out more, and book, here.

How to earn Radisson Rewards points and status from UK credit cards

How to earn Radisson Rewards points and status from UK credit cards (April 2025)

Radisson Rewards does not have a dedicated UK credit card. However, you can earn Radisson Rewards points by converting Membership Rewards points earned from selected UK American Express cards.

These cards earn Membership Rewards points:

Membership Rewards points convert at 1:3 into Radisson Rewards points which is a very attractive rate.  The cards above all earn 1 Membership Rewards point per £1 spent on your card, which converts to 3 Radisson Rewards points.

Even better, holders of The Platinum Card receive free Radisson Rewards Premium status for as long as they hold the card.  It also comes with Hilton Honors Gold, Marriott Bonvoy Gold and MeliaRewards Gold status.

We reviewed American Express Platinum in detail here. You can apply here.

Got a small business?

You can get free top-tier Radisson Rewards VIP status with the new Capital on Tap Pro Visa credit card for small business. Clck here to apply.

Booked the Sheffield Radisson for next May, with the Discount Booster, app-only rate including breakfast for ‘superior’ room (one up from basic) and it’s a refundable £137pn across five nights. Just hope it’s still going as a Radisson in 10 months time…

    • Roy says:

App-only rates and discount booster don’t stack AFAICT, as discount booster doesn’t reduce promotional rates When available, app-only rates are often lower than the cheapest discounted rate from discount booster, making discount booster a bit pointless.

My question is – if you book an app-only rate whilst discount booster is enabled, do you still get the reduced points earning, even though you’re not getting any additional cash discount?

      • Roy says:

The other con with discount booster is that it offers a discount of “up to 20%” when enabled, instead of the usual member discount of “at least 10%” you get just for being a member of Radisson Rewards. Spot the problem here? There’s no guarantee that the discount booster discount is any greater than the usual member discount.

When this first came in I spotted one hotel where the member discount and discount booster rates were exactly the same (both at 15% off the standard room price).

@Roy: Selecting random dates of 18-21 October 2024, logged-in as Premium member, non-cancellable room only:
App only rate + discount booser: £67.07
        App only rate: £74.52
        Non-member rate: £87.67

Tried to use Airport to take our luggage from one of the Heathrow hotels.

    Found it impossible to book.

Would have thought such a service would be well used to avoid hauling suitcases between terminals etc.

    • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

To be honest if you’ve hauled them to an airport hotel the extra haul to the terminal or between terminals is hardly onerous especially when it’s all step free and you can take trolleys almost to the platforms.

Plus they have minimum time periods before flights that they will collect from and if your at an airport hotel for just one night that makes it hard to comply with those.

      • jjoohhnn says:

But you could stay at an airport hotel, hand over luggage to airportr, head in to London for a meeting, then head back to the airport for your flight. Seems like it could be useful.

Spot on about Sheffield hotels. I grew up there. Looking forward to the new DT opening next month on Bramall Lane.

The Hampton by Hilton is my preferred choice in Sheffield. I remember what it was like before it was converted from a police station…..still feels weird seeing it as a hotel even though they did a great job!

    • ADS says:

were you a regular visitor when it was a police station?

did you tend to stay overnight?!

  • Matt says:

Talking of IHG, had an excellent “exclusive” offer yesterday. Book and stay 2 nights before 9th Sept and earn 20k bonus points.

  • HampshireHog says:

Sheffield city centre sadly seems to have taken a decided turn for the worse in recent years what with John Lewis closing and loads more street people. The city seems almost wholly reliant on the student population

    • Danny says:

Agreed. Sheffield city centre looks like a dump now. So many empty shop units and forgotten looking streets.

May look better when the council finally stops mucking about with the high street.

Didn’t this Radisson used to be a co-op?

      • Rob says:

        Rings a bell, yes.

        • Jonathan says:

Yes it was a row of shops and was a main bus street. Now the council have pedestrianised the area so good luck trying to get to the hotel in a car. Also it is a good trek away uphill from the train and bus stations.

  • Debord says:

Maybe I stayed in a recently refurbished room but the Crowne Plaza isn’t that bad at all. The breakfast/ dining room is quite pleasant also. I stayed in one of the Best Western rooms with a terrace looking over the canal and liked it. When I went back they gave me a standard room overlooking the car park and it was terrible. Mercure def the best in the city. Leonardo seems nice on the outside but the rooms aren’t very pleasant at all. Definitely not my favourite city to go to for work but I am excited about the Radisson.

    • Rob says:

Last time I stayed someone had punched a big hole in the wall and no-one had bothered to fix it. Was probably the final straw after about 20 stays. I remember when you could get the 1863 Suite for £99 at weekends though ….

  • Dev says:

Just booked the Voco in Belfast for 29,000 points for 1 night next week. I am taking my boy to the Titanic Museum … any ideas how far it is from it?

(And will let you know how I get on with the hotel itself!)
