News in brief:

Earns Avios at Gail’s bakeries

Gail’s has become the latest retailer to join the ‘in-store’ list of Avios partners.

Effective immediately, you will earn 5 Avios for every £1 you spend in a Gail’s store.

(If you’re not a Gail’s fan, French bakery group Paul is also an ‘in-store’ Avios partner at the same rate.)

To receive Avios, you need to register your credit or debit card number on the shopping.ba.com site. It may take a day or so to go live, but after that you will automatically receive Avios on every Gail’s purchase without having to lift a finger.

British Airways brings back its Bangkok Airways codeshare

Back in 2013, British Airways launched a codeshare arrangement with Bangkok Airways. When BA dropped flights to Thailand it went into hibernation, but it has now been relaunched.

British Airways resumes flights to Bangkok on 28th October, departing from London Gatwick. There will be three flights per week, increasing to five between January and March.

Under the codeshare deal, you can book flights from London Gatwick to:

  • Phuket, Thailand
  • Koh Samui, Thailand
  • Chaing Mai, Thailand
  • Phnom Penh, Cambodia
  • Siem Reap, Cambodia

…. on one ticket on ba.com, with an aircraft swap in Bangkok. You would be fully protected against any misconnections due to delays on the first leg.

You will receive Avios and tier points in British Airways Executive Club for the Bangkok Airways flight.

You can include a stopover in Bangkok if you wish.

Note that:

  • you cannot book Bangkok Airways flights on ba.com on a stand-alone basis – they must connect to a British Airways long haul flight

Applied for Silver Jay this morning and have been approved. Amex Platinum is the gift that keeps giving. I’m a frequent flier but don’t focus my flying on one airline, so it’s great to be able to get status via other means.

Can I now status match from RJ to any other airlines in useful ways?

  • occasionalranter says:

Just want to say a big thank you Rob and team for flagging the RJ status match thing. I signed up to IC Ambassador, matched the resulting IHG Plat to RJ Gold Sparrow, then have got GHA to status match IHG Plat to GHA Titanium, now sharing my Titanium status with a family member. Might be getting a bit complex to stay on top of, but we’ll see…
$350 spent, already more than recovered with free seat reservations on multiple CE and CW flights I had booked on BA for the next year, as I previously had no OW status.
Expecting to get great value from IC Ambassador and GHA Titanium, already got a use for the free weekend night in an IC lined up, and will be getting fab value from that GHA status when we have a big family meetup at a Kempinski in a few months.

    • Charlie says:

A good use of the Ambassador weekend rate is a room with lounge access (if you don’t happen to have lounge access through nights). A few good nice places from U.K. with reasonable rates and nice lounges: Budapest, Malta, Berlin, Vienna. Choose a complimentary drink. Pick up a fillet steak [45 EUR] at the restaurant with a nice complimentary glass of red wine. 30 EUR to pay plus tip. If you have any food and beverage vouchers (17 EUR each) – and this is the important bit: the hotel gets the full value of these. It is as though you are paying cash. Tip the bill by 5 EUR and you have a fillet steak, a nice glass of red wine, and 5 EUR tip covered with the Ambassador credit plus 2x food & beverage vouchers [although tips not always covered depending on country]. And the 2x food and beverage vouchers are about 50% of their face value if you used for points instead.

      • Occasional Ranter says:

I’m completely new to Ambassador, or to any status within IC or IHG. What are these credits and vouchers you speak of 🙂 ?

        • Charlie says:

With Ambassador, you receive a £15 credit towards your restaurant or bar bill per stay at an Intercontinental. With IHG, irrelevant of status, you receive food and beverage rewards if you stay more than 20 nights at any IHG hotel. So, at 20 nights: two £15 food and beverage rewards. At 30 nights, two more. At 40 nights: complimentary lounge access and five more food and beverage rewards. So, if you can stay 40 nights in a calendar year, you’ll receive lounge access for current and following year (at most CPs and ICs), plus nine x £15 food and beverage rewards.

        • Charlie says:

And If you can stay 70 nights in a year, which I should just about make this year, then lounge access for an additional year, diamond status (there will likely be far fewer diamonds in 2025 than 2024), plus a total of twenty-four £15 food and beverage awards. Or as I like to call them: 12 fillet steak awards. 🙂

      • Jack says:

How did you match GHA to IC Ambassador?

  • Lee says:

Hi I signed up for Royal Sparrow (via IHG Ambassador) Monday. Got status match confirmed Tues but couldn’t select BA seats for free as of yesterday. But now today I can (so just picked my CW seats to MLE for $149 rather than £400), even though my RoyalClub dashboard doesn’t yet show the GoldSparrow Status.
So don’t necessarily wait till RoyalClub shows your status, just keep trying on BA manage my booking (it didn’t take 5 days)
    And once again thanks Rob.

  • Ian says:

Do you have to do anything to match Royal Sparrow to BAEC? Does your BAEC account show the appropriate level? i.e. Bronze/Silver
    Thanks

    • Rhys says:

Royal Sparrow isn’t matched to BAEC. But you use your Royal Sparrow membership number on oneworld bookings to get the status benefits. Your BA status will NOT change.

      • Chrisasaurus says:

And – crucially – you won’t earn BA tier points when actually using the status

        • Russell says:

You can do, if you switch the booking back to BAEC in the lounge before you fly using the FinnAir trick that someone posted a few days ago

  • Dylan says:

Seems like the website to sign up for Royal Club has been down all day 🙃

  • Billy says:

Just to be clear, my new status with RJ cannot be matched to my BA account but instead it can be applied to individual BA bookings to realise the benefits per booking?

  • Lee says:

Hi Got the status match and used it for free seat selection on flights to MLE next Feb. But trying to do the same for a Tenerife reward flight in CE next month doesn’t work? Finnair manage my booking doesn’t recognise the BA booking ref (but BA manage my booking does) Any ideas please?
