A positive suggestion for improving the British Airways American Express cards

To give British Airways and American Express credit, they have never stood still when it comes to the benefits on the two British Airways American Express cards.

Whilst these changes have not always been positive (eg the constant fee increases), many of them have genuinely improved the product. This includes the ability to open up additional reward availability in Club World for British Airways redemptions when using a companion voucher, letting you use your companion voucher on Aer Lingus and Iberia and letting solo travellers fly for half Avios.

You can see the current features in our British Airways Premium Plus American Express review here and our free British Airways American Express review here.

There is one change that I still feel is overdue, however.

How to improve the British Airways Premium Plus American Express credit card

(Before I go on, long term readers may recognise that I ran a version of this article 18 months ago. It had absolutely zero impact (!) but I am happy to give the idea another shove. Like our long running campaign last decade to bring in a status hold for new parents, we often get there in the end.)

Here’s the problem ….

Both my wife and I have our own Premium Plus cards, meaning we generate 2 x 2-4-1 companion vouchers each year. Because we have two children, this works well as it covers a family holiday.

Whilst the renewal dates on the two cards differ by three months, we try to time our spend so that we trigger the vouchers at roughly the same time.

The problem is that we can hit the voucher target very quickly these days, for better or worse. We are normally at around £9,000 of spending after three months.

But we don’t want to trigger our vouchers after three months ….

Here’s the snag. I want to delay triggering my companion vouchers for as long as possible.

I try to ensure that I have two unused vouchers and a decent pile of Avios constantly available, in case British Airways open up an attractive new route and I can grab seats for peak weeks. However, we already have two unused vouchers in the bank – we don’t need any more for now.

What this means is …. our two British Airways American Express Premium Plus cards go into a drawer when we get close to £10,000.

How to improve the British Airways American Express credit card

(I tend to stop at £9,000 because I don’t want to risk missing out on a good cashback offer on my card. It would be galling if I got, say, a ‘£100 back on £300 of Hilton spend’ offer but couldn’t take advantage because it would force me to trigger my voucher early.)

Where is the value in this for British Airways and American Express? I end up moving our family spending to other cards, even though I would be perfectly happy to keep picking up 1.5 Avios per £1 on my Premium Plus card.

There seems to be a very simple answer to this problem

In November 2024, the spend required to trigger a companion voucher on a British Airways American Express card will rise to £15,000. This will force me to use my card more, but using a stick rather than a carrot is not good business sense.

This is what should be done.

Your 2-4-1 Premium Plus companion voucher should be valid for the rest of your current Amex membership year plus two years.

At the moment it is valid for two years from the date of issue. I believe it should be for the rest of your current card year PLUS TWO YEARS. The expiry date should not be impacted by when you trigger the voucher.

If this rule was currently in place, I would happily keep spending on my Premium Plus card. Because it isn’t, I won’t.

I don’t see who loses under my proposed scenario. Cardholders don’t have to mess around juggling their spend to ensure they trigger their voucher to maximise its life. American Express and British Airways profit from additional card spend. Let’s get it done!

I have usually triggered the 2-4-1 fairly early in my Amex year, but I decided to bin it after triggering and using this year’s voucher. I went for the Amex Platinum as the introductory offers and benefits that I will actually use amount to about £1150, but it’s unlikely I’ll renew without the 40,000 MR and £400. I’ll have to start the 2-year-tango at that point. I was offered an incentive to keep the BAPP card- spend £15,000 more in three months (same 90 days that I have the £6000 Platinum target) and get a £50 credit!

Amex related. Has anyone faced issues turning on “remember this device” option in Amex app on iPhone? I’ve been trying to turn it on and it throws an error message “we were unable to remember your device. Try later”. I spoke to Amex, they raised a support case but as expected it led nowhere. The problem with this option turned off is that I have to enter a passcode every time I want to log on to the app. Any leads will be appreciated!

    • TGLoyalty says:

Worth checking how many devices you have remembered in the security section of your account. Delete them all then try again

    • Gustavo says:

I had something similar and contacted customer service and they weren’t really able to help me. Tried the old turn it on/off trusted device and it has been OK now.

      • Steph says:

        What trick is this?

        • TGLoyalty says:

Login via web browser to go account management then privacy & security the manage two step verification then forget every device and try to login via the app again. Find it takes two/3 logins before you might be asked to trust the device.

    • Clayton says:

As per @TGLOYALTY to check your not over your device limit. Also, if not tried already then delete the app from your iPhone and do a hard shutdown ( on Samsung’s that’s holding down the power button for 8+ seconds & not tapping the shutdown tile on screen but Google your iPhones procedure.)

Give it a minute or two. Restart device. Try to force an app store app update ( Google). Won’t matter if there isn’t one. You’re just creating an instance where your device checks itself & requests a store error report ( like magic and in the blink of an eye).
Install it again and login. After passing 1st app handshake close device, restart and see if that has removed the device flag AMEXs end & away you go if so.

Alternatively phone CS 5-8 times a day, 4-5 days in a row and ask “have you found a fix yet?” By day 3 someone will take steps to escalate things so as to avoid them & their colleagues having to tell you the same thing for the 8th time that day. (( Obviously that’s a bit douche’y so don’t actually do it…. ….unless your still in the same boat say a month from now 😆)

  • Alan says:

    Yep …. great suggestion

  • Erico1875 says:

What Is like to see is the ability to earn a 2nd voucher within the card year.
Possibly with the option to roll it over into the next card year, even if the threshold was raised for the roll over option.
The earning rate means you are losing 30% avios by switching to another card,( except for Barclaycard + , however their voucher has much less value than an Amex 2 4 1 imo)
High spenders , and BA Amex would definitely benefit

  • flyforfun says:

Just cancelled my BAPP card. Offered 10K bonus points if I stayed and spent 5K in 6 months. Have opened the rewards card so I can redeem my vouchers over the next 2 years. When my time is done I’ll wait for a points offer to get a new BAPP card. Maybe… Will depend on how many Avios I have left!!

  • G says:

A simple but not perfect way to implement this would be just to make it 30 months expiry from triggering the voucher.

  • MACH1 says:

A very good suggestion and one that I also encounter approx 9-10 months into spend year. Like you I switch to a non-Amex card to restrict spending on the Amex card.

  • Peter Johnson says:

BA Amex for me does not get used outside of the UK simply because of the 2.99% fx charge for non uk spend. I use another card with no fx charges for more than 15K GBP equivalent when I am overseas. Removing this FX surcharge would be beneficial for AMEX but yup would have to convincingly the bean counters. With best intentions
