How does the British Airways status extension for new parents work?

It seems that a lot of people don’t know that, since 2017, British Airways has offered a status extension for new mums and new dads.

I know people don’t know, because I mentioned it in passing in an article yesterday and received multiple emails from readers who had never heard of it, wanting more information.

This is partly our fault, because it turns out that we haven’t written about ‘new parent’ status extensions since 2017. Part of the reason is that BA suspended them during Covid, on the grounds that it was extending status for everyone anyway.

Let’s run through it again.

British Airways status extension for new parents

Whilst too late for us, this is a change that I was very pleased to see introduced. I saw my wife lose her British Airways status, twice, after we had our children and then having to restart as a Blue member after her maternity leave.

How does the British Airways status extension work?

You will be eligible to have your Bronze, Silver or Gold status in British Airways Executive Club extended following the birth or adoption of a baby.  This offer is valid for both parents.

You can see confirmation of what I’ve written on the relevant ‘status benefits’ page of ba.com. For example, Silver members can see it here.

Here’s the wording from the Silver page of ba.com:

You can apply to keep your British Airways Silver status if you’re planning to take maternity / paternity / adoption leave, even though you’ll be taking fewer flights during this time. Also, if you enrol your child as part of your household account we’ll welcome them with a gift of 1,000 Avios.

To extend the validity of your card for an additional period, all you need to do is send your documentation to us at baby@ba.com. Once we’ve verified your documents, we’ll send you an email confirming the renewal of your status and walk you through how to enrol your child into the Executive Club as part of a household account.

In terms of relevant documentation, BA means (from the Executive Club T&C):

Members will need to provide a letter from their doctor, a birth certificate or documentation relating to the adoption or paternity leave and send it to baby@ba.com. Members who are taking Shared Parental Leave can also apply, subject to providing the relevant documentation.

The other key points are:

  • you can request an extension twice in any five year period (for different children, obviously)
  • anyone who has complimentary British Airways status (eg has been gifted status by a Gold Guest List member) cannot receive an extension
  • you will also receive 1,000 bonus Avios if you add your baby to a Household Account within six months of requesting the extension
  • you will continue to earn Avios and tier points on whatever flying you do, and if you unexpectedly end up earning enough tier points to be promoted, this will still happen. Your extension to your previous tier will end at that point.

PS. Virgin Atlantic offers a similar benefit, although it isn’t explained in detail anywhere on their website. This is all I can find:

If you’re having a little one we will cover any Tier Points that are outstanding to renew your status from the date of when your parental / adoption leave starts. Just get in touch with us.

  • Hope says:

Unfortunately extending the membership status didn’t work. Multiple emails were sent to BA, following instructions from an earlier article. BA took months to respond and by the time they received our compliant our membership tier had been downgraded. The last email we sent to BA was in February and we still haven’t received a response.

  • Chris says:

Contacted BA multiple times about the 1,000 bonus last year for my daughter, not sure I ever got them.

  • SH says:

I thought I had read on FT forums that emails to this address were no longer being replied to, with users speculating that the policy was now void as the end dates of all BA Tier Point years have been harmonised?

    • Thegasman says:

I’ve successfully received two extensions in last 3 years with nothing more than a 2 line email & scanned copy of birth certificate sent to baby@ba.com. I think I read they only process at the end of your status year so I waited till final month on both occasions & got response within a week.

  • Matt Price says:

Does anyone know how this works with the new status year change?

    • Willie says:

They gave me the extra bit between year-end and April.

So, for me with a December year end, effectively got a comp’d 16 months instead of 12 months.

  • PGR says:

Be warned they take forever to acknowledge the email, and in the case of my second didn’t even reply at all.

  • Chris says:

My recent experience was to email (in May, after my baby was born in March, and with Gold status due to expire in November), only to get a reply about 2 weeks later saying “Please get in touch nearer to your status expiry date and we will consider your request then”. Not exactly helpful / clear; now I have no idea if it will be extended or not (and, if so, whether to next November or to next April in line with the new TP year).

It does feel like the whole thing could be a bit clearer.

    • SteveJ says:

Agreed, they make a big song and dance about this ‘benefit’ but their communication from that address is piss poor. And it would be useful for them to mention you should only apply closer to the time so new parents aren’t wasting their time.

  • Frances demoulin says:

Hi this related to status extensions but not maternity/paternity related. Sadly my husband was diagnosed with cancer back in February and we were not able to travel. We are hoping to be able to travel once his treatment is completed. I wanted to approach BA about either extending or renewing our status. Our current year ends November 8 and there is no way we could make up the points to retain silver by then. Would it be worth sending an email to the address on the article or perhadoes anyone know a better contact number or email. I am not hopeful they would entertain it but nothing ventured nothing gained!

    • Rantallion says:

Definitely worth asking. My wife had her status extended by a year last year as she couldn’t fly due to ill health. She spoke with the Exec Club and they told her where to send her request, which had to include NHS documentary evidence of her condition. Confirmation of the extension was received within a week. They’ll only consider the request at the end of the membership year, and not before.

    • NvT1115 says:

This is possible and my fiancee (now wife) was extended for a year when we abandoned a trip due to a family bereavement. I would add though it was at the end of the collection year

  • Occasionalmiler says:

Talking of children, we flew CE yesterday the food was fine for adults but not for children. They mentioned that we could have pre-ordered a child’s meal. Not sure if this is new or just something we have been unaware of.

    • blenz101 says:

I’ve never known CE food to not be suitable for all ages. What was it you were served that a child couldn’t eat. It’s usually pasta, curry, cottage pie, salad, English breakfast, sandwiches etc.

If you had wanted them served fish fingers or chicken nuggets rather than an adult main then I think the crew were right to suggest you order a child meal.

      • Occasionalmiler says:

You are right the food is fine for all ages. It just didn’t pass the taste of my kids!

    • ACK says:

It is a think, I have also pre-ordered our food for the next trip on J with our toddler. I then went to FT and read up on it, and then cancelled the pre-order. I can’t remember the specifics now, but I think it’s basically re-heated junk food. I’m not saying the normal food is michelin quality, but for kids I think the thread mentioned chicken nuggets or something like that.
