Amex Platinum cards in Germany now have a cap on Priority Pass use

Whilst many holders of Priority Pass airport lounge cards in the UK complain that they find it difficult to get access (which is why American Express Platinum is currently trialling free reservations until the end of 2024), it seems that there is no problem in Germany.

(This isn’t a surprise – the UK and US are the only countries where you should have a realistic concern about being turned away from a Priority Pass lounge.)

German holders of The Platinum Card who applied from 2nd September are having their lounge access capped.

From this week, new cardholders are restricted to 50 Priority Pass visits per year if you get your Priority Pass from a German-issued Amex Platinum card.

There are some odd quirks though:

  • the cap only applies to lounges accessed via Priority Pass – lounges which you access by showing your Platinum card (Lufthansa, Plaza Premium, Centurion etc) are not included
  • the cap covers the main and supplementary Platinum cardholders and any guests they bring in without charge – but there is no way of keeping track of how many visits you have done between you
  • the cap of 50 is not, it turns out, a firm cap – it is the level at which American Express is now allowed to terminate your Priority Pass membership, but it many not necessarily do so

Whilst 50 lounge visits seems like a lot, it is just six trips per year for a family of four which uses a lounge at both ends of their journey. That said, the ability to use Plaza Premium lounges outside the cap would remove some of the sting if such a rule was brought in here.

  • BJ says:

Any advice on GLA PP please? I see Lomond does not allow walk-in; can I pre-book this for 2 and then access using 2 passes from one amex Gold card? Thanks!

    • Bernard says:

If you’re not Amex and have full PP, the restaurant option with £18 credit was pretty good at Glasgow. I’d skip the lounge for that when I return.

If you’re Amex – bad luck and oook at HSBC World Elite instead

      • BJ says:

Thanks, I’m trying to use 2 of 4 passes on PRGC, according to PP Lomond (prebooked) and Upper Deck should be possible in theory.

        • Numpty says:

Lomond is a nice enough lounge, Upper Deck; I’d save the lounge pass for somewhere else if it’s one of the free Gold card passes. I’d go to the restaurant, I’d skip The Beardmore (fake Wetherspoons).

          • BJ says:

Thanks, I still have 4 passes to use and only GLA and LUS to use them before card year ends so using them anywhere is better than nothing. We cannot use the amex-based
PP at restaurants and stores unless I’m missing something.

      Earn more. Fly more?

    • Thiru says:

Had same problem in Toronto refuse to accept saying lounge was full

  • Smithyse16 says:

Can never get in at the Stansted lounge and when I tried to book online several weeks ahead I was told the lounge was already fully booked. Funnily enough, when I tried to make a dummy cash booking the lounge was no longer full…

The lady on reception at the lounge told us many people have had similar issues when trying to pre-book using Priority Pass.

    • JPa says:

You usually never get in straight away at Stansted but when they add you to the virtual queue I have always been called back anywhere from 1 to 10 mins. Don’t assume you will not get in quickly when joining the queue

      • babyg says:

Virtual Qing on a Thursday eve at Stansted is usually 45mins plus, meaning I get about 15mins before I need to leave… So sadly I pre-book if flying from stansted now.

    • BBbetter says:

Why is that funny? Why would any business turn away full fare paying customers in favour of a lower paying customer?

      • Rob says:

And EVERYONE pays more than PPass – cash bookers, airlines, On The Beach, Holiday Extras, DragonPass …

      • Jonny says:

OP doesn’t literally mean funny, they mean disingenuous to say the lounge is full when evidently it’s not

    • Stephen says:

Anyone have the virtual queue link for Stansted lounge? Would be good to enter the queue when going through security

  • mrd says:

Is this a telling sign of what’s to come for the UK Amex Platinum card? I know changes are on the horizon, is this one of them?

    • Rob says:

Doubt anyone in the UK manages 50 visits! It would only mean that everyone decamped to Plaza Premium at Heathrow, Gatwick and Edinburgh anyway, which is outside the cap.

      • tw33ty says:

Plaza edi are starting to limit pp a lot more often, even when only 1/3 full.

I got in the other day with amex platinum, after being told no to pp.

        • Alan says:

Ooh, interesting they still allowed Plat in that situation, that’s potentially good news – I thought they treated Plat and PP as the same.

          • tw33ty says:

I only tried platinum to be cheeky, as I was desperate to avoid aspire lounge, and was very surprised when the lovely lady said yes they would let me in.

The staff at plaza edi are great, and it’s my preferred PP lounge, I find certain aspire staff very rude to people, not to me, but they are with others, plus the tip signs when it’s self service in aspire are poor taste.

      • William says:

According to award wallet I have made 30 flights this year so I’m over the cap. I may be slightly under 50 pp visits if I count the times I couldn’t get in at AMS or MAN

      • r* says:

Its not 50 visits tho, if you have two people thats only 25, Ive certainly gone over that.

        • Danny says:

Tips in a British lounge?! I bet it only took a few Americans wafting fivers around for those signs to go up…

      • Matt says:

I’m at 34 visits so far this year (excluding guests). Wife is probably at 10 visits on my supplementary card so far. Would definitely be the end of the gravy train for me.

  • Myriad says:

“ it is just six trips per year for a family of four which uses a lounge at both ends of their journey”
I wonder if I aspire to have this problem

    • Throwawayname says:

Just three trips if they involve a connection each (at the end of the day, if you are staying near the departure airport and/or can quickly get there by train, you don’t have to hang about airside for any real length of time).

  • Bernard says:

Is Amex actively testing pilots on how unthinkingly loyal its customers are?
It is astonishing how poor its offer now is in U.K./Europe. Nothing like the US product.
Not hard to believe an ex BA man is involved: chasing mediocrity at high prices for short term profit while eroding the brand.

    • Daniel says:

Yes totally agree, I have move my business card to Capital One Tap and my personal to BA Amex.

Living the north west very limited with BA but lucky I can use that 241 on business class flights direct new New York Aer Lingus… or via Dublin.

No need for the Amex plat rip off card… FX fee is rip off compared to NA Amex cards

  • John says:

Would gladly pay three times the going rate for a properly exclusive experience with excellent food and a couple of premium drinks, clean toilets and no misbehaving children or adults.

    • Throwawayname says:

You mean paying £126 for one person to get into a lounge? I don’t have any kind of lounge membership as I typically access lounges with my airline status. I had a Jet2 flight a couple of months ago and the comical Aspire lounge was £42. I had read lots of stories about mayhem at that airport (BHX), so I felt that I had to go earlyish and pay for lounge access. In the end I managed to find a discount code or something and got in for £36 which still felt like a rip off (fortunately the food wasn’t as bad as I feared so I did at least get a full meal out of it).

    • No longer Entitled says:

Excellent. Can you fly from Manchester? They have the lounge for you: Aether.

  • Jason says:

All the lounges at MAN are now pre-bookable via PP (with a very reasonable price to upgrade to the 1903 lounge – nice for premium drinks if flying later in the day). I’ve had no issue getting a lounge this year. A 50 visit limit would not impact me.

    • Daniel says:

Really very limited benefit for Amex Plat card nowadays in the UK… FX fee and aimed that cardholders that would mostly be flying business class… when I travel this card won’t even leave my wallet before leaving the house before travelling.

The car hire excess wavier is limited on low value cars!

No benefits if you live outside that south west.

  • ADS says:

“the cap covers the main and supplementary Platinum cardholders and any guests they bring in without charge – but there is no way of keeping track of how many visits you have done between you”

why can’t PP track the combined visits – aren’t the PP of the original and supplementary cardholder linked?

    • TGLoyalty says:

The PP app shows your visit history so you can track where you went and how many people went in.

Each card has an account so it’s completely possible to find the answer it’s just not easy as seeing x complimentary visits in 2024
