How many Virgin Points do you need to fly to a particular city?

This article is Part 2 of our updated ‘Virgin Redemption University’ series. Further articles will follow on different aspects of spending Virgin Points. We ran a ‘work in progress’ version of these articles last year and then refined them after reader feedback. This year you are getting the polished versions up front!

If you want to earn more Virgin Points, our review of the Virgin Atlantic Reward+ Mastercard credit card is here (18,000 bonus points) and our review of the free Virgin Atlantic Reward Mastercard credit card is here (3,000 points bonus).

How many Virgin Points do you need to fly to ....?

Before we look at how to redeem Virgin Points for flights (Part 3 and Part 4 of this series), we want to get the points pricing information out of the way.

Taxes and charges are mentioned briefly but will be covered in more detail in a future article.

We will look at how to work out upgrade pricing in a future article.

How much are reward flights using Virgin Points?

Virgin Atlantic has two pricing charts – one for its own flights below and one for flights on SkyTeam and other partner airlines. A separate article on SkyTeam partner redemptions will follow.

Unlike Avios flights, there is only one price for a Virgin Atlantic redemption. You cannot mix and match cash and points depending on how points-rich or cash-rich you feel at the time.

How many Virgin Points are Virgin Atlantic reward flights?

This chart lists Virgin Atlantic destinations alphabetically with pricing to / from London.  Prices are return – simply divide by two for one-way.

You can use the search bar at the top to search the table for a specific destination.

Shanghai, Nassau (Bahamas) and Providenciales (Turks & Caicos) are not listed as the routes have been dropped, although flights are still continuing for a while.

How many Virgin Points do you need to fly to ....?

It’s also possible to fly Virgin Atlantic between some Caribbean islands. These inter-island redemptions are only available in economy:

Inter-island flightsStandard economyPeak economy
Barbados to St Vincent4,5005,000
St Vincent to Barbados4,5005,000
Barbados to Grenada4,5005,000

What are the taxes and charges on Virgin Atlantic redemptions?

A few months ago we published a table of Upper Class taxes and charges – click here to read it.

You should expect to pay £1,000 return per person for an Upper Class flight to the United States, and between £800 and £900 for other routes.

Premium seats are around £550 whilst Economy seats are around £275 to the US and £375 elsewhere, return.

What are the peak and off-peak dates for flying Virgin Atlantic?

Virgin Atlantic lists peak and off-peak dates on this page of its website.

Confusingly, albeit logically, there are separate peak and off-peak dates for the Caribbean. (It was always odd how Avios charged peak pricing to, say, the Middle East in August but off peak pricing during the main tourist season from October to March!)

For non-Caribbean routes for the rest of 2024:

Coming up ….

The next two articles in this series will look at how to redeem Virgin Points for Virgin Atlantic flights on SkyTeam partner flights.

  • Throwawayname says:

It’s at least three charts – one for VS, one for AFKL, and one for the rest of Skyteam. I think that they may have yet more prices for ANA and DL, but I haven’t looked into redeeming with them.

    • Milaneser says:

VS pricing is a bit all over the place on Skyteam redemptions – particularly on AFKL when, for example, you start searching for connecting flights. It’s meant to be segment pricing but the points totals often don’t relate to what the chart (or logic) suggest they should be.

    • Rhys says:

See our follow-up articles over the coming days…

  • CamFlyer says:

I was looking at a VS redemption flight last week. VS showed no availability for a particular date and route, but AFKL showed nonstop availability on VS metal. I would have expected the opposite!

  • babyg says:

    Was it bookable via AFKL?

  • Sam says:

I’m 50/50 of whether to apply for this card although if I do, I’ll hold off until an increased SUB is on offer.
But did a dummy booking for feb half term to Dubai.
20,000 Virgin points + £254 (economy). So for us (family of 4) taxes element alone would be £1016. If you factor in the card fee: £1176

Flights with Gulf Air and Saudia to Dubai on the exact same dates (albeit indirect but reasonable connection timings): just over £1200.

Assuming there’s four seat availability on those dates, I’m struggling to work out where the actual saving is in having this card?

We’ve always had the BA cards as our internal legs from NCL are always covered (and ‘free’ for long haul redemptions).
With Virgin we don’t have that option.

    • Rob says:

As always, there is virtually no value in redeeming miles for economy long-haul flights, except at super peak periods. Having the voucher won’t change that.

You get cancellation flexibility of course.

    • Throwawayname says:

You do have the free connections if you fly AFKL long haul!

  • NicktheGreek says:

With the lack of engagement on your Virgin content do you sometimes wonder why you bother?

I can’t see the appeal to switch any spend to earn Virgin points instead of MR of Avios.

At those points rates, with the cash co-pay I hardly consider I’m missing out on anything special here.

    • Rob says:

We sell a lot of their credit cards, they are good to us in terms of invites, Shai / Corneel / Juha make themselves available to us and they create a lot of content opportunities. Keeps BA on their toes too …

      • NicktheGreek says:

A thoughtful response. And goes to show the full picture is not always as it would appear from the outside.

There’s no doubt the UK market would be worse without them. Good stuff.

  • RichT says:

Hi NicktheGreek, it does take a bit of work (perhaps more than Avios) but good things can be had. I’ve booked two Upper Class returns to Barbados next Jan/Feb for two vouchers, 2×55,000 points and £1,638. The cost of these flights in cash was c£10,000 albeit that I would not have paid that much cash. As an aside we are in The Hilton at Needhams Point for 17 nights and I’ve only paid for one night at $387 instead of $11,000.
A couple of phone calls at 05:00 was very much worth setting the alarm.

  • RobH not Rob says:

Happy to have Virgin vouchers and points as a complementary option alongside BA.

This university reminder is welcome and I’m sure I’ll pick up a few points of note that have passed me by.

    Nice work hfp.

  • Graviation says:

I don’t think the Virgin Shops Away shopping portal has been mentioned yet as a way of earning points. It’s basically the equivalent of BA’s e-store and uses the same platform as the Emirates Skywards shopping portal. I find it more reliable than BA’s e-store. However, I appreciate having mentioned it, even more confusion will be created for some, sitting as it does alongside other Virgin ‘products’ like Virgin Red, Flying Club etc!
