EXCLUSIVE: British Airways cancels return to Kuala Lumpur with four weeks notice

British Airways was due to restart two routes to Asia this winter – Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur.

Bangkok is going ahead, with flights starting on 28th October.

Kuala Lumpur, which was due to launch on 10th November, seems to have hit the buffers.

Earlier this afternoon the flights were showing as bookable:

…. but five minutes ago it changed to this:

No flights are available until 1st April 2025.

Cancelling a route with less than a months notice is clearly not great news for anyone. However, with oneworld partner Malaysia Airlines offering double-daily flights from Heathrow, it should be possible to get most people on a same-day alternative.

Our 2022 review of the Malaysia Airlines service in business class is here.

Qatar Airways is also likely to be an option due to BA’s joint venture agreement. In fact, it is possible that BA tries to push Qatar Airways as its preferred alternative.

Note that it will take BA a few days to hammer out a formal rebooking arrangement with Malaysian. If you call today you will be offered an indirect alternative.

Why have the flights been pulled?

British Airways told us:

We’re disappointed that we’ve had such to make further changes to our schedule as we continue to experience delays to the delivery of engines and parts from Rolls-Royce – particularly in relation to the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines fitted to our 787 aircraft.

We’ve taken this action because we do not believe the issue will be solved quickly, and we want to offer our customers the certainty they deserve for their travel plans. We’ve apologised to those affected and are able to offer the vast majority a flight the same day with British Airways or one of our partner airlines.

We continue to work closely with Rolls-Royce to ensure the company is aware of the impact its issues are having on our schedule and customers, and seek reassurance of a prompt and reliable solution.

In terms of ‘why KL?’, competition is probably part of it. Malaysia Airlines offers a decent product on the route which also allows flyers to earn Avios and British Airways Executive Club tier points.

BA’s shortage of A380 aircraft is also likely to be a factor. As we have covered, the fleet is proving very unreliable.

Kuala Lumpur was scheduled as a daily service on a Boeing 787-9, which was a heavy commitment in terms of aircraft. Pulling what was always going to be a low yield route is a relatively low cost way of building some resilience in the schedule.

Let’s hope the 1st April 2025 date is firm.

As many are travelling to KL as a means to get to SE Asia has anyone tried to ask for Finnair to BKK or SIN? Just a thought.

  • Goonface says:

Finally some success! I’ve got a CW with BA voucher return LHR to KUL and on the 2nd time of calling BA this week, I have just managed to get rerouted on QR via Doha both ways. I have had to pull forward outbound by 1 day but I’ve retained Business and flight class appears as J and C.

Actually had a really helpful assistant that did not try and force me through SIN (like the first time) but I wasn’t offered any direct routing via MH.

  • cercwc76 says:

Over the weekend someone shared a website listed all the airlines with various types of plane they are currently operating. Somehow it appeared gone missing from the thread now and cant be found. Can anyone reshare it.

On a separate note, it is noticed that india call centre would be more than willing to find seat from Qatar airways to reroute you compared to UK call centre, which based on different calls with them over the last few days.

    • Goonface says:

That makes sense for me then. I probably called once UK call centre went offline!

    • sloth says:

that incorrect ime…first time I tried I got an Indian agent who muddled up his unhelpfulness and waffled any old rubbish to get me off the line…second attempt was an Indian agent via chat who whilst very slow (and was clearly operating several chats at once and making a mess of it as he kept typing random responses into my chat in error…) was in the end helpful in that I got rebooked onto QR with the routing I wanted. its literally luck of the draw

    • Metty says:

@cercwc76 was the site you saw aerolopa dot com?

  • Ben says:

I’ve booked PE on an upgrade and tried to talk the live chat agent into upgrading me into business with no avail but I have received confirmation that people should be able to be booked onto Qatar Airways. They wanted to book me into economy but I wanted to be upgrade to business but I’ll have to call their upgrade number, I’ve been recommended ‘You can call us on 0344 493 0747 option 2 (calls charged at local rate) Daily 08:00 – 20:00 ‘, does any have a ‘better’ line with reduced queue and higher chance of it going my way?

    Thanks

    • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

They will not upgrade you for free.

      • Ben says:

Sorry forgot to mention, I did try for free just to try my luck but asked the live chat agent how much avios it would be but they said you have to call the number, they couldn’t quote me either

    • cercwc76 says:

I used the same no too as no status.

    • Bubs23 says:

We were on PE from KUL-LHR. We have accepted economy in Malaysian as travelling in under 6 weeks.

We’ll put a downgrade reimbursement claim in once the flight has been completed.

Travelling with an infant so the priority was to get a direct flight, regardless of class. Original booking used Avios, Cash, and 241 CV. They offered QR via Doha but I insisted on MH1/MH2 combo as they were the same timings as the original BA

  • Mark Z says:

Booked BA34 with Barclays upgrade voucher. I called BA and chatted with the chat agent twice earlier this week, got told rerouting via QR requires commercial availability. Tried my luck again with online chat around 8am and the agent offered my desired QR flights and booked under R class that I was able to select seats. Certainly worth keep trying!

  • Mrs Mac says:

BA now offering flights with Malaysian for cancelled KUL passengers. I’ve just changed my booking, was speaking to agent when he received email, it has literally just gone live.

  • SamG says:

    https://www.britishairways.com/travel-partner-connect/disruptions

Allowing Malaysian Airlines direct as well as connections off of BA to SIN/HKG/BKK (which may be preferable for those booked in WT+)

  • Alesa says:

I’ve just called and been told they can’t put through the rebooking until tomorrow, even though they have the confirmation of the deal now. So frustrating!!!

    • qc says:

      I don’t why – we’ve just rebooked on MH1 – so it is possible.
      Call again.

    • Alesa says:

I called back, spoke to someone different (in India) and after checking that they could re-issue the ticket as it was a reward/241 booking they have booked us on MH1, same day, same (Business Class) and leaving just 40 minutes later. Phew!! I have no idea why the earlier agent told me I had to call back tomorrow. I even asked if he was sure and he said yes, but the good news was that no one else would be able to re-book either! What is with these agents? Thanks to this email and thread for helping me to know what to do and to keep persevering. Very grateful!
