If you want a weekend break with a difference, there is something waiting for you in Tenby in Pembrokeshire.

Apple Camping has a unique USP – each of its glamping units is, to put it mildly, unique. One is called ‘The UFO Experience’ ….

The company has now added an ex-Etihad A320 aircraft to its roster, image above. To quote:

Spend the night in an Etihad A320 - in Tenby

This aviation marvel has been thoughtfully converted into a self-contained sanctuary that retains its majestic air travel charm while introducing comforts and luxuries for a stay that’s anything but ordinary.

As you step inside, you’re greeted by an open-plan living space, ingeniously crafted within the original fuselage. Here, two single beds and a convertible sofa bed promise restful slumbers, complemented by the cozy ambiance of a space that’s been both newly carpeted and thoroughly insulated—ensuring warmth and comfort no matter the season. The interior boasts a fully-equipped kitchen, ingeniously integrated amidst authentic aircraft features, including operational cabin doors, Etihad and Air France branded storage, and aisle dolly trolleys, blending culinary convenience with a dash of novelty.

Our Airbus extends its allure to the lavatories, where one has been transformed into a modern shower with hot water, while the other maintains its original purpose, complete with charming details like Arabic signage, a nod to its globetrotting past. The living area, bathed in natural light from 26 windows equipped with original pull-down blinds, invites relaxation with a coffee table and Freeview T.V., all under the soft glow of converted overhead compartment lights.

Step outside to discover a haven designed for alfresco enjoyment and intimate starlit evenings. The aircraft’s front opens onto a deck with expansive double-glazed windows and a glass door, leading to a west-facing outdoor area ideal for savoring the sunset with a drink in hand. For privacy or shade, blackout blinds are ready to deploy at a moment’s notice. Nearby, the ‘Arabian Nights’ outdoor seating area, sheltered and adorned with a desert mural, offers a secluded spot for dining or unwinding, enveloped in the captivating ambiance of distant lands.

It is priced at £199 per night (£50 surcharge for one night stays) and you can book here.

Jet2 is a great airline for family package holidays.

Their MAN-GVA or GVA-MAN flights during ski season are pretty well-matched price wise against easyJet. I have used them multiple times (10+ each season) either direction and generally find the service a decent step up from U2 and a bigger step up from FR. Obviously a short flight so comfort not really a major factor, but their staff are definitely a higher calibre in general.
Also much more relaxed re hand baggage with a decent size (big enough for ski boots) included as standard.

Living and working in Malta and looking for a cheap one way flight to Birmingham I recently took my first, and last, Jet2 flight a couple of weeks ago. Apart from the incessant announcements/noise, the most irritating thing was landing at Birmingham and finding all Jet2 passengers have to go through a separate immigration channel and get checked by Border Force. Why we couldn’t simply use the normal e-gates I have no idea. So spent 20 minutes or so needlessly queuing. Maybe Jet2 think they’re offering a better service by using their own immigration channels

Booked an “Indulgent Escapes” package last year. Scoff all you like at the idea of a Low Cost Carrier offering “luxury” holidays (my expectations were not enormous) but it was a level of customer service that put many supposedly genuine luxury outfits to shame.

A single example of a repeated experience: IE includes private transfers. Approaching Jet2 private transfer desk at destination. Assumed there would be a queue and a wait. Zero queue. Staff member took one look at me as I was approaching, and before I even spoke said “ah good afternoon, it’s Mr Squirrel isn’t it, XXXX here is your driver and your car is here waiting (outside 10 yards away); let me help you with your luggage…

    Ryanair this ain’t.

As others have commented, they don’t really compete on price. I had to fly with them to Greece in the summer and didn’t have much change from £200 (incl. luggage), and that wasn’t even during the school holidays. As I paid another £40 or so for fast track and lounge access, it would have been cheaper to fly Lufthansa in business class, but I wasn’t prepared to lose my sleep for the sake of catching the 06:00 to FRA in order to make the connection.

They seem to employ their own ground staff in the UK, and they were super helpful. Seat padding was rather inadequate for a 4-hour flight, but other than that it was a good experience.

    • Throwawayname says:

(that was £200 one way in case it looks cheap to anyone! I returned on A3.)

  • Ironside says:

    Another thumbs up for Jet2.

No, they don’t provide the lap of luxury and yes it was moderately annoying to be stung for baggage when I thought it was included (apparently: only for Jet2 Holidays), but IME the flights are clean, well-organised, and on-time, the staff are friendly, and the whole operation appears slick and stress-free.

I also know a couple of their pilots, and their happiness at their employer is in marked contrast to the sole Ryanair pilot with whom we are acquainted. I don’t know about you, but I’d much rather have flight crew in a positive frame of mind!

  • Andrew says:

I’m a huge Jet2 fan! The whole operation seems to work well, IMHO, as they do so many things in-house incredibly well that other airlines outsource incredibly badly. The only downside is the guaranteed earworm from that Jess Glynne song.

  • ADS says:

“Thanks to @SeanM_1997 on X for the data”
