Hertz will match your Marriott Bonvoy hotel elite status

Marriott and Hertz have had a partnership for many years, although neither makes a big deal of it. You can see details on the Marriott website here.

As part of this, Hertz offers a status match to encourage Marriott Bonvoy elite members to try it.

This is what you get:

Hertz Marriott Bonvoy status match
  • Marriott Bonvoy Ambassador Elite members get Hertz President’s Circle
  • Marriott Bonvoy Titanium Elite members get Hertz Five Star
  • Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite members get a fast track offer to Hertz Five Star (get status with seven rentals in 12 months instead of the usual 10)

Given the number of other routes to getting Hertz status via airline, hotel and credit card partnerships, this offer doesn’t seem hugely generous. I appear to have Hertz President’s Circle status via my Accor Live Limitless Diamond status for example.

Not only is the match not very lucrative (there aren’t many Ambassador Elite members of Bonvoy), I’ve never been totally convinced about the value of car rental status.

The one upside is generally ‘skip the line’. Whenever I pick up a Hertz car in Hamburg, to visit my wife’s family, the desk has my name on a board telling me to go straight to a certain bay and take the car, no paperwork required.

The downside is often upgrades – you will get one, and you may not want it. Whilst few people would turn down a bigger airline seat or hotel room, a lot of people – including myself – aren’t delighted to find they’ve been given a car which is far longer and wider than they would normally drive.

If you have Platinum, Titanium or Ambassador status in Bonvoy, you can register for your Hertz status match here.

How to get FREE car rental status and other benefits via UK credit cards

How to get FREE car rental status and other benefits via UK credit cards (March 2025)

If you hire a car in the UK, you can get special benefits (discounts, upgrades, free additional drivers etc) if you have elite status with a car rental programme. You can get elite status for free via certain American Express cards.

The Platinum Card and American Express Business Platinum

The Platinum Card from American Express and American Express Business Platinum come with two free car hire status cards. Your supplementary Platinum cardholder can also receive status in their own right.

From Avis, you receive President’s Club status in Avis Preferred. This gets you up to 25% off standard rates, a free additional driver and a guaranteed one class upgrade. For weekend rentals you will receive a two class upgrade, subject to availability.

From Hertz, you receive ‘Five Star’ status in Hertz Gold Plus Rewards. This gets you up to 15% off standard rates, a free additional driver and a one class upgrade, subject to availability.

Hertz also offers Platinum cardholders a 4 hour grace period on rentals. Your final day is treated as 28 hours, so a 1pm pick up with a 5pm return the following day is only charged as one day, not two days. We wrote about the Hertz / Platinum 4 hour grace period here.

The Platinum Card also comes with full car hire insurance with no obligation to pay for the rental via American Express. You can refuse any attempts to sell you additional insurance at pick up. This benefit has substantial value if you rent on a regular basis.

You can find more details on the two Platinum cards, and apply, in our full reviews linked below. You can apply here for the personal card and here for the business card.

The article is right to question the value of these car rental statuses. In many parts of the world where there are franchisees or sub-franchisees, they don’t apply any of the benefits or discounts, having their own entirely different sites and discount codes, so it’s much more expensive trying to use some international status.

@Rob is also right re upgrades not always being of value. We ended up asking to be downgraded a couple of categories in Nice last month as the car generously offered wouldn’t have been at all practical to park in town or for driving in small old villages.

“Skip the line” can be VERY valuable in time saving. Although that’s also possible with some of the smaller more independent places. In Sardinia last summer, the local car hire company had online checkin so you could provide all details in advance, and go straight out to the car park hut to get the keys. No queuing with the masses in the car rental terminal!

5* and PC at Hertz at DFW (and some US other airports?) are even better than “Go to this bay” – it’s “Take any car from this aisle” – typically a choice of 30 cars.
I like being able to choose.
Return is equally seamless (I think for everybody)

Their computer systems however, are not so good – I have just seen that PC is $3000 – I went way past that last year but am still at 5*.

Yes, we had this in Boston and it was very convenient, especially as we had luggage and could pick the car which had the best storage option.

For the second time in a few weeks I needed a Hertz car at Glasgow airport yesterday. I book the cheapest car which currently is an electric vehicle. For the second time there was no electric vehicles and indeed apparently no vehicles. My being 40 minutes early also seemed to be an issue.

Notwithstanding for the second time I was given a simply huge Mercedes GLE with all the bells and whistles. It was a lovely car to drive despite being a gas guzzling diesel. It was driven just 70 miles but costs me £17 to top up the tank.

I use Hertz as I previously had Presidents circle from obscure deal with Lufthansa which I am certain I picked up from here. It went on for years despite never being a M&M member, never flying Lufthansa and certainly never having senator status.

Hertz are little more savvy now and I was recently down graded. They gave me 5 star till the end of June and a challenge to rent 3 times to radian Presidents status. Given the upgrades, the Amex 4 hour grace period etc I am happy to rent from Hertz for the time being.

I asked for a PC upgrade last week. Sent them a screenshot of Avis status with no bookings and they upgraded me to PC.

Amex Centurion code seems to give a decent discount – I’ll show them a Plat card if ever asked as they likely wouldn’t know the difference!

  • BRUCE says:

If you have Avis Preferred SIxt rent a car will status match it to give you gold membership, they are cheaper than any of the others, even without status.
I booked a Renault Megane and it was a lot cheaper than Avis even with the President Circle discount, and cheaper than Hertz with the Hertz Gold discount, even as they are charging me for an additional driver it works out cheaper than both of them
