EXCLUSIVE: Use Avios to book Airlink flights across Africa

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

A new airline is now bookable using Avios points – Airlink.

Based in Johannesburg, Airlink is the second largest airline in Africa in terms of annual flights.

Many readers will remember that the now bankrupt South African airline Comair operated as a British Airways franchise (the aircraft were BA branded) and was an Avios partner. The addition of Airlink as an Avios partner fills the gap left by Comair.

Use Avios to book Airlink flights across Africa

Whilst there has been no publicity, Avios flights on Airlink can now be booked via Qatar Airways Privilege Club. You cannot book via ba.com.

You will need to open a Qatar Airways Privilege Club account, if you don’t already have one, and link it to your British Airways Executive Club account. This HfP article explains how do it.

Importantly, you do NOT need to transfer Avios into your Qatar Airways account. They will be automatically withdrawn from your linked BA account when you redeem.

One downside is that you can only spend Avios in your own personal British Airways Executive Club account. Qatar Airways Privilege Club cannot withdraw Avios from members of your household account, only from your own. This means that you must, personally, have enough Avios for a redemption.

Why has Airlink become a Qatar Airways partner?

Qatar Airways acquired 25% of Airlink, the maximum allowed under local law, in August 2024.

The plan is to allow Qatar Airways to expand its reach in Africa by facilitating easy connections from its African long haul destinations.

Where does Airlink fly?

Airlink has an impressive network:

  • South Africa – Bloemfontein, Cape Town, Durban, East London, George, Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), Hoedspruit, Johannesburg, Kimberley, Mthatha, Nelspruit, Pietermaritzburg, Polokwane, Richards Bay, Sishen, Skukuza, Upington
Use Avios to book Airlink flights across Africa

plus

  • Angola – Luanda
  • Botswana – Gabarone, Kasane, Maun
  • DR Congo – Lubumbashi
  • Kenya – Nairobi
  • Lesotho – Maseru
  • Madagascar – Antananarivo, Nosy Be
  • Malawi – Blantyre, Lilongwe
  • Mozambique – Beira, Maputo, Nampula, Pemba, Tete, Vilanculos
  • Namibia – Walvis Bay, Windhoek
  • St Helena – Jamestown
  • Eswatini (Swaziland) – Manzini
  • Tanzania – Dar es Salaam
  • Zambia – Livingstone, Lusaka, Ndola
  • Zimbabwe – Bulawayo, Harare, Victoria Falls

The airline operates an all-Embraer fleet so you will be on a similar aircraft to those used by BA Cityflyer from London City Airport. I am due to fly Airlink in April between Johannesburg and Cape Town and can hopefully learn a bit more about them.

Availability looks pretty good on the Qatar Airways site at present. Here’s an example to show the seats exist:

This clearly isn’t a great value example (24,000 Avios + £38 for an economy return between Johannesburg and Cape Town). However, most Airlink routes don’t have much in the way of competition and Avios seats are likely to offer decent value.

You can find out more about Airlink and its route network on its website here.

Remember that you need to book via Qatar Airways Privilege Club and not British Airways Executive Club.

Is anyone else having difficulty seeing all the destinations. Under “book an award flight”, I can’t see some of Airlink destinations, such as Walvis Bay (WVB) or Jamestown (HLE). They are not on the list. If I then go to the “Other award flight options” tab, I can see the destinations, but tells me I don’t have enough Avios (which isn’t true).

    • S says:

You need the points in the Qatar account not BA. That gets rid of that error but I still can’t see availability online.

      • Jon says:

Ahh, thanks. Good to know. But you’re right, doesn’t explain why you can’t see availability.

I did a MAN-FRA-JNB JNB-CPT CPT-FRA-MAN on a biz trip over 10 days with mid section with Airlink on E190 for internal did all on one booking with LH so must have partnership. Biz section was 3 rows of 2-1 config, more legroom and cold food and alcohol included. Aircraft were a bit tired but served the purpose.

  • Richard says:

I’m flying Airlink from JNB to Windhoek a week on Sunday. Good to know I can use Avios on future bookings.

Does anyone have any experience on how strict they are with the 8kg hand luggage rule? I’ll be coming in to JNB in Club so not used to having a hand luggage restriction! My camera and tech will easily be a big part of the 8kg before the weight of the case and other bits n bobs! Do I need a Ryanair style jacket that I can stuff all the bits in to at check in!? 😝

    • Deek says:

Checkin is not usually a problem, it’s at the gate & aircraft stairs they often take cabin bags away due to the small size of the Embraer overhead bins. However on landing they will unload your cabin bag and leave it at the stairs of the aircraft for you to collect when you get off so it’s not as much of an issue as it sounds.

Hi our flight JNB to Windhoek we didn’t have a problem with hand baggage. Able to place in the overhead lockers and they didn’t check the weight. JNB to Kruger smaller plane which meant placing in the hold when boarding . Hope this helps.

      • Richard says:

        Thanks both,

I don’t mind the bag going in the hold as long as I get it back at the aircraft on deplaning. Good to hear weight isn’t overly policed!

  • Joe says:

Just booked a return on the JNB-HLE route. 38,000 avios + £189. I’ll be going at the end of May, and plan to use Airlink from JNB to eSwatini whilst i’m down that way.

  • Archlives says:

At the standard 1p/avios valuation, the example given for booking is a rip off, equivalent to £278! I booked a cash ticket on a competitor for JNB-CPT-JNB for £132 – literally less than half-price. Not sure about other routes but clearly one needs to check value before throwing avios overboard at <0.4p/avios.

    • HampshireHog says:

Booked JNB-WDH-CPT multi sector with cash and it was a fair bit cheaper than two bookings. Avios price would have been marginal, but this was booking 8 months out. Cash fares on non main routes can be pretty high and that’s where I think points bookings will be a good option

      • Throwawayname says:

Exactly, places like Luanda or Mozambique don’t have huge amount of airlines flying to them and prices can be high. I recently checked MPM-APL (2 hour domestic flight) and it was about £500 in Y.

  • Normksi says:

Lived in SA for 3 years. Airlink are a great, well run private airline with great customer service. Previously used to operate in cooperation with SAA. Great to see they are operating independently and successfully

  • lcsneil says:

Flying Airlink JNB to Vic Falls a week today (via an Emirates ticket). Anyone know if you get credited any points for this (or will it follow the rest of the Emirates credits – in this case to Air Canada). Would I be better trying to credit it to another FFP when I get to JNB?

    • Ang says:

This is great news! @Rob will you be doing an impromptu HFP reader meet up whilst in Cape Town by any chance? 😉
